Episode 23 The File That Should Not Exist The walk home from the hospital felt longer than usual. Didi barely noticed the vehicles passing by or the people moving through the crowded streets. Her mind remained trapped in the words Vanessa had spoken. "You should ask your father what really happened." "Neither is your father innocent." Those words refused to leave her head. By the time she reached the apartment, she was mentally exhausted. Her mother immediately noticed. "Didi?" "Hmm?" "What happened?" Didi dropped her bag on the small wooden table. "Vanessa again." The smile on Mama's face disappeared. "What did she do this time?" Didi sat down heavily. Then she explained everything. The meeting. The confrontation. The accusation. The mention of Adrian's father. Everything. When she finished, the room fell silent. Mama looked worried. Very worried. "This is getting dangerous." Didi sighed. "I know." For several moments neither spoke. Then Mama stood and slowly walked toward the old metal box beneath the bed. Didi watched curiously. The box had been there for years. Yet her mother rarely opened it. The older woman unlocked it carefully. Inside were old photographs, documents, certificates, and letters. Memories from another life. A better life. A life before everything collapsed. "What are you looking for?" Mama didn't answer immediately. Finally she found what she wanted. A yellow envelope. Her hands trembled slightly as she opened it. "Didi." "Yes?" "There are things I never told you." Didi immediately became alert. "What things?" Her mother removed an old photograph. The edges had faded with time. Slowly she handed it over. The moment Didi looked at it, confusion appeared on her face. Several men stood together in front of a building. All of them smiling. All of them younger. Then her eyes widened. She recognized two faces. Her father. And beside him... Adrian's father. "What?" Mama nodded slowly. "Your father and Adrian's father used to work together." Didi stared at the picture. Unable to process it. "They knew each other?" "Very well." The room suddenly felt smaller. More complicated. Everything she thought she knew seemed to be changing. "Why didn't you tell me?" Mama looked down. "Because I wanted to leave the past behind." Didi looked at the photograph again. The image raised more questions than answers. If the two families knew each other before... Then Vanessa's accusations suddenly seemed much more important. And much more dangerous. --- That same evening, Adrian sat in his office staring at the investigation file Vanessa had given him. The hospital had become quiet. Most staff had gone home. Yet he remained seated behind his desk. Thinking. The more he thought about it, the less sense everything made. Finally he stood. There was only one person who could answer his questions. His father. Twenty minutes later, he entered the executive office. The older man was reviewing paperwork when Adrian arrived. "You look serious." "I am." His father immediately put the documents aside. "What happened?" Without a word, Adrian placed Vanessa's file on the desk. The older man's expression changed instantly. A brief flicker of recognition crossed his face. Then concern. "Where did you get this?" "Vanessa." Silence. "What exactly is going on?" His father sighed heavily. For several moments he simply stared at the file. As if remembering something painful. Something he would rather forget. Finally he stood and walked toward the window. "The past should remain buried." Adrian crossed his arms. "I'm not leaving until I get answers." The older man smiled faintly. "You've always been stubborn." "I learned from you." For the first time that evening, his father laughed. But it didn't last. Soon his expression became serious again. "Years ago, before this hospital became successful, several of us worked together." Adrian listened carefully. "One of those people was Didi's father." The room fell silent. "What happened?" His father took a deep breath. "There were accusations." "What kind?" "Financial fraud." Adrian frowned. "Did he do it?" The older man didn't answer. Not immediately. And that hesitation told Adrian everything. "You don't know." "No." His father's voice sounded tired. "There was never enough proof." "Then why did everyone believe it?" A painful smile appeared. "Because powerful people wanted someone to blame." Adrian's heartbeat quickened. "Vanessa's family?" The older man looked away. And that was answer enough. --- The following morning, Didi woke up thinking about the photograph. The image refused to leave her mind. Finally she made a decision. She needed to speak with her father again. No matter how uncomfortable it felt. An hour later, she arrived at the guest house. Room 12. The same room. The same door. This time she knocked with more confidence. Her father opened it almost immediately. The surprise on his face was obvious. "Didi." "I have questions." He stepped aside. "Come in." The room felt small. Cramped. Nothing like the home he once dreamed of providing for his family. Didi remained standing. She removed the photograph from her bag. Immediately his expression changed. "Where did you get that?" "Mama." He stared at the picture. For a brief moment, genuine sadness appeared in his eyes. "We were happy then." Didi ignored the comment. "Tell me the