Chapter 21

1024 Words
By the time Fu Shuyang realized something was wrong, Jin Mu had already secretly registered the game and filed patents for the core technology Fu had come up with. It was during summer break that Fu, thinking of the patent issue, looked it up—only to discover it had already been filed under Jin Mu’s name. Shocked and furious, he then found all his backup files on his computer were mysteriously gone. Still not wanting to believe it, Fu confronted Jin Mu. But Jin turned the tables, claiming all the work was his idea. He threatened that if Fu dared to make a fuss, he would make sure Fu couldn’t stay in school. Not just his master’s degree—he’d make even his bachelor’s disappear. Jin Mu had power and connections. Without solid evidence, Fu stood no chance. After intimidating him, Jin offered “compensation”: he’d give Fu a villa as payment for his contributions. A villa in Baihe Tower neighborhood—now worthless at just a million. But a hit game could earn them fortunes. The real issue wasn’t money. Fu Shuyang had deeply respected Jin Mu. This betrayal shattered his faith. Fu refused the house, but Jin didn’t care. Except for Jin Mu, Fu had only ever casually mentioned his game ideas to Chu Yeran and Meng Tao. Neither of them played games, and no evidence was left. They believed Fu, but were powerless. They advised him to bide his time, accept what was offered, and wait for revenge. Early in the summer, Fu’s mood was erratic, which worried them. By late July, Fu suddenly came around and accepted the deal. He completed the property transfer and moved into the villa. Chu Yeran even stayed with him for a few nights to make sure he was okay before leaving. Then came Xu Mei. Fu actively reached out to Chu Yeran to get her a free training spot. Chu was deeply moved. Xu Mei felt like a ray of hope to Fu, and he wanted the two of them together. But today, Fu didn’t show up at school. Chu Yeran was worried. After asking around, he got insider news—Fu Shuyang had voluntarily applied to withdraw from school. They tried calling him, but no answer. Xu Mei happened to be looking for him too, so Chu, feeling that Xu Mei held a special place in Fu’s heart, decided to talk to her. “Do you believe in God-Fu?” Meng Tao asked Xu Mei. People tend to side with professors, especially reputable ones. That’s why Jin Mu was so fearless. But Xu Mei nodded without hesitation. “I believe him.” She’d spent time with Fu Shuyang. She knew the kind of person he was. And besides—she knew the future plot. Jin Mu would later profit massively from an e-sports game and try to crush Fu, who was just emerging. That was when the events from Han Shu’s words would occur—Jin Mu eventually lost to Fu Shuyang. The company mentioned in that speech? It was the game company. So now, all the reasons behind Fu Shuyang’s withdrawal, the so-called “betrayal of his mentor,” had become clear. “I’m going back to Baihe Tower,” Xu Mei said after understanding Fu’s pain. “I’ll come with you,” Chu Yeran offered immediately. “No need. Fu might not be at home. You guys know the places he likes. Let’s split up,” Xu Mei shook her head quickly. “Also, use your connections to see if we can cancel his withdrawal application. And check if it’s possible to change advisors. Let’s keep in touch and share any updates.” Chu Yeran agreed before realizing Xu Mei had just taken charge. She’d always seemed casual and carefree—but now, her composure and determination surprised him. Rather than feeling offended, he felt relieved. Fu was in good hands. “There’s still one day left for new student registration. So it’s fine not to return to campus tonight. But there’s a class meeting tomorrow. Whether you find him or not, you have to come back tomorrow night,” he reminded her. “We’ll plan further then.” Xu Mei nodded and dashed out of campus. She hailed a ride via app, only realizing after getting in that she had forgotten her keys and bag. She hesitated but didn’t turn back. She could pay with her phone, and if needed, she’d ask the building management for help. She was worried Fu might’ve gotten sick from last night’s rain. If he passed out at home, it would be too late—so she couldn’t afford to waste time. By the time she returned to the neighborhood, it was already dark. The guard let her in and told her Fu hadn’t come back. She ran to his door. The iron gate was locked, so at least he wasn’t lying unconscious inside. That was a relief. Still no answer on the phone. So she texted him: I’ll wait for you here tonight. Then she found a spot and crouched down to wait. Fu Shuyang never replied. The sky worsened. Wind picked up, and rain was coming fast. There was a pavilion nearby where she could’ve stayed dry. But she was afraid if Fu returned and missed her, the wait would be in vain. After a moment of hesitation, she walked to the tall iron gate, stretched, and prepared to climb over it. Tonight, she would sleep at Fu’s doorstep. The gate was tall, but Xu Mei had been a tree-climbing pro as a kid—this wasn’t so bad. As long as she didn’t look down, climbing wasn’t hard. But just as she was about to make it over, she heard footsteps. “What are you doing?” came Fu Shuyang’s flat voice. Startled, Xu Mei slipped—her foot missed a step—and she fell. Fu Shuyang had been holding a bottle of liquor. But by the time he realized what was happening, the bottle was gone. He had already dropped it—so he could catch her.
