8. At home

Lane awoke with a start. She stared dazed at the posts of the bed trying to remember how she got here. The walls were a sea grass colour and directly infront of her was a painting of ocean waves kissing a sandy beach. In the sky, she noticed, the moon was still included as the sun too over from the night. Bzzzzzzzz. Bzzzzzzzz. Bzzzzzzzz. Before her phone clattered to the floor, Lane answered it, "Hello?" "Hey! Where are you? You didn't come home last night." It was her housemates Tia and Theon. "Oh, I'm fine. The scene was a little out the way so I stayed round my work colleagues instead. They have a spare room." Lane thought she might as well drop hints where she could. She was happy for them and understood this was the next chapter in their lives. She didn't want them to feel guilty. "Oh great," She could already hear the cogs working in that slightly higher pitch of voice from Theon. "Well, are you coming out tonight?" "Yes, wouldn't miss it for the world.Nightclub?" Lane was still intent on getting hammered. She didn't want them to feel guilty but she was allowed to wallow in drink if she chose to at the end of an era. "Of course, there's a new night club I want to go to. I'll ping you the address. See you at ten!" "Sure thing! Bye." With that Lane flopped back down on the bed. It was a comfy bed. A knock at the door roused her once more. "Come in," She called as she sat back up. Damien strode in holding a mug in his hand. At the sight of her hr stopped dead in his tracks. Oh no. Oh no. I must look a mess! Lane's face turned red and realised her shorts had ridden up and she quickly pulled her top down to cover her legs. Absent mindedly she ruffled her hair. Thank goodness for her pixi cut, even if she had bed hair she knew it couldn't be too much of a rats nest but she patted it down any way. Damien was having issues of his own. She was gorgeous, in the bed, and those legs were sexy but not as sexy as the red blush on her cheeks and the way she shyly looked up at him from under her lashes. Remembering he was still in the room gawking he cleared his throat, "Good morning, or almost afternoon. Did you sleep well? I brought coffee." He passed the cup to her eager hands then stepped back rubbing his kneck. " Thank you. I did actually. Best sleep I've had in a while actually." Lane took a sip of the coffee and moaned in satisfaction. Damien turned around to 'look ou the window, but in truth his c**k had responded very quickly to that moan. "So, do you want to get Brunch?" Damien asked. "Yes." Lane's quick and simple reply made Damien turn and smile. Lane was momentarily stunned but his handsome face. "I have organised a change of clothes for you. Please pick something from the bag. Damien went and picked up a shopping bag from the hallway and brought it in. "Um thanks but I can just wear what I had on yesterday.." "It's no problem. A girl Lucy here is a shop o holic and says you can have whatever's in there. She does social media fashion posts or something..." Damien waved his hand in the air to stress his general ignorance of the matter. However, Lane was more interested in why the mere mention of another woman's name on his lips upset her so much. "Okay, well if you insist." There was an awkward pause. " You kinda need to leave for me to change. I'll meet you downstairs." Lane prompted. "Oh yes...see you in a bit." With that Lane was left to process the exchange while she dressed in brand new jeans and a green top. They still had the labels on. Damien made her feel safe but also have butterflies. He also had been a bit temperamental too. She couldn't work him out. Did he like her? Or was he worried she was a freak after last night and she was fragile and needed pity and help? She sighed a long sigh and headed down the stairs to the massive kitchen. It seemed to be the hub of the complex. Damien was sat at the table with Toby and a girl she didn't recognise. "Hey!" The mysterious girl squealed excitedly, "I'm Lucy! You must be Lane. I'm Damiens younger sister." Relief flooded Lane. "Hey, thanks for letting me stay." Lane smilled. "Oh it is no problem. I hear you are moving in soon?" Lucy probed. "Yes, probably after tonight. Going to a night club abd going to hear the wonderful news Tia and Theon are engaged. " Lane grimaced, "But this place is awesome and an upgrade. I have seen the couches here and I've got my eyes on them." "What on earth Lane?" Toby asked. "Oh, sorry that sounded weird. It's just when I'm really tired after a late shift I usually don't make it to my bed and end up crashed on the sofa. Theon usually covers me with a blanket as he gets up first." Damien growled. "Ummm...did you just growl?" Lane asked. "No, that must have been one of our dogs..." Toby said while he discreetly kicked Damien under the table. "You have dogs?" Lane said excitedly. "Oh yes!" Lucy replied. While the girls discussed the three dogs they owned Toby mind linked Damien. Hey, moron, you can't do that possessive crap with Lane. She'll work it out! Toby grumbled. I am