Sold To Him

Susan's pov I was scrubbing the ground and counting the seconds. Finally, I thought he was gone, but I heard it again and my heart skipped. The knock was sharp, decisive and like a thunderclap. It was not meant for me to feel scared. It was just a knock and the man was gone, i said to myself. However, the glimmer of anxiety in my stepmother's eyes as she looked at the door told me everything. The person outside wasn't just another guest. Smoothing the front of her dress, she gathered herself and smiled widely as she opened the door. “You're early.” She said to someone at the door. There was no arguing the fact that the man at the doorstep was no other person but that same man. I thought he had left already. Why was he here again? I peered through the railings as Sherry beamed at him and rushed him in. “You have the payment?” he asked in a deep, emotionless voice. My brow went down. Payment? With an unblinking smile, my stepmother turned to face me. Her eyes met mine before I could pretend to scrub the floor. “Come down here, twerp.” She said, her voice dripping with disgust. “And be fast about it.” I forced my tiny legs down the stairs as I felt a wave of cold unease sweep over me. She gave me one last look before she turned to the guards the man had come with. “Take her away.” The room swung. In my ears, my pulse thumped. My voice hardly left my lips as I said. “W-What?” The man looked at me with a cool evaluating flick of his eyes. I felt like I was being hunted down by the weight of his stare. “You can’t—this is a mistake!” I stepped back, my heart hammering against my sides. With a vice-like grip, my stepmother—not the woman who had wedded my father—reached for me. “Remember I have paid my debt,” she said. “No!” I yanked my arm, but she pressed her fingernails into my flesh. “Please don’t do this!” As if I were a bother she let out a sigh. “Stupid girl.” She then turned to the man. “She might be wolf less, but she will breed well. You will never find a better bargain than this one.” “Being sold is a deal?” I said in a broken voice. My stepsister hardly gave me a look while scrolling through her phone while relaxing on the couch. “Stop creating noise.” She yelled. Desperate, I turned to her. “Help me please! You're my sister.” At last, she raised her head and looked at me with a look that was almost amused. “Sister?” she shook her head and snorted. “I don't need one.” I was surprised by how deeply the words cut. With effortless strength, the man in black grabbed my arm and dragged me forward. I struggled but to no avail. “ Wait!” My throat ached. “Please don't— I'll work and pay her whatever she owes.” My stepmother's eyes became icy. “You? Pay? Without my kindness you couldn't even buy food for yourself.” She dismissively waved her hand.” Enough of the bullshit. Take her.” I was pulled toward the door, choking in terror. My stepmother shutting the door behind me, ensuring my fate without hesitation was the last thing I saw before leaving for the night. ______ The only sound during the carriage ride was my heart thumping. I was confined to the dim glow of the lantern swaying overhead with thick wood blocking every kind of hope. We were supposed to go along the normal route. Why was this dark forest like I was born in the sixteenth century, and I was nothing but a war captive? With unreadable expressions, the two guards seated across from me remained silent. I moved my wrists, hurting from their tight hold on me. “ Where are you taking me to?” I said in a raspy voice. There was no answer. “Who sent you?” Still nothing. A knot grew in my throat. I tried to stop my hands from shaking by pressing myself against the seat. This isn't possible. A mistake might have been made. Maybe—. I didn't know that we had even gotten to our destination until the horseman dragged me out, and I gasped at the palace. It was completely strange, menacing and breathtaking. I was pushed forward before I had a chance to process it all. As soon as we entered, the front doors which opened engulfed me. The marble floors in the grand hallways were illuminated by yellow light from chandeliers. Rich scents of burning embers, polished wood and things else filled the air. Something. . . Crazy. My stomach twisted with fear as we strolled. I tried again with a broken voice. “Please, I'll find a way to pay her whatever she owes. Let me go please.” One of the guards, who was taller than the others, muttered something under his breath. “The debt is already paid off.” I took a large swallow. “So what am I here to do?” He didn't respond. We paused before a huge door after what seemed like an eternity. When one of the guards forced it open, and I saw a large room filled with candlelight, my heart raced. In the middle was a large bed covered in black silk sheets. A large window, an elaborate fireplace and plush chairs all shouted luxury. But I felt more like a prisoner. “Stay here,” the guard said. . . I turned abruptly to him and asked. “And if I don’t?” Smiling and showing dirt and kidding teeth, he took a step forward. His voice sank to a dangerously low pitch. “Don't be stubborn.” With a loud thud, the door closed behind them. I sprinted over to it right away and grabbed the handle. It didn't move. Locked. My breath was shallow. I whirled looking around the room for an escape route, but the only window was too high. As I tried to steady myself, my fingernails dug into my palms. I thought this was a dream and I would wake up on the kitchen floor. But the weight of the lock, the room's silence and the lack of an escape all said the truth. I couldn't get out. I was here for the lycan king as his breeder.
