The morning sun spilled into the living room, hitting Asia and Jack as they sat sipping tea, still wrapped in blankets from the night before.
To humans, it was cozy. To Kael, it was apocalyptic.
He stormed into the room, cape—er, jacket—flying behind him, hair perfectly mussed in that “I’m angry but fashionable” way. His eyes scanned them, and then widened.
“Oh no. Oh no. Ohhhhh no.”
Asia raised an eyebrow. “Kael… what is it now?”
Kael froze mid-step, pointing dramatically at the two of them. “Do you realize what I am seeing?!”
Jack blinked slowly. “Yes. Tea. Blankets. Morning sunlight. We see it.”
“No!” Kael shouted, throwing his hands into the air. “The… the… bonding! The cuddling! The almost-terrifyingly obvious mate energy! You—” He jabbed a finger at Jack. “You!—blue-eyed, smug, ridiculously perfect—are trying to—”
Asia groaned. “Kael, please.”
Kael spun toward her. “And you! Curling up like… like a tiny storm of wolf energy! This is… catastrophic! Absolutely catastrophic!”
Jack leaned back in his chair, clearly amused. “Catastrophic, huh?”
Kael’s gaze snapped to him. “Yes! Catastrophic! I’m talking full-on cosmic disaster-level catastrophic! Do you understand how dangerous this is?!”
Asia pinched the bridge of her nose. “Kael, it’s just… a blanket. We’re just… talking!”
“Talking?!” Kael shrieked. “Do not mock me! I’ve seen this before! One minute: talking. Next minute: shared secrets, cuddling, eye-locking—the whole mating ritual blueprint for wolves who think humans won’t notice!”
Jack chuckled. “Humans? We’re wolves.”
Kael gasped. “Exactly! Humans won’t notice, but I do! And that’s what matters!”
Asia groaned louder. “I hate you so much right now.”
Kael gasped, placing a hand on his chest. “Hate?! You can’t hate me! I am indispensable! I am heroic! I am… your personal chaos monitor!”
Jack smirked. “Chaos monitor… I like that.”
Kael spun toward him. “Do not like that! That is my title! I earned it! It took years of sarcasm, intimidation, and sheer ridiculousness!”
Asia buried her face in her hands. “Why did I ever let him follow me?”
Kael ignored her. “You didn’t ‘let’ me! You needed me! And now I have witnessed… this!” He gestured wildly at the blanket, the tea, and the way Asia kept glancing at Jack like he was the only safe thing in the world. “Do you know what this is? Bonding! Growth! Emotionally-charged wolf behavior! Danger levels: maximum!”
Jack laughed outright. “Maximum, huh?”
“Yes!” Kael shouted. “Maximum! If this continues unchecked, there will be: emotional development, heart growth, unexpected trust, and—dare I say it—affection! Dangerous, dangerous affection!”
Asia peeked at him through her fingers. “Kael, please… can you not?”
Kael leaned forward, whispering dramatically: “I cannot! My hero instincts compel me! The cosmos… it demands vigilance!”
Jack rolled his eyes, clearly entertained. “You realize you sound like a Greek chorus, right?”
Kael threw himself onto the sofa for dramatic effect. “A Greek chorus is exactly what I am! Narrating, warning, philosophizing, and occasionally throwing in sarcasm! It’s a full-time heroic job!”
Asia muttered under her breath, “I’m going to strangle him.”
Kael perked up. “Good! Excellent! That’s part of the emotional training I provide. Bonding through mild threats!”
Jack laughed so hard he almost spilled his tea. “Mild threats? Really?”
Kael gasped in offense. “I never said mild! I said appropriate-for-maximum-survival threats! Huge difference!”
Asia groaned, but even she couldn’t help laughing. Kael’s ridiculous overreaction, combined with the sheer absurdity of his commentary, had her in stitches.
“And one more thing!” Kael continued, suddenly standing on the table. “If I see one more glance, one more smile, one more—”
“Kael!” Asia shouted. “Sit down before you fall off!”
He froze. Then slowly, dramatically, sat down again, placing a hand over his heart. “Fine. But only because this couch is—clearly—dangerously low to the ground. I am a hero; I must survive to continue protecting you!”
Jack leaned closer to Asia. “You know… for all his chaos, he might actually be helping.”
Asia blinked at him. “…I think you’re right.”
Kael overheard and gasped. “Helping?! You dare say I am helping?! I am helping!”
Asia threw her hands in the air. “Yes! You are! I hate that it works!”
Kael smiled smugly. “Exactly. That’s why I’m indispensable!”
Jack shook his head, smiling. “Indispensable, indeed. Maximum chaos, maximum protection, maximum ridiculousness.”
Kael gave a dramatic bow. “Thank you. Thank you! I accept this recognition graciously. And now… breakfast! Because even heroes need sustenance to continue narrating destiny!”
Asia groaned one final time, realizing she’d never get a moment of peace with him around.
But… somehow, the day already felt lighter, brighter, and a little funnier with Kael’s “maximum chaos” in full swing.
