The fire burned low, its amber flames flickering against the darkness that surrounded the small clearing.
Aria sat on a fallen log, staring into the dancing flames, but she barely saw them. Her thoughts were tangled in everything Lucien had told her.
The Blessed Luna.
The prophecy.
The silver mark beneath her collarbone.
And the terrifying truth that people she had never met were already searching for her.
None of it felt real.
Only a week ago, her biggest concern had been becoming Luna of the Silver Moon Pack. She had believed her future was simple. She would marry Kieran, help him lead the pack, and someday raise children who would inherit his title.
Now that future had vanished.
In its place stood a stranger with silver eyes and promises she wasn't sure she could trust.
Across the clearing, Lucien stood near the trees, speaking quietly with Rowan and the other Lycan warriors. Even from a distance, his presence commanded respect. No one interrupted him. No one questioned his orders.
He was every bit the king the stories described.
Yet when he looked at her, the hard edges in his expression softened.
It was a contradiction she couldn't understand.
"You haven't eaten."
Aria looked up.
Lucien was standing before her, holding a wooden plate with roasted rabbit, fresh bread, and berries.
"I wasn't hungry."
"Your body disagrees."
Despite herself, a small smile tugged at her lips.
"Is that an order from the king?"
"No." His voice was warm. "It's a request from a man who's worried about you."
The unexpected gentleness caught her off guard.
No one had spoken to her with such care since before the rejection.
She accepted the plate quietly.
"Thank you."
Lucien nodded once before returning to his place by the fire.
He didn't pressure her to talk.
He didn't ask for answers.
He simply waited.
The silence between them felt strangely comfortable.
After finishing the meal, Aria finally broke it.
"Can I ask you something?"
"You can ask me anything."
His answer came so naturally that it made her heart skip.
She looked down at the empty plate resting in her lap.
"If you knew I existed... why didn't you come sooner?"
For the first time since meeting him, Lucien hesitated.
A shadow crossed his face.
"I didn't know where you were."
She frowned.
"You said you've been searching for centuries."
"I have."
"Then how could you not find me?"
Lucien looked toward the moon before answering.
"The prophecy concealed your existence until the moment your first mate bond was broken."
Aria's breath caught.
"So... Kieran's rejection..."
"...awakened the ancient bond between us."
Silence settled over the clearing.
She wasn't sure how to feel.
Part of her wanted to blame Kieran all over again.
Another part wondered if everything had happened for a reason.
The thought frightened her.
Could so much pain truly lead to something greater?
"I don't understand any of this."
"I know."
Lucien's voice remained patient.
"You don't have to understand everything tonight."
His calmness eased the tightness in her chest.
For the first time in days, she didn't feel rushed.
She didn't feel judged.
She simply felt... heard.
Suddenly, Rowan approached.
"My King."
Lucien turned.
"What is it?"
"Our scouts have returned."
The captain's expression was grim.
"They found tracks."
Lucien immediately became alert.
"Whose?"
"Silver Moon warriors."
Aria's heart lurched.
"Kieran?"
Rowan nodded.
"They've crossed the border."
Lucien's jaw tightened.
"They're searching the western forest."
Aria slowly stood.
"He found out I left."
"It appears so."
Her emotions became tangled.
Part of her wanted to believe Kieran had come because he regretted losing her.
Another part knew better.
He had already chosen Selene.
Why chase after someone he had rejected?
As though sensing her thoughts, Lucien spoke quietly.
"If he truly loved you, he would never have humiliated you."
His words weren't cruel.
They were simply honest.
And honesty hurt.
Aria closed her eyes.
She remembered standing in the Moon Temple while the entire pack watched her life fall apart.
She remembered Selene standing proudly beside Kieran.
She remembered the laughter.
The whispers.
The pity.
No.
She couldn't go back.
Not anymore.
"I won't return."
Lucien studied her face carefully.
"Are you certain?"
She nodded.
"There's nothing left for me there."
A faint smile touched his lips.
"Then we'll leave before sunrise."
Before anyone could speak again, a howl echoed through the forest.
It was closer this time.
Much closer.
Rowan immediately reached for his sword.
"The scouts didn't detect anyone nearby."
Lucien's silver eyes narrowed.
"They're hiding their scent."
Another howl answered the first.
Then another.
Three.
Five.
Seven.
The forest suddenly came alive with movement.
Branches snapped.
Leaves rustled violently.
Rowan cursed under his breath.
"We're surrounded."
The Lycan warriors formed a protective circle around Aria without waiting for orders.
Lucien stepped to the front.
His expression became unreadable.
Cold.
Deadly.
The predator had returned.
Figures slowly emerged from the darkness.
They wore black cloaks instead of armor, their faces hidden beneath deep hoods.
Each carried a curved blade.
Their leader stepped forward.
"We're not here to fight, Lycan King."
Lucien's voice was icy.
"Then you've made a mistake by surrounding us."
The cloaked man ignored the warning.
His gaze settled on Aria.
"So..."
A cruel smile appeared beneath his hood.
"The Blessed Luna has finally awakened."
Aria felt the silver mark beneath her collarbone burn.
Not painfully.
Like a warning.
The stranger took another step.
"Hand her over."
Lucien didn't move.
Instead, an overwhelming wave of power swept through the clearing.
The ground trembled.
The trees bent as though caught in a violent storm.
Even the cloaked warriors instinctively stepped backward.
When Lucien spoke again, his voice carried the authority of an immortal king.
"You dare demand what is under my protection?"
His silver eyes blazed like molten metal.
The stranger's smile disappeared.
For the first time, uncertainty crossed his face.
Lucien slowly drew the sword strapped across his back.
Its silver blade glowed beneath the moonlight.
"I warned you once."
The wind howled through the forest.
Every Lycan warrior unsheathed his weapon.
The cloaked figures did the same.
War hung in the air.
Lucien never looked away from the enemy leader.
His next words were calm.
But terrifying.
"Now... face the consequences."
