Chapter 2: The Rejection
Ava's heart pounded so loudly she could barely hear anything else.
The sacred clearing had gone completely silent.
Hundreds of eyes were fixed on her and Ethan Ryder.
The mate bond between them was undeniable.
Every wolf present could sense it.
The Moon Goddess had spoken.
Ethan Ryder was her mate.
For a brief moment, Ava allowed herself to hope.
Maybe Ethan was simply shocked.
Maybe he needed a few seconds to process what had happened.
After all, she was shocked too.
The future Alpha of Moonclaw Pack.
Out of everyone in the pack, fate had chosen him.
A nervous smile tugged at her lips as she took another step toward him.
"Ethan..."
His name came out barely above a whisper.
The look on his face made her stop.
His eyes weren't filled with happiness.
They weren't filled with affection.
They were filled with frustration.
And something else.
Embarrassment.
The realization hit Ava like a punch to the stomach.
Around them, whispers spread through the crowd.
"His mate is Ava Blackwood?"
"No way."
"The future Luna?"
"Seriously?"
The words stung.
Ava pretended not to hear them.
But she heard every single one.
Ethan clenched his jaw.
For a moment, he looked away as if searching for an escape.
Ava's wolf whimpered inside her.
Something felt wrong.
Terribly wrong.
"Ethan?" she asked again.
The future Alpha finally looked directly at her.
The silence became suffocating.
Then he spoke.
"You are my mate."
A small spark of relief lit inside Ava.
At least he wasn't denying it.
At least—
"But this isn't what I wanted."
The spark died instantly.
Ava froze.
The crowd fell even quieter.
If that was possible.
Her pulse quickened.
"What do you mean?" she asked softly.
Ethan ran a hand through his hair.
For the first time, he looked uncomfortable.
"Ava..."
He sighed heavily.
"You know what's expected of me."
Confusion filled her.
"No."
His eyes hardened.
"I'm going to be Alpha someday."
A chill ran through her body.
"So?"
"So I need a strong Luna."
The words landed like stones.
Ava stared at him.
Not fully understanding.
Not wanting to understand.
Ethan continued.
"I need someone who can lead."
"I need someone respected."
"I need someone powerful."
Every sentence felt like a knife twisting deeper into her chest.
The crowd remained silent.
Nobody moved.
Nobody interrupted.
Everyone watched.
Ava's throat tightened.
"What are you saying?"
She already knew.
But she needed to hear him say it.
Needed to know she wasn't imagining this nightmare.
Ethan looked away.
For a second, guilt flickered across his face.
Then it disappeared.
"I can't accept this bond."
The world stopped.
Ava felt the ground vanish beneath her feet.
Her breathing became uneven.
No.
No, no, no.
This wasn't happening.
This couldn't be happening.
The Moon Goddess didn't make mistakes.
Mates didn't reject each other.
Not like this.
Not publicly.
Not in front of everyone.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
"Ethan..."
His expression remained cold.
"I reject you, Ava Blackwood."
Gasps erupted throughout the clearing.
The words echoed in Ava's ears.
Loud.
Cruel.
Unforgiving.
"I reject you as my mate."
Pain exploded through her chest.
A scream tore through her soul.
Her wolf howled in agony.
The bond connecting them shattered.
Ava stumbled backward.
The emotional pain was unlike anything she had ever experienced.
It felt as though her heart had been ripped apart.
She couldn't breathe.
Couldn't think.
Couldn't function.
Another tear rolled down her face.
Then another.
And another.
The crowd watched everything.
Every second.
Every painful moment.
Nobody looked away.
Some appeared shocked.
Others looked uncomfortable.
A few looked sympathetic.
But sympathy couldn't fix this.
Nothing could.
Ava had just been rejected.
Publicly.
Humiliated before her entire pack.
She felt broken.
Completely broken.
"Ethan..."
Her voice cracked.
"Why?"
For a brief moment, he looked uncertain.
As if he regretted what he had done.
Then a voice spoke from the crowd.
"Because he deserves better."
Ava turned.
Standing near the front was a beautiful young woman.
