Chapter 10 Making Her Stronger

707 Words
Yvonne struggled the entire time. They restrained her, grabbed her chin, and forced her head back, shoving the pills and water down her throat. Water dripped down her chin as she coughed violently, gasping for air. At last, they let her go. She bent over the bed, retching, trying to spit the pills out. But the drugs had already taken effect. A searing pain tore through her lower abdomen. Blood streamed out steadily, soaking the sheets, and she collapsed into the spreading pool of red. Outside the hospital room door, Tanner watched through the glass. His hands clenched tightly at his sides. "Is it supposed to hurt this much? Is this medication even safe?" Noelle smiled. "Of course it's safe, Tanner. Don't you trust Warren? He's a top ob-gyn. Yvonne is just being a coward. Plenty of women take these pills every day—no one else has a problem." Tanner didn't answer. He just stared into the room without blinking. 'Is Yvonne really just afraid of pain? Earlier, her hand was badly injured, yet she kept cooking for three hours without complaining.' Yet now her face was as pale as paper, twisted in agony—far beyond what anyone could endure. Tanner couldn't bear to watch any longer. He turned to leave, then stopped after a few steps. "Noelle, I'll divorce Yvonne. I'll only have children with you for the rest of my life. But... this child is my debt to her. If she ever needs help in the future, I'll still help her. You're kind—you'll understand, won't you?" "I..." Noelle gritted her teeth, unwilling to agree. He was clearly feeling guilty toward Yvonne. Guilt was a dangerous emotion for a man. He might forget the woman he once loved, but he would never forget the one he felt guilty toward. Over the years, that was exactly how she had manipulated him—using his guilt to make him dote on her. A warning bell rang in Noelle's mind, but she forced a generous smile onto her face. "I understand, Tanner. I won't stop you from taking care of her." "Good." Tanner left without another word. Noelle stood there, seething. She had schemed and plotted everything, only to let Yvonne win Tanner's sympathy. 'How infuriating. At least Yvonne can never have children again. Otherwise, she'd be a serious threat.' Noelle silently praised her own foresight. ***** Inside the room, after Warren and the nurses left, Yvonne slipped into a coma. She woke up three days later, staring blankly at the ceiling. The sharp pain in her abdomen reminded her that everything that night had been real. She had truly been forced to take the sterilization pills—she would never be able to have children again. Heat pricked at Yvonne's eyes, and she almost cried, but held the tears back. She would not forget her promise to Shane. She was going to be a police officer. She needed a stronger heart—she couldn't break down so easily. Her phone buzzed twice with a flight alert. Her departure was in three hours. Yvonne endured the pain, forcing herself to sit up and change clothes. Every movement sent a knife-like pain through her lower body, and sweat beaded on her forehead. Thirty minutes later, she was dressed and picked up her bag. She ran into a few nurses in the hallway. Their expressions were hostile. "Yvonne, where do you think you're going?" one of them asked. Yvonne sneered. "I took the medicine. Tanner didn't tell you to keep me locked up, did he?" The nurses fell silent, stunned by her response. Yvonne ignored them and stepped into the elevator. She went down to the lobby, where her ride had already arrived. The driver helped load her luggage into the trunk, and she got in. Before the car pulled away, she glanced out the window one last time at the familiar city. She would never come back. The life of a special police officer was unstable and full of danger. But it was her calling for the rest of her life. 'Goodbye, Jaelis City. Goodbye, all these painful memories.' Every hardship was a lesson, making her stronger. From now on, she would be Yvonne—unbreakable.
