Chapter Fifteen: Power, Pride, and Jealousy

596 Words
The morning sunlight spilled through the school’s front windows, catching dust motes in the air like tiny sparks. Students milled about, lockers slammed, and the usual chaos of a high school day hummed in the background. Asia walked the halls, wolf coiled beneath her skin, senses sharp. Something in the air told her she wasn’t alone—not in the usual way. And then she saw him. Jack. Tall. Taller than anyone she had ever seen—at least six-foot-five, broad-shouldered, walking with a casual confidence that made the air hum. His deep blue eyes mirrored hers perfectly, stormy and endless, and his presence alone made students instinctively give him space. Even Kael, leaning against a locker nearby, tensed slightly, golden eyes narrowing. Jack’s gaze landed on Asia immediately. His step slowed, just a fraction, and her wolf stirred violently. Stronger… it whispered. Older… more… than you imagined. Asia felt a strange pull, power vibrating in her veins, as if some part of her recognized him beyond understanding. He brushed past her in the crowded hallway—just lightly—but the pressure made her stumble slightly. Jack’s hand shot out, steadying her effortlessly. His touch was firm, protective, almost… comforting. “You need to keep your balance,” he said quietly, voice low and calm, deep like rolling thunder. “You’re tense. Too tense.” Blue eyes met blue. Asia’s wolf snarled inside her, both thrilled and wary. This is him. The real one. The White Wolf. Kael, watching from across the hall, smirked but a hint of something—jealousy? irritation?—flickered across his golden eyes. “Looks like someone’s got a new friend,” he muttered under his breath. Asia growled, but low. She didn’t like the way Kael’s smirk cut across the tension. Jack tilted his head, observing both of them. “I see you have… interesting company.” His eyes flicked toward Kael, sharp and calculating. He’s not dangerous… not yet. But he’s testing you. Kael’s jaw tightened. “Interesting… huh,” he said, voice smooth but cold. “I suppose I should be flattered?” “Not exactly,” Jack said, voice calm, almost amused. “But don’t worry. I’m not here to fight anyone… not yet.” Asia’s heart pounded. Her wolf coiled tightly, sensing the power rolling off Jack, massive, endless, raw. Stronger than him, it whispered, and Kael’s presence suddenly felt… smaller, inferior, like he was being sized up. Kael’s gold eyes flicked between them. “I’ll remember this,” he murmured, a low growl beneath the words. “You don’t forget a rival.” Jack smiled faintly, just enough to show sharp, clean teeth, and his presence seemed to fill the hallway. “Neither do I.” Asia’s blue eyes narrowed, stormy, her wolf vibrating with anticipation. Two predators. Two dangerous forces. And she was stuck in the middle, heart hammering, knowing that the game had just begun. The bell rang. Students scattered, unaware of the tension crackling like lightning between the three of them. Jack lingered just a moment longer, brushing past her lightly again. Asia almost stumbled, but he steadied her, fingers grazing hers. The shock of his strength and presence left her breathless. Kael, watching, scowled and turned away, concealing a flicker of irritation—or was it jealousy? Asia didn’t care. Not yet. Her wolf coiled tight, whispering: This is bigger than any fight with Kael. This is the real test. And for the first time, Asia realized she wasn’t just learning to survive. She was learning to exist… between predators.
