Chapter 2 The Best Choice

602 Words
She picked up the divorce agreement from the floor and signed her name in a few quick strokes. The whole thing happened so fast that everyone was left stunned. The people in the private room stared at one another in shock. Was the divorce really going to happen that easily? "Tanner, I've signed the agreement. I'll move out of the villa as soon as possible." With those words, she turned and walked out without looking back. The door closed, and the room erupted in whispers. "What's Yvonne playing at?" "She's just playing hard to get. There's no way she'd actually leave Tanner. She's been doing this for years—we're all tired of the act." "Fair enough. I bet she'll come crawling back to win him over within a week." "It won't take that long." Tanner smiled, cold and certain. "I bet she'll be back crying to me to take back the divorce papers in three days. But this time, I won't give her an inch." One of his friends said, "Damn, Tanner, you really know how to handle things. How'd you get her wrapped around your finger like that?" Laughter swelled in the private room, growing louder and louder. ***** Yvonne took a taxi home. She stepped into the villa and headed straight for the bedroom on the second floor, pulling a metal tin box out of the desk drawer. The box looked like it had been around for ages. She opened it. Inside was an old black-and-white photo of her grandfather, Quentin Mason, and his comrade-in-arms, Shane Thorne. A string of phone numbers was scrawled on the back of the photo. Yvonne dialed the number. "Hello?" A familiar, deep voice came from the other end of the line. Tears pricked at Yvonne's eyes instantly. "Shane, it's Yvonne. Quentin's granddaughter... Do you remember me?" Shane said, "Oh, it's Yvonne! My dear, of course I remember you. I'm so glad you called." "Shane, you once told me I could inherit my grandfather's police badge anytime I wanted. Is that still an offer?" Yvonne asked. Shane answered, "Absolutely it is, kid. Are you sure you want to go through with this?" "Yeah, I've made up my mind," Yvonne said into the phone, her voice steady with resolve. "Shane, give me a month. I'll wrap up everything in Jaelis City and come to Yora City to see you." "All right, I'll be waiting for you, kid," said Shane. After hanging up, Yvonne stared at the wedding photo on the wall, lost in thought. Five years ago, Tanner's grandfather, Marcus Cooper, had passed away from illness, and the lawyer, Vance Palmer, read his will. The will clearly stated that Tanner, the eldest direct grandson, would inherit the entire Cooper family estate. But there was a catch: he had to marry Yvonne. If he didn't, he would automatically forfeit his inheritance. That was why Tanner married her. Over five years of marriage, Tanner's attitude had shifted—from being polite at first to not even bothering to hide his affair with Noelle anymore. Yvonne had stayed by his side through it all. Everyone thought she was head over heels in love with Tanner. Only she knew the truth: she was only keeping her promise to Marcus. She had promised at Marcus' bedside that she wouldn't leave him unless Tanner asked for a divorce—three times in a row. Now that the condition had been met, she was finally free. Yvonne murmured to the photo, "Marcus, I did everything I could, but I still couldn't make Tanner love me. Maybe divorce really is the best choice."
