Chapter 5: Early Attraction

705 Words
The days following Liz’s meeting with Rob passed in a whirlwind of financial data, late-night phone calls, and endless meetings. Liz immersed herself in the investigation, determined to uncover the intricacies of the fraud at King Industries. Every day, she spent hours sifting through records, cross-referencing data, and consulting with Rob’s team. But no matter how much she tried to focus on the task at hand, there was one thing she couldn’t shake: the undeniable attraction she felt for Rob. Every time they met to discuss the case, there was an unspoken tension between them. It was more than just professional; it was something deeper, something electric that neither of them could ignore. The way Rob looked at her, his intense green eyes locking onto hers as if he could see right through her. The way his deep voice seemed to send a shiver down her spine, even when he was simply discussing business. Liz had always been the type to keep her emotions in check, to focus on the work at hand and avoid distractions. But with Rob, it was different. Every time their hands brushed, every time they stood too close, she felt a spark of something she couldn’t ignore. The ranch was calling her back. She hadn’t been there since the BBQ, when everything between them had changed with one brief kiss. The memory of his lips against hers lingered in her mind like a ghost, and she couldn’t push it away no matter how hard she tried. It was an early afternoon when Rob called to ask if they could meet at the ranch again. Liz had been working nonstop, and she was grateful for the break. But as she drove toward the sprawling King family ranch, she couldn’t shake the nerves twisting in her stomach. She had been there a hundred times before, but something felt different now. The anticipation, the tension—it was all building. When she arrived, Rob was already waiting for her on the porch, his tall frame silhouetted against the soft glow of the setting sun. He was a striking figure, his 6'5" frame broad and imposing, but there was something softer about him today. The weight of the investigation, the pressures of running the ranch and the company, seemed to weigh heavily on his shoulders. His tan skin seemed to glow under the sun’s rays, and his black hair tousled slightly in the breeze. “Liz,” he greeted, his deep voice warm as he stepped down to meet her. His eyes, always so intense, softened when they met hers. “I’m glad you could make it.” “I wouldn’t miss it,” Liz replied, her voice steady despite the rush of emotions building inside her. “You said you wanted to go over the findings?” “Yeah,” Rob said, his gaze shifting back toward the barn. “But there’s something else I want to talk to you about. It’s not just the case, Liz. It’s... everything.” Liz’s heart skipped a beat. She had no idea what he meant, but the look in his eyes, the vulnerability there, sent a wave of heat through her. “What do you mean?” she asked, taking a step closer. Rob hesitated, his eyes flicking toward the barn before returning to her. “I don’t want you to think I’m just using you for the investigation. I’m starting to realize... we have something here. Something more than just business.” Liz swallowed hard, her breath catching in her throat. The pull between them was undeniable, but she hadn’t expected him to say it out loud. Her voice was barely above a whisper when she replied, “I feel it too.” Before either of them could say more, Rob reached out, his hand brushing against hers. The simple touch sent a jolt of electricity through Liz’s body. She looked up at him, her blue eyes meeting his green ones, and for a moment, time seemed to stand still. There were no more words, just the silent understanding that their connection had moved past the professional. They were teetering on the edge of something more, and neither of them knew where it would lead.
