“Hello girlfriend.”
“Hi handsome.”
“So today we’re going on a date. I’ve taken permission from the hospital. I’ll be taking you somewhere special. And then you’ll choose somewhere you’ll like to visit too. What do you say about that?” Today is Saturday and Adam had no work. We came to see Grandma Blue and found the drugs taking its side effect. Moodiness. So Adam decided to take permission to take her out of the hospital. She instantly became happy.
“Oh God! I was starting to go crazy. I’m glad I could finally go out.”
“I’m hurt Grandma Blue. You mean you don’t like my company. She laughed and then replied
“So Adam has started rubbing off on you? Twisting something as straight as this.”
“Which Adam? Definitely not me.” I loved their banters. It always made my stomach hurt. While we were still preparing for our outing, someone knocked on the door.
“Come in.” I answered.
“Good morning Miss Catherine.” It was Omar. Her doctor. A young man in his early thirties with a diamond shaped face and dazzling blue eyes. He looked somewhat Arab. He had beautiful features. Why was Omar here at this time? Check ups were mostly done before visiting times. Is anything wrong? Grandma Blue always told me how handsome he is but I didn’t know it was this type of handsome. Everyone swooned, including me. And then he was standing here. In front of me! I had to turn my head to the other side not to make it too obvious I was staring at him so I looked at intervals.
“Good morning Omar. How are you again?” She replied. He shook hands with Adam and did a head gesture with me.
“I’m fine. I can see your happy.”
“Yes. Very much. Uhmm I hope there isn’t any problem. Visiting me at this time.”
“No. There isn’t any. It’s just that i was told about your absence from the hospital today. Is that so?”
“Is it is. I’ll be taking a break from you guys.” She said with a ting of humor.
“Do we bore you that much?”
“Yes, you do.” That was her effect. She played and laughed with everyone she comes by. Everyone’s favorite person.
“Okay then I’ll give the person who stays with you my number. For emergencies sakes. Is that you Layla?”
“Uh Uhm Yes. I guess so.”
“You’re okay with that.”
“No she’s not. Thank you. We have the hospital’s number.” Adam chipped in stating it as a matter of fact. I tilted mg head to his side but he didn’t spare me a glance.
“Adam, Right? I know you have the hospital’s number but I’m her personal doctor. I just felt it’s more appropriate to have mine too.”
“Okay. Then give it to me.”
“Well Layla is here always and knows more about it than you do, I’ll give it to you.” She said looking back at me.
“Then we don’t need it.”
“Adam why are you making a fuss out of this. It’s not a big deal. Just allow her to give him the number.” Adam and Omar were in a staring contest. Both their gaze unwavering.
“Okay. You can do as you wish.”
“Layla. It’s okay. You can give to him.” I nodded and stated our the numbers while he typed it into his phone. Just then he called me and I saved his too. Dr Omar. Adam was sulking by the side about something that’s suddenly bothering. But honestly, I see no problem in communicating about Grandma Blues progress with Dr. Omar.
“I’ll see you around Mr. Adam.” He said and left the room.
“I hope I don’t see you again Dr. Omar.” He said after he was long gone down the the corridor.
“What’s wrong with you today? This is the first time I’m seeing you behave like this. He was just looking out for me.” Grandma Blue was baffled at the way he treated the poor doctor. I had to say I was surprised too. I didn’t say anything, just looked out of the window. Lines marred his forehead and his eyes where winced. He was thinking about something. She was also looking at him. Waiting for the perfect explanation of why he acted the way he did.
“Can we leave now?”
“Where exactly are you talking about? I said we were going on a date. We don’t need a third wheel. I never invited you. I can take care of her without you or the doctor.”
“Enough! That’s enough Adam. What’s wrong with you today? Why are you behaving so unlike you? Why are you hurting the girl? As far as I’m concerned she didn’t do anything and I don’t encourage transfer of aggression.” I couldn’t I didn’t feel hurt but I knew better what lies behind the facade. The question is who ignited the fire?
“Okay. Both of you can go. I’ll just stay here and start reading my book.” I tried to stay calm before the waterworks begin.
“No layla. Don’t say that. I’m going no where without you.”
“It’s okay. I don’t feel hurt. It’s your time now. You should have some quality time together .” I said trying to muster up a smile.
“You see. She’s not interested. It might have been a slip of words the first time she said it.” Adam was unbelievable. I knew it. He wouldn’t dare look my way.
“I’m sorry Layla. I’ll be back soon. And for you Mister! We are going to have a long conversation. They packed a few things they needed and bade me goodbye. The door was slammed shut in front of me. Honestly, I looked forward to the whole “date” thing. I kept on thinking and trying to get a reasonable reason for him to treat me this way. I stated back for a while before getting my things and heading out to the bus station. I decided to branch to the OB-GYN and see Doctor Elizabeth. I went and knocked a few times before she answered the door.
“Come in.”
“Look who’s here to see me. How are you?” She stood up and hugged me. I sat on the chair opposite to hers while she was behind the desk.
“I’m good. You?”
“I’m fine. Is everything okay?”
“Yes! I was just passing by and I decided to see my all time favorite doctor.”
“Well I’m honored. How’s the progress with the baby?” I subconsciously placed my hand on my swollen belly.
“The baby is fine Alhamdullilah.” I smiled
“I’m glad. What would you like to have?” I have a fruits and snacks.” She offered
“I’ll take a banana please?” She got up and passed me a banana and an apple.
“You look pale. Everything alright?”
“Yes! Nothing to worry About.” I said while taking a bite of the banana.
“You know I never press you to tell me anything. You just come around.”
“I promise you. It’s nothing to worry about.” We chatted for a while before she got her next patient. I promised to come visit again apart from my antenatals.
I got on the bus and my mind wandered off the Adnan and Lisa’s problem. How were they coping? I’ll call Lisa when I get home. I pulled out my phone and called Adam to ask if they were alright. And his reply was “we can survive without you.” I pushed Adam and all his negativeness to the back of my mind. I’ve had a enough for a lifetime. So I just relaxed and played Candy crush.