truth." Silence. "Did you know Adrian's father?" "Yes." "How well?" "We were friends." The answer shocked her. Friends. Not colleagues. Friends. "What happened?" Her father sat down slowly. Then he began talking. For the next hour, Didi listened. Listened to stories she had never heard before. Stories about ambition. Success. Business. Friendship. Betrayal. According to him, everything changed when money became involved. Certain powerful individuals wanted complete control of the company. When he refused to cooperate, problems began. Suddenly accusations appeared. Debts appeared. Threats appeared. And eventually... His life collapsed. "Why didn't you fight?" The question slipped out before she could stop it. Pain filled his face. "I was afraid." The answer sounded honest. Painfully honest. Yet it still frustrated her. Because his fear had destroyed so many lives. Including hers. --- Meanwhile, Vanessa was losing patience. Every report she received made her angrier. Instead of growing apart, Adrian and Didi seemed closer than ever. That was unacceptable. She sat inside her apartment reviewing documents. Then her phone rang. "Hello?" The investigator's voice answered. "We found additional files." Immediately Vanessa smiled. "What kind of files?" "Records connected to the old case." Her smile widened. Perfect. This was exactly what she needed. By the time she ended the call, a new plan had already formed inside her mind. A cruel plan. A dangerous plan. And unfortunately for Didi... A very effective one. --- Episode 24 The Beginning of a New Dream Three days later, Didi tried to focus on positive things. The scholarship. University. The future. She desperately needed something good. Something hopeful. Something that wasn't connected to secrets and betrayals. That morning began like every other. She cleaned the apartment. Prepared tea for her mother. Organized medication. Then a knock sounded at the door. "Didi!" A delivery rider stood outside. "You have a letter." Her heart immediately started racing. Because she recognized the logo. The scholarship foundation. For several seconds she simply stared at the envelope. Afraid to open it. Afraid to hope. Afraid to be disappointed. Mama walked over. "What is it?" Didi handed her the envelope silently. The older woman's eyes widened. "Open it." "What if I failed?" "You won't know until you read it." Didi swallowed hard. Then carefully opened the letter. The words blurred before her eyes. She blinked. Read again. Then froze. The world stopped. Mama grabbed the paper. Read it. Then screamed. "You got it!" The letter slipped from Didi's hands. Tears immediately filled her eyes. Accepted. She had been accepted. After everything. After years of struggle. After every sacrifice. After every painful setback. Her dream was finally becoming reality. The scholarship covered tuition. Books. Accommodation. Everything. For several seconds she couldn't breathe. Couldn't think. Couldn't speak. Then she broke down crying. Mama hugged her tightly. And for the first time in years, both women cried tears of happiness. --- That evening, Didi received another surprise. A knock sounded at the door. When she opened it, Adrian stood outside holding flowers. For a moment, neither spoke. Then he smiled. A warm smile. The kind that always made her heart beat faster. "Congratulations." Didi accepted the flowers. "Thank you." "You deserve it." The sincerity in his voice made her smile. Soon they were sitting together inside the apartment. Talking. Laughing. Celebrating. For once, life felt normal. For once, life felt kind. At one point, Mama excused herself and disappeared into the bedroom. Leaving them alone. An awkward silence followed. Not uncomfortable. Just different. Adrian looked at her. "You know something?" "What?" "I never doubted you'd get it." Didi laughed. "I doubted myself enough for both of us." His expression softened. "You shouldn't." Their eyes met. For several seconds neither looked away. The atmosphere changed. Subtly. Dangerously. Didi felt her heartbeat quicken. Adrian seemed affected too. Then suddenly the electricity went out. The entire building plunged into darkness. Groans echoed from neighboring apartments. Didi laughed softly. "Perfect timing." A few moments later she lit a candle. Its warm glow illuminated the room. And suddenly everything felt more intimate. More personal. More romantic. The soft light danced across her face. Adrian found himself staring. Completely forgetting what he intended to say. "What?" Didi asked. He smiled. "Nothing." But it wasn't nothing. Not anymore. Because somewhere between hospital visits and scholarship applications... He had fallen for her. And deep down... She was beginning to fall for him too. --- Across the city, Vanessa sat alone in her apartment. A file rested on the table before her. Inside were documents connected to the old scandal. Documents capable of damaging reputations. Destroying relationships. Changing lives. Slowly, she opened her laptop. Then attached the files to an email. Her finger hovered over the send button. A smile appeared. Cold. Satisfied. Dangerous. "Let's see how strong your relationship really is." She clicked send. And somewhere in the darkness of the city... A storm quietly began. One that would soon test Didi, Adrian, and everyone connected to them. End of Episode 24.
