Chapter Four

1145 Words
Vibing to your favorite music while opening boxes is a different type of good morning. Had I eaten, no? Was I starving, hell yeah? But, I wasn't about to let something so minor stop me from enjoying my day. After that weird dream, I woke up at 2 am something and couldn't go back to sleep, so like any normal person I picked up my phone and texted my best friend, who wasn't awake at the time, but oh well. I think I spent like 2 more hours or something on my phone and then got up to start working with the boxes. And until now, so far, so good. Surprising, right? I was almost done with my clothes when I got a notification form my phone. Cam was free today so she wanted to stop by. After sending her the new address, I kept folding my clothes inside my new closet. After that, I moved on to the bathroom and put everything in place. It took longer than I had imagined, but I was kinda proud with the way it turned out. Another notification from Cam, let me know that she was half an hour away. I went down to the kitchen and started making breakfast. Waffles were my favorite, but Cam preferred pancakes so I made them both using already prepared mix. I hadn't turned off the music and because I was too lazy to keep changing it I always put my music list on auto play, so imagine my surprise when the music stops. It just stops. Like hoe, we don't do that here. Checking that the food needed a few more minutes to get ready I went upstairs, blaming myself for forgetting to charge my phone. I got in front of my door and pushed it open... Wait... Wait a damn minute... I pushed it open? When I never freaking closed it? I was stuck in place, trying to recall whether I did indeed close the door, or not. A beeping sound made my heart jump out of my chest and I think something weird happened to my hearing. The screen of my phone flashed with a text and Cam's name appeared. I took deep breaths and shook my head, while bending down to take my phone that had apparently fallen from the bed. "Jesus" I whispered. The fear would have swallowed me whole hadn't it been for Cam. 'I'm outside' read the text. 'Come in, I left the gate open' I texted back and put the phone on my hoodie's pocket. I remembered the food on the kitchen and almost broke my damn neck while rushing down the stairs. Thankfully, everything was still edible. Just as I was flipping the last pancake I heard Cam's whistle. "In the kitchen" I shouted. "Don't be offended, but how the f**k could you afford all this" were Cam's first words as she stepped inside the kitchen. "I'm the seller and the buyer, and although it was a heated discussion for the price, in the end, the deal was affordable for both those parts of me." I answered in a sassy tone. Cam simply rolled her eyes and laid her purse on the kitchen isle. I put the food on separate plates and handed them to her. "I wanna check the backyard" Cam said as she grabbed the plates and waited for me to do the same. "I haven't laid down the table there thou" I said, but leaded the way to the back door anyway. "We can just sit on the porch and hold the plates on our laps." Cam nodded and followed me. Once outside we sat down and started to eat with our bare hands, because my dumbass self had forgotten in which box I had packed the kitchen utensils. Oh, well. After a couple of mouthfuls in silence because we were both starving, Cam starts talking. "So how's everything?" I swallowed harshly and tried to answer back immediately which almost got me chocked to death. But after my breathing returned to normal I started telling her about the dream. When I was done, Cam looked like she couldn't hold her laughter. "Elora, dreams are supposed to be fun, you i***t! How do you manage to f**k up something so simple?" she sounded genially confused. "You know I don't dream" I tried to defend myself, but she wasn't having that crap. "That's no excuse" she almost screamed at me but then calmed down almost instantly and asked anew "What's with the necklace thou?" I swallowed my last bite first and then took my time before speaking again. "I really, really liked it. Like, it reminded me of something, but now I don't even recall the shape of the jewel" I sighted. "Anyway, what's up with you and Trey?" Cam looked down at the ground for a good minute before looking at me with moist eyes. I pushed my plate away and hugged her while she sobbed softly. It went like that for minutes. "I thought you guys made up" I whispered. A part of me wished she hadn't heard it, but then again not much escaped Cam. "We did. When we last talked together on the phone he had apologized and we made up. But, last night, he... he said... he said that we weren't endgame. That this, whatever this was...wasn't it. For him. So we broke up." She paused to hiccup and kept going "Before texting you today I tried texting him but he had blocked me. So I... So I went to his house, and... and he had a girl over." With that she shattered. I could feel her falling apart. All I could do was hug her tighter and stroke her hair lovingly. Cam was... Different. Ever since we were young, she always found it more difficult to adapt or sometimes she couldn't even complete simple tasks, like writing in a straight line. I felt sorry for her, but yet I didn't want to pity her. God knows she had had enough of that in her life. After what seemed like hours, Cam had to leave because her cousin was in town. After helping me with the plates I walked her out to the door. We passed the trash bin and went straight to her car. After one last hug she moved to open her door, but then suddenly turned to face me. "Before I forget" she started to say as she pulled something out of her pocket and handing it to me "this was too pretty to be left by the trash." She got in her car and drove away. I was frozen in place. My blood felt cold and all I could hear was a beep noise, like the sound the medical machines do when someone's heart stops. The pretty necklace of my dream, that had me captivated not so long ago, was suddenly hunting me in a completely different manner. The golden chain of the necklace that had felt just right on my neck and shoulders during my dream, was the same golden chain that had been hanging from the chandelier yesterday.