Luna Harper.
The Beta's daughter.
Tall.
Confident.
Admired by nearly everyone in the pack.
Ava immediately understood.
The whispers.
The rumors.
The stolen glances between them.
Luna stepped forward.
A smug smile played on her lips.
"The future Alpha needs a Luna worthy of him."
Ava's stomach twisted.
Luna looked her up and down.
Not even trying to hide her judgment.
"Someone strong."
"Someone respected."
"Someone capable."
The implication was obvious.
Ava was none of those things.
The crowd shifted uncomfortably.
Even some of Luna's friends looked embarrassed.
Marcus suddenly pushed through the gathering.
His face was thunderous.
"What the hell is wrong with you people?"
His roar echoed across the clearing.
Ava had never seen her brother this angry.
He stepped in front of her protectively.
"She's your mate, Ethan!"
Ethan remained silent.
Marcus pointed at him.
"You don't get to treat her like garbage because she isn't your perfect Luna."
"Marcus—" Ava whispered.
"No."
His voice shook with fury.
"No one gets to do this to you."
Ava's eyes filled with fresh tears.
For a moment, she wanted to disappear.
Wanted the earth to open and swallow her whole.
Everyone had seen.
Everyone would remember.
This moment would follow her forever.
The rejected mate.
The unwanted girl.
The Luna who never became Luna.
Elder Thorne stepped forward.
His expression was grim.
"Ethan Ryder."
The future Alpha looked up.
"You understand the consequences of your decision?"
Ethan nodded.
"I do."
The elder sighed.
"The bond is broken."
A heavy silence followed.
The ceremony was over.
At least for Ava.
The happiest night of her life had become the worst.
Marcus wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
"Come on."
She didn't resist.
Didn't speak.
Didn't even look back.
The crowd parted as they walked away.
Some wolves lowered their heads in sympathy.
Others whispered behind her back.
Ava heard fragments.
"Poor thing."
"I can't believe he rejected her."
"How embarrassing."
"Did you see her face?"
Each comment cut deeper.
By the time she reached home, she felt numb.
Completely numb.
The front door opened.
Her father took one look at her and immediately knew.
His face fell.
"Ava..."
The tears she had been holding back finally broke free.
She collapsed into his arms.
The pain she'd been suppressing exploded.
Sobs shook her entire body.
Her father held her tightly.
Marcus stood nearby, still furious.
"I swear, if Ethan comes near this house—"
"Marcus."
Their father interrupted gently.
The room fell silent except for Ava's crying.
Minutes passed.
Eventually, she managed to pull herself together.
Only slightly.
Her eyes burned.
Her chest ached.
Everything hurt.
She looked up.
"Dad?"
"Yes?"
"What did I do wrong?"
The question shattered his heart.
She saw it in his eyes.
"You did nothing wrong."
"But he rejected me."
"He made a mistake."
A bitter laugh escaped her.
"A mistake?"
Her voice trembled.
"The entire pack watched him throw me away."
No one replied.
Because there was nothing to say.
Nothing that could undo what had happened.
Ava wiped her tears.
Then she stood.
"Ava?" Marcus asked.
She looked toward the window.
Toward the dark forest beyond the village.
For the first time in her life, Moonclaw Pack didn't feel like home.
Every path.
Every building.
Every face.
Would remind her of tonight.
Of the humiliation.
Of the rejection.
Of Ethan.
Something inside her hardened.
Just a little.
Enough to make a decision.
"I'm leaving."
The room froze.
Marcus blinked.
"What?"
Ava swallowed.
"I can't stay here."
"Ava—"
"I can't."
Her voice cracked.
"But I can't keep seeing them."
Her father stared at her.
Understanding slowly filled his eyes.
The decision had already been made.
Not with words.
But with heartbreak.
And deep down, Ava knew something.
If she stayed...
She would never heal.
So beneath the light of the full moon, the rejected mate made a choice.
She would leave Moonclaw Pack behind.
Even if she had to face the world alone.
And somewhere in the darkness beyond the forest...
Fate was already preparing a path she never saw coming.
