Chapter 5

"Wh-what is going on here?" Lucid whispered, obviously the most confused person. How did the Almighty Jason Dafferson know the low-life whose life was just about to be changed. Emily let out an exasperated sigh, running her hands in her hair in frustration. She hated doing this but she had to. She turned to Lucid and broke the news; "I'm sorry sir, but I can't take this job" Jason scoffed. "Who do you think you are to reject me? Hey!" He shouted, turning his gaze to Lucid. "The last person I will want to treat me is that thing standing before me" "You don't dare call me a thing!" "Hey, hey, hey, no talks back at Mr Jason. I understand you're upset but you can take a minute outside to get yourself together. I don't know about your differences or....." Emily gave a soft chuckle that interrupted Lucid. She was finally connecting the dots. No wonder he was so arrogant, he was worshiped everywhere he went. "You know what, sir? To hell with your boss!" She spat and walked away. "Think about it, this is a mouth watering offer and only a few people receive this opportunity in their lifetime!" Lucid shouted as she walked away. "Get over it, I'm not receiving treatment from her" Lucid could only sigh. "You know you're not helping the situation right now, yeah?" "Are you not even curious about how we met? I've never seen a lowlife so audacious. I can't stand her" ******* "Argh! How did I end up meeting him again?" Emily quarreled forcefully unbuttoning the first three buttons of her shirt. She paused and turned to the entrance of the coffee's shop, lost in thoughts. "Could my ill luck be gotten from the fact that I didn't feed the pigeons? But I was going to get some grains later today!" She cried out, throwing a tantrum like a 5 year old child. "Emily" a soft female voice called out. "Kristine!" Emily screamed, throwing her arms around her. "I think I was punished.... I was being punished Kristine for not feeding the pigeons" The first time the pigeons appeared on Emily's window was a year ago. They were not regular visitors but each time they arrived, Emily always made it a point of duty to feed them. The first time she fed them, her grocery bills got cleared by a total stranger and another time she found some dollar notes in her pants, it was that moment she realized the pigeons might just be her lucky charm. Fortunately for Emily, the pigeons appeared that morning while she was preparing for her interview but she was too overwhelmed to pay attention to them and now she believed her nonchalant attitude was rewarded awfully. "Hey, hey, I need you to calm down. Take a deep breath and explain everything to me, in details" Kristine encouraged, holding her shoulders and looking deep into her eyes. "You would never have believed who my supposed client is...." "Who?" "The same motherfucker who r***d me!" Kristine's brows crinkled in confusion. "Wait a minute.... Does The Almighty Jason Dafferson happen to be your patient?" Emily nodded naively. "I guess with all his arrogance he still happens to be dealt with. I mean, why else will 'the almighty Jason' be....." Kristine immediately cut her short by covering her mouth fearfully. She first struggled to fight against Kristine before she was released. "What do you think you're doing, Kristine" "Do you even know who Mr Jason is? Do you not listen to the news? This deal must be private and huge!" "And what business do I have to do with that? What makes him believe amongst everyone who bows at his presence I'll be willing to help him" "What's his deal?" "He wants an in-house Psychologist that will pretend to be his girlfriend before the media. A three months contract worth 20 million dollars" Kristine gasped in shock. How did Emily explain this so casually? "I was right, it's a huge and private deal, Emily! You're so lucky to be considered by Mr. Jason Dafferson!" Emily felt disgusted by her best friend's reactions and she didn't lie with her expression. "No Kris. I'm not sure if I will take this offer but we must be clear on something, I earned it. I was sought after and not the other way round" "You can't be silly. How dare you think of reconsidering this offer? We are talking about a fuckin 20 million dollars here! Are you thinking of the connections? Do you know what it means being addressed as his girlfriend? He has never been in a relationship! Have you thought about how the world will bow....." "Kristine, enough! Why are you obsessing over what's a lie?" Emily was right although there were elements of truth in her words but Kristine felt the need to be calm, it was early to think that far. She took in a deep breath and approached Emily in a much calmer and sensible manner. "Emily...." She began, changing her facial expression into a pathetic one, the kind of expression that always made Emily's heart melt. "I understand how tough this sounds. Being abused, humiliated and even lost your job but later offered a mouth watering role by the abuser, anyone in your shoes will not stand it but you must think deeply. We are powerless, Emily, what can you possibly do to the most influential person in the country? Think about your mother who is still laying helplessly in the hospital with piled up bills. Wouldn't the Doctors call you by the weekend to remind you of your bills? For a moment, think about how your life will take a different turn once you accept this deal, I don't mean to sound....." "Enough Kristine!" She commanded. "I thought you'll be more considerate to think about how I'm feeling about all of these but I guess I was wrong and look, I'm not powerless. Lastly, I'm not taking this job!" ******** "I see, she's quite the audacious type" Lucid added after listening to Jason's encounter with Emily. "Thank you for your understanding" "But then, you must consider how important this is to us, the company and everyone else. You can't afford it ....." "Enough, Lucid. I'm not gonna hire her and that's final”
