Chapter 2

737 Words
Just then, my phone's incoming call ringtone and notification ping sounded almost at the exact same time. The investigator that I hired must have gotten something! The moment the call ended, the file was sent over immediately. Inside, it clearly detailed the entire history between Olivia and Nathan. It turned out that Nathan had cheated on me long before, even back when we were still engaged, and the person he cheated with was none other than Olivia! They met at my engagement banquet, and from that day on, their affair spun out of control. On that day eight years ago, Olivia intended to come clean to me about everything. She threatened Nathan that if he doesn't break up with me, she'll tell me the truth herself. The two of them got into a heated argument over the phone. Olivia, driven mad by rage, caused that devastating fire, and Nathan only ended up paralyzed because he went in to save Olivia! He could magnanimously forgive the arsonist, but he left me in the dark for a full eight years? That damned fire took my parents from me, and I never could have guessed this whole thing was nothing but a farce! Right now, I'm itching to take Olivia's pathetic life! But I know that would be letting her off too easily. Instead, I'm going to make her wish she were dead. The next morning, a call from the Linwood family came just as expected. "Agnes, Nathan is back. Why didn't you come pick him up at the airport?" I wasn't there? I was, but he left with his mistress instead! I chuckled lightly and said, "Aren't you the one who never wants to see me? I was being thoughtful, trying not to upset you!" "You... What kind of attitude is this? If it weren't for you..." I cut her off. "Enough. If you think that Nathan shouldn't have saved me, then go yell at your own son. I didn't tell him to save me. Besides, who can even say for sure what the real truth was back then?" Now that I know the truth, I'm not going to keep wronging myself anymore. Eight whole years... Just thinking about it makes me sick to my stomach. "Agnes, you don't actually think that just because my son likes you, I'll back down, do you?" "Madam Linwood, you don't have to. After all, I was never the person you really wanted anyway. She's been here this whole time, so just let her marry your son." After saying that, I hung up immediately and blocked her number. I'm never going to put up with this unfair treatment any longer. I don't know what she said to Nathan after that, but very quickly, his call came through. I didn't want to answer, but after thinking it over, I might as well hear what kind of excuses he has to give. "What, Nathan?" "Agnes, did my mother get at you again? Don't be upset. She's just worried about me — I've been paralyzed for eight years, you should try to understand where she's coming from..." He went on and on, but not once in all his words did he outright say he saved me, yet every word implied that he ended up like this for my sake. "Nathan, do you love me?" "Of course I do. If I didn't love you, why would I have rushed into the raging fire to save you?" He really is something, isn't he? For something he never actually did, he could say it so brazenly and self-righteously. Actually, before he called me, I had already found the person who saved me, and that person had long since perished in the fire! I didn't call him out on his lie. I wanted to see just how long he could keep up this act! "Then why couldn't I find you at the airport? Nathan, do you really still want to marry me?" "Of course I do, Agnes. I've already talked my parents around. Let's meet tomorrow." He never explained what happened at the airport. I don't know if he felt guilty, or if he truly thought I was a fool. "Okay." Right after I agreed to Nathan's request, another provocative text from Olivia popped up. It was a video of her and Nathan in bed together, and she wrote: We're already like this, and you still want to marry him?
