Chapter Seventeen: After the Fall

The forest clearing was silent except for the whisper of leaves. The sun had risen higher now, spilling light across the clearing—but Asia didn’t notice. She had collapsed, drained, barely conscious, energy sapped by the raw power she had tried to control. Jack knelt beside her immediately, stormy blue eyes scanning her face, tracing the rise and fall of her chest. His wolf-sense told him she was alive, but barely. Concern tightened his features—something she had never seen in him before. “You’re not getting up like this,” he muttered, voice low, almost growling. “I won’t let you risk your life for pride.” Without warning, he lifted her with ease, her small body almost weightless in his hands. His presence radiated strength and control, like the forest itself bowed to him. She murmured something unintelligible but remained unconscious. Arrival at Home The front door opened with a soft click. Luna Mara had just stepped out of the kitchen when Jack entered, carrying Asia effortlessly. Her amber eyes widened, picking up the aura around him—not fully human, not fully wolf, but a force to reckon with. “Jack…?” she whispered, ears twitching slightly, noticing his energy. Asia’s wolf stirred inside her, tense, bristling. Who…? Jack’s gaze was calm but protective, and he didn’t speak more than necessary. “She overexerted herself. She needs rest.” Her mother tilted her head, scanning him carefully, instincts sharp. “She is safe?” she asked, voice calm but authoritative, measuring the strength he radiates. Jack nodded, gently laying Asia on her bed. He adjusted the covers lightly, careful, almost reverent. “She will be,” he said softly. “She’s stronger than she knows. But she pushed too far today.” Her father appeared from the hallway, brow furrowed. “And you are…?” “Jack,” he said simply, eyes flicking briefly to Asia as if confirming her safety. “I’m… a friend.” Luna Mara’s lips curved faintly, recognizing his aura. “Interesting… someone strong enough to steady her. Finally.” Asia stirred slightly, opening stormy blue eyes to see Jack still standing near her bed, gaze soft, concerned, and infinitely aware. “Jack…” she murmured weakly, voice hoarse. “You… brought me home?” He nodded, stormy blue eyes locked on hers. “Of course. You overextended yourself. You could have been seriously injured.” Her wolf stirred inside her chest, purring softly, coiling with both relief and awe. He is… protective. He cares. Asia sat up slowly, still trembling from the strain, and looked at her parents, then back at him. “You… you didn’t have to,” she said quietly, voice tight. Jack’s gaze softened slightly. “I did. I won’t let you be reckless and hurt yourself.” Luna Mara’s amber eyes softened, but her voice carried quiet authority. “You have a sense of responsibility, I see. Rare… and worth noting.” Asia groaned, pressing a hand to her forehead. Her wolf growled low, amused. Pack… always analyzing. Jack gave a small, almost imperceptible smile, still keeping his stormy blue eyes on her. “Rest,” he said simply. “You’ll need strength for what’s coming.” Asia nodded, leaning back against her pillows, stormy blue eyes following him as he lingered near the doorway, still concerned, still watching, still… larger than life. Her wolf purred quietly, approving, coiling tighter. This… is only the beginning.
