Chapter 3

I sent a cheeky gloating emoji: If you two are already like this, and he still won't marry you, then you're the loser here. I was trying to rile Olivia up. After I sent that message, I put her out of my mind. I found the family of the person who saved me all those years ago, and told them why I had come. When she saw me, she smiled gently and said, "If my daughter knew that the person she saved is alive and well now, she would be so happy..." She was such a kind mother. Even though her daughter died saving me, and this was the first time I had come to see them in eight years, she never once blamed me. Yet I was drowning in guilt. I knelt before her, and poured out all the grievances I had carried these eight years. "Are you saying that someone pretended to be my daughter to claim credit as your savior?" I nodded. She immediately clenched her hand into a fist and said, "Why? What gives them the right?" "I'm sorry for this, madam. I only just found out the truth myself." She was so kind, and she said to me, "This isn't your fault." When I left, she gave me a comforting hug and said, "My child, keep going and be well." I nodded hard. When I got home, after sorting through all the evidence, I dialed an overseas phone number. The line rang and rang for a long time with no answer. Just when I thought no one was going to pick up, the call connected. "Have you made up your mind?" "Yeah, auntie. Help me sort out my emigration paperwork. I've found the people who killed my parents. Once I settle this matter, I'll leave." "Okay. What do you need me to do? Can you handle this on your own?" My aunt was as aloof as ever, but I knew she was the kindest person to me in the whole world. "Nothing." After I hung up, I received flight information for a flight departing one week later. My aunt followed up with another message: One week. Can you finish everything in time? I sent back an "OK" hand gesture emoji. The next day, I arrived at the place I had agreed to meet Nathan. I didn't see him there—instead, I saw only Olivia. She sat arrogantly in our reserved table and said, "You're here? It's been eight years, and you're just as annoying as ever." Olivia smugly gave me a side-eye, raised her eyebrow slightly, and said, "Nathan married you only for me, you know that, right?" It was as if she was worried I hadn't seen the text she sent me, so she repeated those words. When she saw I remained completely unfazed, Olivia got riled up. "Do you think you can keep staying by Nathan's side just by keeping quiet? Let me tell you this: even if the two of you are married, his heart will always belong to me." Seeing her like this made me laugh. "So, you were the real culprit behind that fire eight years ago, weren't you?" "You know already?" Olivia made no attempt to deny it; she only grew even more smug. She stared at me intently and laughed for a long time before saying, "You know the truth, and so what? For my sake, Nathan already made the restaurant owner take the blame for that fire. Of course he'll get me out of this too." At this point, Olivia paused as if something had just occurred to her. Then, she sneered smugly, "Even though your parents died because of me, Nathan only chewed me out for a couple of minutes. By now, you should finally know which of us matters more, shouldn't you?" Olivia had the audacity to bring my parents into this. If I didn't slap her right across the face, I'd be letting her off too easily. I pulled back all my strength and slapped her as hard as I could. The blow sent Olivia stumbling backward, and she fell into a seated position on the floor. "What do you think you're doing?" Of all times, Nathan chose this exact moment to show up.
