"She's waking up! Will she be okay?"
"Well, let's hope for both your sakes that she's not suffering from any serious injury."
Whose voices are those? What are they talking about?
My head hurt. I tried to get up but my head felt so heavy.
"Take it easy. Don't get up. Just lie down and rest."
I looked up to see who it was. Striking green eyes looked worriedly at me. "Where am I? Who are you?"
"I'm Doctor Nyx. You were in a car accident two days ago. My cousin here, Rhys, was driving the car."
"Car accident? Two days ago? Oh, god. Does my family know? They're probably worried about me."
"You weren't carrying a phone or any ID, so we couldn't get ahold of your family members."
"Oh no. Can I please borrow your phone? Just need to call my brother."
"Sure, here. Just make it quick. You should be resting and we need to do a couple of checks to make sure you're okay."
I nodded. I typed my brother's phone number and hit the call button.
"Hello?"
"Kev?"
"Elle?! Thank god! Where are you? I've been calling you for days. Are you okay?"
"Yes, Kev. I'm fine. Just had a little accident but I'm okay. Don't worry. I'm in a hospital right now. Um, can you bring me some clothes? And some money?"
"Of course, Elle. Which hospital are you staying at? I'll go there right away."
"Thanks Kev. I'll text you the address and room number."
A half hour later, Kevin and Dani were standing at the door.
"Tita!" Dani ran towards my bed and was about to jump on top of me, but Kevin stopped her.
"Dani, no! Tita Elle is not feeling well right now. We should be gentle with her, do you understand?"
"Okay, papa. What happened to you, Tita? Your face looks purple."
"I'm fine, honey. Just a little tired. Give Tita a kiss, won't you?"
She happily obliged and kissed me on the cheek.
"Now I feel better," I laughed.
"Dani, can you bring these fruits to the table please and let Tita and I talk first?"
"Okay, papa." She grabbed the paper bag from Kevin's hands and smiled at me before walking away.
Kevin then looked at me seriously. "Tell me exactly what happened, Elle."
"It was just an accident. I wasn't paying attention when I crossed the street and a car hit me."
"What?! You're lucky you're alive! I was so worried when I couldn't reach you. I was about to have a heart attack! Don't you dare let this happen again."
I chuckled. "It's not as if I wanted this to happen. Well, actually I might, if someone paid me a billion dollars."
"This is not something to joke about, Elle!"
"Fine, fine. Gosh, don't get so worked up. I'm okay, don't worry about me. The doctor said I'm not suffering from any serious injury. Got some bruises here and there but I'll survive."
"Thank god for that. Where's the doctor anyway? I'll talk to him myself."
"His shift just ended. You won't be able to see him today," I lied.
Kevin and Dani went home a few hours later. Kevin didn't want to go but I insisted. I was worried Dani might get sick if she stayed longer at the hospital.
I was finally falling asleep when the door opened.
"Hi. Sorry for disturbing you but I need to check how you're doing. What should I call you, by the way?"
"My name's Firella, but you can call me Elle."
The doctor asked me a bunch of questions and had the nurse get a blood sample. After what felt like forever, he asked me if I needed anything.
"No, thank you. I'm fine."
"Okay. Um, I'm sorry about the accident. I'd like to apologize to you on behalf of my cousin. He's been careless all his life and doesn't take things too seriously. I was afraid he didn't even check up on you."
"It's okay. It was an accident. It's not his fault. He actually came here earlier and apologized." I smiled. "I told him it was my fault for not looking where I was walking. He already looked so guilty and stressed, it wouldn't help to blame him for what happened."
"Thank you for understanding, Elle."
"Again, not his fault."
With that said, he left and closed the door gently.
The next couple of days went by slowly. I had to keep a brave front after I told Kevin that Maven and I got divorced. I didn't want him to see me helpless and sad. But in the evenings when I'm finally alone, I couldn't help but cry. The doctors had me undergo a series of tests and after four days of constant back and forth in laboratory rooms, I finally got the clear to go home. If there was even a home to go to.
Kevin would pick me up. He insisted that I stay at his home for a few weeks while I recuperate. He'd be arriving any minute now, so I decided to go to the bathroom to fix myself up a bit and change my clothes.
I was putting on a pair of shorts when I suddenly felt dizzy and lost my balance. I fell to the ground with a thud. I probably hit my head on the sink as I could feel something wet at the side of my head.
I heard the door open. Then someone picked me up.
"My god, you're not even out the door yet and you've already had another accident."
"I, uh..."
"You should be extra careful." He gently placed me down on the bed and checked my head. "There's a small cut on the right side of your head. Better to have that checked, especially since you were just in a car accident."
"It's probably not that serious. Can you just prescribe me some medicine so I can go home now?"
"I will. After you get it checked. No buts."
I frowned and was about to complain when my brother stepped into the room.
"Elle? What happened? You don't look so good."
"I'm fine. Just feeling a bit nauseous."
"Hi, I'm Nyx, Elle's doctor. I was just telling Elle to have her head checked asap."
"Why? Is there anything wrong with her?"
"Nothing to be alarmed about. I just want to make sure everything's in order."
"Oh. Of course. Come on then, Elle."
"But Kev, I'm fine. Let's just go."
"No buts. You heard what the doctor said."
I screamed silently in frustration. I stared daggers at the damned doctor but he just grinned. That manipulative devil!
That night, the doctor stopped by my room to check up on me.
"Hey there, how are you?"
"Annoyed. Because of you, I had to spend another miserable day here."
"I'm sorry you feel that way. But it's my duty to look after my patients."
"And it's my prerogative to go home if I want to."
"I don't remember forcing you to stay."
"Yes, but you used my brother to make me."
"Okay, fine. I'm sorry for that. It's just you were so stubborn, I had to be creative." He smiled shyly.
I rolled my eyes at him. "Whatever. I need to go."
"Where are you going?"
"To get some fresh air."
"You're not sneaking away, are you?"
"Huh, I wouldn't have told you if I was sneaking away."
"Right." He snickered. "Well, if you really want some fresh air, I can show you a place."
I raised my brows at him, trying to figure out what he was up to.
"You'll like it, I promise."
"Hmm.. fine. Lead the way."
He took me to the rooftop. When he pushed open the door, I expected a sea of twinkling lights from the surrounding buildings. But the sight took my breath away. The deck was bathed in soft yellow lights, perfect for enjoying the 360-degree panoramic view of the cityscape. A fire pit and a set of wooden chairs are placed in the center of the floor. Plants and flowers adorned the corners and a mixture of sweet, spicy, woodsy scent permeated the air. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes for a second. When I opened them, Nyx was smiling at me.
"Like it?"
I smiled at him and said, "I love it!"
"Great. Only a handful of people have access to this place, so you can cry here secretly whenever you want." And he winked at me knowingly.
