CHAPTER 8: SHE SMILE WITH A BROKEN HEART

1809 Words
INT. PRIVATE CHAPEL - MORNING - FLORIDA Sunlight through stained glass painting the white marble blue and amber. White lilies so tall you could hide behind them. Palm trees swaying outside the open doors, heat shimmering off the courtyard. Small. Private. Beautiful. Exactly as planned. Like a dollhouse wedding. Like the vision board she made when she was fourteen. Row 1: Thomas Hartley — proud, standing tall, eyes already wet before she's even walked in. Her mom clutching his arm, clutching a tissue. Her brother filming, his hand shaking so badly the camera jerks. A seat saved for Thomas, now taken. Row 2: Liam Smith with Lila Smith — flower girl in her little crown, swinging her legs, bored, kicking the pew in front of her. Sam and Jonathan — Sam glowing, one hand on her bump, the other tight around Jonathan's. Jonathan quiet, watching everything with a jaw so tight it could crack. At the altar: JASON waits. Dark suit. White shirt. No tie — open collar, just how she likes it. Calm. The perfect groom. But his hands shake. Just a little. Down by his sides. He keeps trying to still them, pressing his thumb into his palm, and he can't. Right next to him - DAVID. Best man. Jason's best friend. Full of life. Tie already a bit crooked, hair messy like he ran here. David sees the shake. Leans in, whispers just for Jason, grinning, trying to break it: DAVID "Mate, breathe. You're shaking like you're about to face a firing squad. It's just my sister you're marrying." Jason doesn't smile. He can't. His eyes are locked on the closed doors at the back. DAVID (softer) "She's going to come." The music changes. Doors open. ROSE walks down the aisle. Ivory lace. Veil floating behind her like fog. She looks breathtaking. The kind of beautiful that makes people forget to breathe. Perfect smile. Dead eyes. Thomas steps forward. He takes her hands. His voice is a broken whisper only she can hear. THOMAS "You look beautiful, your mum and I are so happy. I love you, baby girl." He places her hand in Jason's - sits in Row 1 with her mom. Rose's hand in Jason's - warm, shaking. His fingers close around hers too tight. Like if he lets go she'll vanish. David mouths the words "you look beautiful" to Rose and steps back half a step, giving them space. Inside Rose: _Don't cry. If you cry the mascara will run and they'll have it on camera forever. Don't cry. You wanted this since you were fourteen. Remember? This dress. This chapel. You dreamed of this. You had it taped to your bedroom wall. So why can't you breathe? Why does his hand feel like a handcuff?_ Inside Jason: _You came. You walked. You didn't run. Thank God you didn't run. For a second when the doors opened I thought you wouldn't. I thought the chair would stay empty._ Vows are spoken. Traditional. Beautiful. Meaningless. Words that belong to other people. For better, for worse. In sickness and in health. She says them clear. He says them like a vow and a threat at once. "You may kiss the bride!" The guests cheer. Someone claps too loud. Lila drops her flower basket. Jason lifts her veil. Slowly. Like he's unveiling something fragile that might break. For a heartbeat he just looks at her — and his perfect calm face cracks right down the middle. His eyes are wet. Truly wet. This is not performance. Then he leans in. It's not the soft, dream kiss she'd imagined since she was fourteen, practicing on her pillow, whispering his name. It's firm. Possessive. His hand slides up to her jaw — not gentle — claiming her, tilting her face up to his mouth in front of God and her family and Sam. Erasing everything she thought she knew about what his mouth felt like. It tastes like goodbye and _mine_. JASON INTERNAL: _You're mine Rose truly mine. Finally. After all these years. Finally._ Inside Rose: _This isn't love. Oh God, this isn't love. This is ownership. He's sealing it in front of them so I can never take it back. He's showing them I'm his so no one can save me later._ Her eyes fill before she can stop them. One tear slips. Then another. Hot on her cheeks under the lace. Lila — small voice from the front row, clear as a bell, because kids always say what adults are too polite to say — LILA "Auntie Rose? Why are you crying?" Silence. The quartet stops mid-note. Every smile freezes. Sam's hand flies to her mouth. Liam leans down, kisses Lila's head, voice too loud, too bright: LIAM "She is happy, sweetheart, that's why. Happy tears." Everyone smiles and nods. Too quickly. Too hard. The rest of the day blurs. Toasts where she tastes salt because she's bitten her lip so hard it bleeds. Photos where his hand never leaves her lower back, fingers digging in, holding her up because her knees might give. First dance where she stares over his shoulder at the exit. Smiles that hurt so much her face aches. Congratulations that feel like knives because every "I'm so happy for you!" is a lie she has to nod to. She smiled with a broken heart. And everyone called it beautiful. Cold leather. White roses on the table. The plane hums, already taxiing. Rose sinks into the seat, dress spilling everywhere. She looks out the window as the city shrinks away. Inside Rose: I’m still in the dress I dreamed of marrying him in. And I’m leaving everyone I love. For a private island where no one can hear me say no. JASON — across from her, voice low — “You can sleep. 