Last night was a welcome reprieve from my constant bouts of misery and self-pity. Nyx and I talked for a while, but he eventually excused himself so I could have a moment to myself.
I missed Maven. I missed Steph. And I wondered how Bianca was doing. Did they ever think of me at all? I gave myself a chance to grieve so I could finally start to move on. But there was a bit of anger that started to build in myself as well.
"Earth to Elle," someone sing-songed.
I looked behind me and there was Nyx, standing in the doorway.
"Hi. Come in."
"I just ran into your brother on my way here. He told me to let you know he'd be stopping by the convenience store first."
"Oh. Okay, thanks for letting me know."
"So, how are you? All good?"
"Yeah. But I'm definitely gonna miss the roof deck," I said, beaming at him.
"You're welcome to go there anytime."
"Thanks, but I..."
"Elle! Oh my god, are you okay?"
"Jackie?! What are you doing here?"
"I've been trying to reach you for days now! I had to pressure the HR to give me your address and emergency contact. Thank god your brother picked up my call this morning and told me you were in the hospital. You wretched girl, I was so worried." She slapped my arm. But after she calmed down, she gave me a big hug.
"I'm sorry, I didn't notice you called."
"That's not important now. What happened? Are you okay?"
"Yes, I'm fine. See?" I made a 360-degree turn, showing her I was perfectly okay.
"Thank god. Come on then, let's go. I told your brother we'd meet him in the car."
"Okay." I turned to Nyx. "Thank you so much for your help, Doctor Nyx."
"Just call me Nyx, please. I'd like to think we're friends now. And hello to you, too, Jackie."
Jackie snapped her head back at the mention of her name. "Nyx?! THE Nyx? Oh my god, it IS you. Since when have you been back?"
"Six months ago."
"Wait, you two know each other?" I asked, looking back and forth between Jackie and Nyx.
"Yes. Our parents are friends. My mother used to pester me to go out with him. But he's just not my type, you know, even though he's been basically a celebrity since we were kids," Jackie enthused.
"Yeah, because she only had eyes for Wynter, their butler's son. Did she tell you that, Elle?" Nyx looked briefly at me, then back to Jackie's. "But at least you realized how great of a catch I am, Jackie." He playfully rumpled his hair and puffed out his chest.
Jackie and I rolled our eyes at him, grinning.
I let Jackie and Nyx catch up while I gathered my things. A few minutes later, I told Jackie I was ready.
Nyx took my bags and gestured for me to go on ahead first.
I was looking at my phone when I walked out the door and accidentally bumped into someone. That someone gripped me by the arm to stop me from falling. I steadied myself and looked up to say thank you, only to see Maven's face. And that face I had been dying to see suddenly exploded with anger.
"You again! When in hell would I stop seeing your f*cking face?"
"Hey, watch your mouth!" Jackie yelled.
"M-Maven?" I stammered. I can't believe he's here in front of me.
"Don't call me that."
I don't know how long we just stared at each other. Just a few seconds, probably. If only I could spend a lifetime looking at his face, I'd be more than happy. I blinked back my tears. Only then did I notice what was in front of Maven - a wheelchair, where Bianca was sitting, looking furiously at me. She grabbed the armrests and tried to stand up but her legs wouldn't move.
"You b***h, I'm gonna kill you!" Bianca shrieked, her arms flailing trying to reach me. Maven held her by the arms. "Let me go, I'm gonna kill her! Let me go!"
"Calm down, Bianca!" Maven knelt in front of Bianca. "I'll deal with her myself. Please calm down. This isn't good for you."
Bianca was getting hysterical and out of breath. "She ruined my l-l-life, Maven!" I won't-wont just let her go!" She clawed at her face out of frustration.
"Bianca, I didn't do anything to you, I swear!"
"Shut up! I'm fed up with you and your lies! I warned you not to come near us again, didn't I? Seems like you didn't even listen. I'll come for you and your family. You will wish you had never met any of us!" Maven shouted at me.
"Please, let's all calm down for a second. This is a hospital. You should settle your personal issues privately," Nyx interjected and stepped between Maven and I. "Elle, let's just go."
"I am not finished yet. And who the hell are you?"
"My name's Nyx, a resident doctor here." Nyx held out his hand to Maven, but Maven just looked at it and stared angrily at him.
"I don't f*cking care who you are. Firella and I have some things to discuss."
Jackie moved in front of Maven. "No, she doesn't. She has nothing to say that you are willing to hear. So just go and look after your sister. She obviously needs attention." She grabbed my hand and dragged me to the parking lot.
We waited silently for Kevin in the car. Jackie didn't push me to talk. I was grateful, since I didn't have anything I wanted to say. I felt humiliated and helpless. I thought the worst was finally over. But here I was again.
I screamed silently.
Kevin opened the driver's side door and got in. "Finally. Let's go!" he said enthusiastically, not noticing the tense atmosphere.
My phone pinged. I slid up the screen and opened the text message.
"I will destroy you."
