“What did you say, scum?” My eyes flashed as my wolf surged forward to the front, my protective nature overruling my dignity.
“Ease up, mutt.” He hissed back, his two fangs poking out at the hostility. “She’s mine. I found her first.” As soon as he said it, I darted forward and slammed him against the wall of the hallway, pining his neck to it and letting my claws dig into the plaster on either side of his neck.
“Let’s have one thing clear, leach.” I snarled at him. “She’s mine now and under my protection. If even one hair on her head is even so much as touched by you, I’ll tear off your head and burn your body. I’ll pluck out your fangs and tear out your tongue and leave your sorry excuse of a face on the highest pull I can find and watch as your skin touches the first light of day on top of it.”
I could feel this ‘Chad’ gulp under the palm of my hand as I threatened him, his already pale skin going more so than previous. “Are we clear on this?” He nodded as I released my hold on him and turned to head down the hallway back to the steps.
“My nest will not take kindly to the threat or the claim on something that isn’t yours!” He barked out, his pride making him forget about his moment of fear.
“Sure it will. And if it does, it’ll have the Ghost Pack to deal with.” I saw his face go into a flash of fear just as I turned to the stares, the name holding more weight than anything else in the underworld community.
When I got to my vehicle, my driver was holding open the door for me and closing it as I got it. He immediately began driving to my offices, his face grim. I picked up my phone that I had left on the seat, seeing that Hal had tried to contact me. “This better be good.” I called him back and he picked up on the first ring, his breathing labored.
“Wolf Enterprises scooped up the property. They swooped in at the last minute and offered them ten thousand more sometime this morning.” His voice was tense and labored, the phone sounding like he was jogging hard.
“What?!” I growled low in my throat, all the effort into buying up that land might as well have been for nothing. “What is Adam Growler thinking?” I fumed. “And why the hell are you jogging?!”
“Running! I may have gone to Wolf Enterprises to try and spy on them to see what’s up, but they found me rather quickly.” Hal huffed.
“What street are you on? I’ll send backup to you.”
“No…need… I’ve about lost them now and our territory is straight ahead.”
I rested my head on my hand, grabbing my temple and rubbing the area as I felt a migraine coming on. “Don’t tell me I’m going go and have to deal with that old man, am I?” I sighed.
“I… think… so.” He huffed, his labored pants slowing down as I could hear him go from running into a brisk walk. “It’s been a hot minute since he’s stirred up this kind of trouble for us.”
“Damnit..” I growled, not liking this one bit. For some unknown reason, my mind flashed to the letterhead I had seen at Dorothy’s. It was the same that Adam Growler used for his personal stationary, making me not like the implications I was putting together. If Dorothy’s background check cleared, I’d have to keep a close eye on her; especially if she was a spy from the old bastard.
“Have Daffodil set up an appointment with him for as soon as possible. We cannot lose all that work for nothing. There’s a reason he’s stirring the pot now, so find it out.”
“Understood.” Hal ended the call then, scurrying to do my bidding.
“Go back to the club for now, Parker; I think I need to review some things first.” I told my driver.
“Yes sir.”
I was going to go over every bit of information we got from this Dorothy; the timing of her appearance having to be more than just a coincidence. I was slightly kidding myself too, to be honest. I wanted to see her again on the screens of the camera’s there for myself, watch her move about my club, and see exactly what she had put in that salad; the taste of it still lingering on my tongue and making me want more.