5 hours.” ROSE — “And then?” JASON — meets her eyes — “And then we land. And we’re alone.” Engines roar. The plane lifts. The world falls away. EXT. PRIVATE AIRSTRIP — DUSK The plane door swings open. Salt-kissed wind rushes in. Palm trees bow in the breeze. Beyond the white sand sits one villa, glowing warm against the darkening blue. No neighbours. No road out. Nowhere to run. JASON HARTLEY steps down first, turns back, offers his hand. JASON: "Welcome to my hell." He says it like a dark little joke. It isn't. ROSE LEVING takes his hand. Heels sinking into soft sand. Ivory dress trailing. She is still wearing her wedding gown. And it already feels like mourning clothes. Staff meet them in silence. Bags are taken. Doors opened. No pleasantries. No smiles. Just efficient, quiet service. No witnesses. INT. VILLA — LIVING ROOM — NIGHT Floor-to-ceiling glass looking out over the ocean. The tide rolls in slow and endless. The room is beautiful — sleek, warm, perfectly private. But there's no warmth between them. On the centre table, right where it can't be missed: the agreement folder. Thick. Sealed. Impossible to miss. Rose stops. The air leaves her lungs. ROSE: "You brought it here." Jason ignores what she said and continues to just look at her, and then gives a smile. JASON: "You looked beautiful today. Truly. But you also looked like you were attending a funeral." ROSE: — voice breaking, sharp and bright and raw — "BECAUSE I WAS! I married you under blackmail, Jason. What did you expect? Confetti? Bells?" JASON: — steps closer, voice low, unflinching — "Why didn't you tell the family to help you get out of this mess? Why say yes to me, hmm? Because you knew this would be the only way this keeps closed!" ROSE: — chest heaving, tears spilling now, unashamed — "Because my best friend is four months pregnant and high-risk! Because if those contracts collapse, she loses her business, her home — everything we built! Maybe even her baby! Because YOU are the only one who can fix it — and YOU told me the price tag!" JASON: — voice steady, earnest now — "And this place has always been my safe haven. I thought it would be best to keep out of media and paparazzi. I wanted privacy. Just us. To talk." ROSE: — gives a sharp, bitter laugh — "Yes — and beside paparazzi... you mean without Sam here to tell you you're wrong. Without anyone to see what you actually are." JASON: — louder now, frustration breaking through — "What does any of that matter now — here and now! I'm NOT wrong, Rose! And I'm doing this to PROTECT Sam and you!" JASON: — quieter, firm, as he points at the files — "Everything we're doing — this is why. Every smile, every hand held, every word spoken — it's all to keep this closed." ROSE: — sharp, stepping back — "Protect us? Or control us? Is this where you blackmail me some more?" JASON: — voice rising, raw and urgent — "I mean to FIX this. Before it blows up. Before you and Sam lose everything, and maybe the baby from the shock. Yes, dammit! Before EVERYTHING you care about burns down." ROSE: — laughs, sharp and hollow — “Yeah, right! Whatever, Jason. You keep telling yourself that. It was never about saving the people I care about. It was about you not seeing my truth. That’s all it ever was. Stop it, Jason. You don’t see past your own past!” She holds back the tears burning hot at the back of her eyes, voice trembling but steady. “Not every woman is your mother. Not every person is lying to get something from you.” He winces — sharp, like she’s struck him. JASON: “Don’t.” ROSE: — steps closer, heart laid bare — “Don’t what? Don’t tell the truth? Don’t tell you that… can’t you see that I’ve loved you since I was sixteen? That I waited for you? That THIS is the worst day of my life because the man I love looks at me and sees a liar — a cheater?” Something flickers in Jason’s face. A crack. A breath he forgets to take. Doubt — real, raw, unsteady — just for a heartbeat. Then he shuts it down. Hard. ROSE: — voice breaking, reaching — “If you’d just LISTENED — if you’d just ASKED me —” JASON: — cuts in, tight and burning — “I’ve asked! I’ve watched! For WEEKS, Rose! And every single thing I see —” ROSE: — cries out, desperate now — “WHAT?! What did you see? TELL ME! Why won’t you just BELIEVE ME?!” He grabs the folder — knuckles white with rage — slams a paper down flat on the table between them. JASON: — cold, sharp, final — “Sign the post-nup.”