your Alpha, you do not get to call me a moron even if you are my Beta. I can't help it. Another man was near my Luna who was sleeping, while she was unguarded and defenseless. How could he let her sleep on a couch? I'd carry her to bed at least. He is obviously a weakling. Damien replied. Toby rolled hid eyes. Look we need to be careful with her. She is very observant. We also need to work out her dream and what kind of magic she holds. I've requested her files so we can learn about her parents. They are in your office to look at later. Now stop being a jealous fool and take her out on your date. Toby smirked. Werewolf hearing was second to none. Damien cleared his throat snd got everyone's attention. "Lane let's go get that Brunch, shall we?" Lane's checks flushed slightly and she nodded. Damien lead her outside to his car. It was an Audi. Not too flashy. He had to look the part of a police chief after all. He drove Lane to a near by restaurant in relative silence. When they pulled up Damien insisted on getting the door and helping her out. With the touch of their hands Damien felt the telltale zap of the electricity between them. The bond was humming through them both and he heard Lane's involuntary gasp and smelt brief arousal. She flushed pink and smelled even more delicious. Damien smiled what he knew to be a lady killing smile and Lane looked dazed for a brief moment before pulling away and averting her gaze. She was shy and Damien couldn't wait to get to know her more. Brunch was ordered and served quickly. Lane was decisive and measured. She seemed like she was used to fending for herself. She ordered an omelette, toast with bacon and a black coffee. Damien ordered a full breakfast. He wanted as much food as possible to make this 'date' last longer. "So when are you going to ask me?" Lane asked. The bluntness threw Damien briefly but he decided he liked the directness. "I thought I said you only have to talk about it if you want when the day was light." Damien replied. He could sense she would not do well with pressure. " It's okay. I must have sounded mad anyway." "Not at all. The human mind is an amazing organ. Have you heard about people who wake up from comas and can speak another language they never learnt?" Damien consoled. "I don't think seeing and speaking to dead people is quite the same as that." "People?" "Huh?" "Well people implies plural which suggests to me that Tyler is not the first?" Damien said this softly as he placed his hand on hers. Lane appreciated the comfort that swept through her. It was warm and genuine. She sighed, "I guess you are not a detective for nothing." Lane continued, " Yes it is plural. They started when I began this job. Well the first job I earned with Toby come to think about it...anyway I saw Mary. She wasn't too bad. I didn't realise she was dead. We had a chat at the bus stop. She asked for directions and she told me her name. Then when I arrived at the crime scene there she was -dead." Lane watched Damiens face but he seemed unphased. She continued, "Then there was Terry. He asked me to give his wife a message about how their son had cancer and then there he was on the slab with Toby over him. He died of natural causes. He was old and his heart gave out. I didn't realise he was a ghost obviously when we were talking outside a flower shop. I thought the request odd as I had no way of telling his wife. I thought he just had dementia or something. Then it became scary..." Lane took a gulp of her coffee as if it were gin and carried on. " There was one before Tyler. The scene we reported to you on in the diner. I thought I'd seen the guy in a night club but had ignored him. I think that must have angered his spirit somehow as his ghost was really creepy or it was because his death was so violent. I don't know but -I threw up...." Lane stopped, "I don't want to say anymore." A tear dropped down her face and she hastily wiped it away. Damien moved and stayed side by side with her , putting his arm around her shoulders and let her cry into his shoulder. He held her tightly, desperate to keep her together. After a few moments, Lane regained herself but Damien refused to move and Lane didn't want him to. The silence was comforting as he made no claims that she was insane and seemed to be genuinely thinking about what she had said. Most importantly he hadn't run away thinking she was insane. Damien was more concerned about the link to Toby. Were her powers activated because she came across a magical being? Did Toby's werewolf trigger her? It would explain why she has no knowledge of their world despite having powers. They may have been laying dormant until she was ready. Her parents had died when she was three and she was raised by an aunt on her mothers side. What if her father was magical? Her mother's side could have been clueless...All this speculation was frustrating. Her closeness to Toby was also getting to him. She was his and he was frustrated he couldn't claim her but he had to be patient or she would run away. "I think