EYES IN THE SHADOWS

Chapter 4: Eyes in the Shadows The deeper Ava ventured into Silver Forest, the more uneasy she became. The forest was unlike anything she had ever seen. The trees were enormous, their trunks so wide that it would take several wolves joining hands to wrap around them. Their branches stretched high into the sky, creating a canopy that blocked most of the sunlight. Everything felt ancient. Almost alive. The air was cooler here. Quieter. Too quiet. Ava tightened her grip on the strap of her bag. Back in Moonclaw Pack, she had heard countless stories about Silver Forest. Most of them were meant to scare children. Stories about monsters. Spirits. Rogue wolves. Lycan warriors. She had never believed most of them. Now she wasn't so sure. A twig snapped somewhere behind her. Ava froze. Her heart skipped a beat. Slowly, she turned around. Nothing. Only trees. Shadows. Silence. She frowned. Maybe it was an animal. Trying to calm herself, she continued walking. But a strange feeling lingered. The feeling of being watched. --- Several miles away, hidden among the shadows, a large figure stood motionless. Golden eyes followed Ava's every movement. The stranger's scent drifted through the forest. Female. Young. Wolf. The man narrowed his eyes. She didn't belong here. Very few wolves entered Silver Forest willingly. Even fewer traveled alone. Yet there she was. Walking deeper into one of the most dangerous territories on the continent. A low growl rumbled in his chest. She was either brave. Or foolish. Possibly both. His wolf stirred beneath his skin. Restless. Curious. Interested. The reaction irritated him. He ignored it. For now. --- By late afternoon, Ava's feet ached. She hadn't realized how exhausting traveling alone could be. Back at the pack, hunting parties always moved together. There was safety in numbers. Out here, she had only herself. The realization was both frightening and empowering. She reached a small stream and knelt beside it. The cold water felt refreshing against her skin. After drinking, she splashed some water onto her face. For the first time in days, she felt somewhat human again. The constant ache in her chest had lessened. It was still there. But not as overwhelming. Maybe distance was helping. Maybe leaving Moonclaw had been the right choice. A sudden rustling sound interrupted her thoughts. Ava immediately stood. Every instinct screamed at her. Danger. The bushes nearby shook violently. Then something emerged. A wolf. No. Not a wolf. A rogue. His clothes were torn. His beard was unkempt. His eyes held the wild look common among wolves who had abandoned their packs. Ava's stomach dropped. Rogues were dangerous. Unpredictable. Many survived through theft and violence. The rogue smiled. It wasn't a friendly smile. "Well," he said. "What do we have here?" Ava slowly stepped backward. "Just passing through." His gaze traveled over her. The bag. The supplies. The weapon at her waist. His smile widened. "Looks like you've got useful things." Ava's pulse quickened. "Leave me alone." The rogue laughed. "You don't seem to understand." He took a step forward. "You don't get to tell me what to do." Fear crawled up Ava's spine. But she refused to let him see it. She had spent years being underestimated. She wasn't about to start acting helpless now. "Last warning." The rogue laughed again. Then he lunged. --- Ava reacted instantly. Years of training kicked in. She sidestepped his attack and shoved him away. The rogue stumbled but quickly recovered. Surprise flashed across his face. "Got some fight in you." Ava drew her hunting knife. Her heart raced. She had never been in a real fight before. Training was one thing. This was something else entirely. The rogue attacked again. This time faster. Stronger. Ava blocked the strike but nearly lost her balance. The impact sent pain shooting through her arm. He was bigger than her. Stronger than her. More experienced. And he knew it. The rogue grinned. "You should've stayed with your pack." Ava's jaw clenched. Anger flared inside her. Moonclaw. Ethan. The rejection. The humiliation. Everything came rushing back. "No." She pushed forward suddenly. The rogue wasn't expecting it. Her knife sliced across his arm. Blood appeared instantly. The rogue snarled. His eyes flashed with fury. "You stupid girl!" The next attack came with terrifying speed. Ava barely managed to dodge. The rogue grabbed her shoulder. Pain exploded through her body as she hit the ground. Her knife flew from her hand. Panic surged. The rogue towered above her. Smiling. Victorious. For the first time, Ava truly believed she might die. --- From the shadows, golden eyes narrowed. The observer had watched long enough. The rogue raised his hand. Then froze. A powerful growl echoed through the forest. The sound was unlike anything Ava had ever heard. Deep. Dangerous. Predatory. Every creature in the area seemed to go silent. The rogue's face turned pale. Slowly, he looked toward the trees. Fear replaced his confidence instantly. "No..." A massive figure stepped from the shadows. Over six feet tall. Broad shoulders. Black clothing. Dark hair. And eyes that glowed gold beneath the fading sunlight. The air itself seemed to change around him. Power radiated from every inch of his body. The rogue staggered backward. "T-The Lycan..." Ava's breath caught. Lycan? Her heart nearly stopped. Stories flooded her mind. Ancient warriors. Stronger than ordinary wolves. Feared across every territory. The stranger said nothing. He simply stared at the rogue. That stare alone was enough. The rogue turned and ran. As fast as he could. Disappearing into the forest without looking back. Silence followed. Ava remained on the ground. Too shocked to move. Too stunned to speak. The stranger's golden eyes shifted toward her. Their gazes met. For one strange moment, the world seemed to disappear. Ava couldn't explain it. Couldn't understand it. But something about him felt familiar. Not familiar in appearance. She had never seen him before. Yet a strange sensation settled in her chest. Warm. Comforting. Confusing. The man frowned slightly. As if he felt it too. Then his expression hardened. "You shouldn't be here." His voice was deep and commanding. Ava swallowed. The words finally returned to her. "I could say the same thing." One dark eyebrow lifted. To her surprise, the corner of his mouth twitched. Almost like he was fighting a smile. Almost. The moment disappeared quickly. His expression became unreadable once more. "Can you stand?" Ava nodded. Though her legs felt shaky. She pushed herself upright. The stranger studied her carefully. As though trying to solve a puzzle. "You traveled here alone?" "Yes." His frown deepened. "That was foolish." Ava bristled immediately. "I was doing fine." The man glanced toward the direction the rogue had fled. Ava rolled her eyes. "Okay, mostly fine." A brief silence passed. Then something caught Ava's attention. Blood. There was blood on the stranger's side. A lot of it. Hidden beneath his dark clothing. Her eyes widened. "You're hurt." The stranger immediately stiffened. His gaze sharpened. As though she had noticed something she wasn't supposed to see. For the first time, Ava realized something important. The powerful Lycan standing before her wasn't just dangerous. He was injured. Badly injured. And judging by the amount of blood... He might not survive much longer without help. Little did Ava know that helping him would change her life forever. Because the wounded stranger standing before her was not just any Lycan. He was Kael Draven. The Lycan King.
