Chapter 20Pop! I bolt upright on the sofa, staring around the room and beyond the windows for the sound that pulled me from sleep. Was I dreaming? A thick, wool throw lies on the floor beside the couch. It must have fallen when I sprang from the sofa. Leaning over, I pick it up, and slide back into the sofa, wondering if Bruce covered me as I slept. Strangely muddled with no concept of time, reality seems deceptive, an illusion I've mistakenly stepped into. I close my eyes and will it all a nightmare, hoping I'll wake in my bed days before Kayla's murder, and her frantic phone call. But it's not a dream and my eyes open to Wheaton's library. I stare at the edge of the couch, the spot Kayla sat a week ago, pulling the boot from her swollen ankle. Bruce said she'd been at the office snooping