that there are some things in this world we can't explain. But you did help people and that is something. How about you tell me about what you are doing tonight?" Damuen fished, "Want me to come...with Toby and Lucy? You can introduce us and we can bring up a spare room and make it every natural?" "That would be great actually," replied Lane. "Great, I'll come pick you up at 10 and we can get our groove on." At this Lane cracked up laughing. They finished their Brunch with the promise of later. Lane took forever to get ready. She tried on several outfits. Tia noticed and wanted the info," So, this guy, is he hot?" "Yes, if you like Greek gods." "Ohhh...and you like him. This is a first. No offense but there is nothing in your wardrobe that will be appropriate. You are a dress for comfort and practicality kind of girl. Here," Tia left and brought back a skin tight, open backed, short red dress and needle point heels." Put these on and I'll do your hair and make up. This guy will not know what hit him. " Satisfied with her work Tia left to meet her later at the club with Theon. She had a short work thing to do still. Theon was picking Tia up later. Lane eyed herself in the mirror and was amazed by Tia's skills. She was glowing and pretty damn sexy. She has managed to tame her hair into this beautiful twisted plait that revealed her neck and somehow made her eyes look bigger and her lips looked far more plump too. What was she thinking anyway? Damien had been nice and the Brunch wasn't a real date. No one that good looking was going to be interested in her. She had been burnt before. However, she had never felt this drawn to someone before. When he was near it was too hard not to give him her full attention. Every time he touched her she was turned on. She eyed the dress again. Feck it. She might as well give it her all. If he wasn't interested she would at least look. Damien rang the doorbell at 10 exactly. It must be a police thing. When she buzzed him up he stopped dead in his tracks when she opened the door and he saw her. His jaw almost hit the floor. Damien had never seen anyone as sexy as Lane. He could see all of her delicious curves in that tight dress and the backless dress made it apparent she wasn't wearing a bra. Her legs were stunning in those heels and so was her pert arse. He wanted to grab her and smash his lips against her plump ones. He wanted to devour her. He felt his d**k getting hard. Thank goodness he was wearing a long jacket to cover just how much he was excited by her. His mouth was open. "Shall we get going?" Lane asked. "Yes..yes, yes let's go..." Damien stammered out and Lane was pleased she affected him in this way. "Where are Toby and Lucy?" Lane asked. "They will meet us there." Damien said as he held open the car door and took the opportunity to touch Lane's bare back. His mere touch made Lane excited. Damien could smell her arousal and was beginning to think he wouldn't survive the car ride there. "Thank you," Lane managed to breathily say. Damien almost blew his load at the sound of that voice. He breathed heavily before going round and getting the car himself. After a few minutes of silence, Lane broke it. She couldn't take the s****l tension on her side and needed to know if Damien was screwing with her. "Damien, was Brunch a date like a romantic date, as in you are interested? And is this a date were you are interested?" Damien slowed the car and parked before he answered. He turned to her and looked squarely into her eyes, "Of course it was. Of course this is. I like you. I'd like to really get to know you, date you, seriously date you. I'm interested. Are you?" Lane was speechless for a few moments and then replied, "Yes. I want you too." With that Damien leaned in slowly his lips almost touching hers, "Then can I claim these as a promise to be my girlfriend? I'm all into monogamy. I don't mess around." Lane didn't think twice. She made up the rest of the distance, scrunching Damiens shirt in her fist as she kissed him gently. However this gentle kiss soon became fierce and passionate. Damien teased her lips open with his toungue and plunged his into hers. At this Lane undid her seat belt and straddled Damiens lap and fisted his hair. Damien pulled her body to his and could feel the thin fabric of her panties pressed against his crouch as her very short dress had ridden up almost exposing her plump arse. He slipped his hand down and squeezed her butt cheek and ground his erect c**k against her enterence. Lane moaned into his mouth. With his other hand he held her neck to kiss her deeper. They kissed and grinded until they had to both come up for air. Lane looked at Damien with wonder and he smiled back. Realising the position they were in, Lane dismounted and turned bright red. "Sorry I just...the answer is yes." Damien broke out into an infectious laugh. Lane laughed too realising the ridiculousness of her statement. "Let's get to this club and maybe later we can continue," Damien said hopefully. Lane nodded with a small smile.
