King Alexander’s POV
As I moved closer to the young woman who had rushed out of the hall, I couldn’t help but notice her beauty. Her features were delicate, with high check bones and full pink lips. Her eyes, though wide with fear, sparkled like gemstones in the dim light of the corridor. Her dark hair falls graciously in loose waves, framing her pretty face.
“Are you alright?” I asked her. “Please, Your Majesty," she stammered. “I’m just… I need some air.”
I nodded, understanding. “Let me escort you back to the hall,” I offered, extending my arm.
But she shook her head, her eyes darting around the corridor as if she feared being seen by me. “No, thank you, Your Majesty." I’ll be fine.”
I raised an eyebrow, intrigued by her response. Who was this young woman, and why did she seem so skittish around me? I decided to probe further, my curiosity piqued. “Very well,” I said, “but tell me, what’s your name?” “I’m Elara,” she responded quickly, facing downwards.
I took a step closer to hers and with my fingers, I gently reached for her jaw, tilting her face upwards. My emotions ran out of control and my fingers moved to her cheek as my head moved closer. My heart was racing and I couldn’t control myself. Suddenly she pushed me away and made my way to leave. I grabbed her arm and held her hands gently.
“I’m sorry,” I said softly. “That was inappropriate." She was silent. “Your hands are shaking,” I said.
Her eyes met mine, and for a moment, I saw a flash of surprise. Then, she looked down at her hands, still shaking in mine. "I'm just a bit...overwhelmed," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
"It's understandable," I said. "The palace can be overwhelming, especially for those who aren't used to it."
She looked up at me, her eyes searching mine. I could see the fear and uncertainty there, but also a spark of determination. "Thank you, Your Majesty," she said, her voice a little stronger now.
I smiled, trying to put her at ease. "Please, call me Alexander," I said. "We're not in the throne room, after all."
She smiled slightly, and I felt a warmth spread through my chest. I realized that I didn't want to let her go, not yet. "Would you like to walk with me?" I asked, releasing her hands. "The gardens are lovely this time of night."
Elara nodded in agreement, and we strolled through the gardens. Everything felt so different. It was as if being in the garden was my first time. Fire flies glowed in the dark, revealing flashes of the colorful flowers. The air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming roses. The sound of music drifted from the ground floor.
“Tell me, Elara,” I said, breaking the silence. What do you think of the palace? Is it everything you expected?” She hesitated for a moment, looking around as if expecting someone. “It’s…different,” she said finally. “I’ve never seen anything like it."
I chuckled. “I’ll take that as a compliment," I said. “The palace has a lot of history and character."
“Would you like to dance?” I asked, reaching for her hand. “I don’t know if I should," she replied shyly, her face blushing.
As Elara and I were about to dance, she suddenly tensed up, her eyes wide with a mix of fear and anxiety. "I should get back to the hall," she said quickly, her voice barely above a whisper.
I was taken aback by her sudden change in demeanor. "Do you need me to escort you back?" I asked, reaching out to her.
But she shook her head and hastily excused herself, disappearing into the darkness before I could say another word. I watched her go, feeling a sense of confusion and curiosity. What had just happened? Did I do something wrong?
Shrugging, I decided to call it a night. I made my way to my chambers, lost in thought as I replayed the events of the evening in my mind. The feeling of connection I had with Elara, the spark of attraction I felt, it all seemed to vanish as I stepped into my chambers and saw the queen seated in my chair.
The queen's eyes met mine as I entered the chamber, her expression unreadable. "You left the party early," she said, her voice neutral.
"Are you asking me or telling me?" I replied, my tone dry.
The queen's gaze narrowed. "I was discussing with a servant, and before I could turn to you, you were nowhere to be found," she said, her voice tinged with accusation.
I sighed, feeling a familiar frustration rising up. "Oh, if you were not so carried away with your event, I wouldn't have left in the first place," I said, my voice rising.
The queen's face darkened. “So you left our party early, and then it’s my fault, you're trying to pin this on me?" she asked, her voice escalating.
I shook my head, feeling exhausted. " I don't have energy for this tonight," I said firmly. "I went out for some air, and now I'm back, I want to rest."
The tension between us was palpable, but I didn't have the strength to engage in another argument. I just wanted to be left alone.
"How do you expect us to rule this kingdom if we can't see eye to eye?" she asked, her frustration boiling over. "It's as if I'm forcing this marriage on you." I remained silent with no response and her words hung in the air. Without a word, I turned and walked away, leaving her standing alone in the room. "Where are you going?" she called after me, but i didn't look back. I slammed the door shut behind me and let out a heap of sigh.
