Yvonne blinked and stared at the familiar ceiling, stunned.
In such a short time, this was the second time she had ended up in the hospital.
She had wanted to spend her last month in Jaelis City in peace. Yet even that simple wish felt out of reach.
The hospital room door opened, and a nurse stepped inside.
The nurse rolled her eyes as she changed Yvonne's dressing, handling her roughly and making Yvonne wince in pain. "Could you be gentler? My hand is injured."
"I'm not a man. Don't act innocent with me," the nurse shot back.
Yvonne was left speechless, anger rising.
The nurse gave her a scornful look. "How shameless. You're divorced and still trying to hide a pregnancy, thinking a baby will win him back?"
Yvonne's body went rigid, stunned by the words. "What are you talking about?"
"Did you hear that? Happy now? Don't get too excited. I heard Mr. Cooper tell Ms. Hayes he won't let that illegitimate baby of yours be born." The nurse then turned and left, leaving Yvonne frozen in shock.
'Pregnant? That's impossible.'
No one knew her body better than she did.
She had just had her period—there was no way she could be pregnant. The hospital must have made a mistake.
Yvonne jumped out of bed and rushed to find the doctor.
Warren Fox handed her a test report with a firm expression. "Ms. Mason, you are indeed pregnant. Here is your report."
Yvonne glanced at it and tossed it aside. "That's impossible. There must be a mix-up. Did you switch my results with someone else's?"
Warren sighed. "Ms. Mason, the hospital doesn't make mistakes. Stop making a scene."
"I'm getting a second opinion at another hospital." Yvonne turned to leave.
Warren ordered the nurses to stop her. "Ms. Mason, you can't leave. Mr. Cooper has decided you will take abortion pills. You are not allowed to leave the hospital until after the procedure."
Yvonne froze. "I'm not even pregnant. Why would I need abortion pills?"
"It's Mr. Cooper's orders, Ms. Mason. Please cooperate." Warren avoided her gaze.
A chill settled over Yvonne, and a bad feeling crept in.
"All right, I'll cooperate. I never wanted this baby anyway." Her tone softened suddenly. "I'm tired. I'm going back to my room to rest."
She turned to leave, but Warren instructed two nurses to follow her.
Yvonne frowned, her back to them.
Warren's nervous, guilty expression confirmed her suspicions.
She left the office and stepped into the hallway. Clutching her stomach, she said quickly, "I have a stomachache. I need to use the restroom."
One of the nurses said, "There's a bathroom in your room."
"I can't hold it. I'll just use this one here. You don't need to wait for me." Yvonne hurried into the nearby restroom.
The two nurses stood there for a moment, exchanging confused looks, then left.
Once they were gone, Yvonne stepped out from behind the restroom door.
She made her way back to Warren's office.
The door was ajar, and Warren was on the phone. "Yvonne is suspicious, but I've convinced her. She now believes she's pregnant."
He nodded. "Ms. Hayes, don't worry. We'll replace the abortion pills with sterilization drugs. Once she takes them, she'll never be able to have children again. Even if Mr. Cooper still has feelings for her, she won't be a threat anymore."
Warren paused, then added, "Mr. Cooper will never find out. If he learns she can't have children, we can say it was damage from the abortion. Ms. Hayes, I've taken care of your problem. Now, about the two million dollars you promised me..."
A cold dread settled over Yvonne.
She had been right—this entire thing was a setup.
She had signed the divorce papers and would be leaving in three days. Yet Noelle still wouldn't let her go.
