1079 Words
INT. JASON'S HOTEL ROOM — 3 DAYS LATER Jason's desk was covered in files. Top page: JONATHAN KINGSLEY FILE: - Husband: Samantha Kingsley — Rose’s best friend - Role: Operations lead — equal partner alongside Rose and Sam. All three own the business equally. - Flags: "Asia suppliers — unverified sourcing", "off-book shipments", "under review" The private investigator’s report sits beneath it, thick and detailed. Jason reads it again, every word sinking in: Jonathan Kingsley was unaware the company they invested with was fraudulent. He did not know — not until it was too late. He is in way over his head. He borrowed against the business, against the new building they had just signed with him a few weeks back, against everything they own — trying to fix it before anyone found out. He is on the brink of losing it all. Every dollar. Every investment. Everything Rose and Sam have worked for years. He is desperate. And he is terrified they will find out. Jason closes the file slowly. He knows the truth now. Jonathan isn’t a bad guy, not in this case anyway — he’s a man who made a catastrophic mistake and is drowning trying to fix it. And Rose? She has no idea. Neither does Sam. They are both walking toward the edge of losing everything they worked so hard for and they don’t even know it. Jason sits back, staring at the wall. It doesn’t make what he thinks he saw any less painful. It doesn’t stop the jealousy, the doubt, the fear. But it adds something else — sadness. A terrible, heavy sadness that he’s the only one who knows. That he has to carry it alone. And still — he says nothing. He doesn’t tell them. Not yet. INT. SAM & JONATHAN'S APARTMENT — FRIDAY NIGHT — DINNER Warm lights. The table is set. Candles. Sam’s cooking fills the air. It feels like family. Rose is already there, Sam finished asking the staff to prepare the table the for dinner. The doorbell rings. ROSE — takes her hands her, grinning for ear to ear — “That’s him!” She opens the door. Jason stands there. Hands in his pockets, easy smile. But his eyes are tired. Heavy. ROSE — “Hey. Come in.” He steps inside. And there, across the room, is Jonathan. He freezes for half a second. Recognition hits him. JONATHAN — stepping forward with a smile, stretching out for a handshake — “Hi, nice to meet you man Rose has told us so much about you."Jonathan frowned slightly.Umm hay I know you right. We met in the elevator. The other night? 10th floor You held the door for me. Right?” Sam and Rose both look over. Jason’s heart sinks — of course he remembers. But his face shows nothing. He gives a small, polite smile — completely blank. Like he’s hearing it for the first time. JASON — shakes his head gently — “I don’t think so. Must have been someone else. You must be mistaken.” i am around quite a bit, buying selling building maybe you seen me around." Jonathan blinks. Tilts his head. Was it him? It looked exactly like him. But Jason’s face says nothing. No recognition. No flicker. Nothing. JONATHAN — laughing it off, shaking his head — “Ah… yeah. Maybe. Sorry. You just… looked familiar.” JASON — easy, unbothered — “No problem.” Rose watches them both, confused for a second, then shrugs it off. Sam grins. the private chef comes in to tell them dinner was ready SAM — “Alright — enough standing around! Food’s on! Everyone sit!” They take their seats. Jason across from Jonathan. Rose next to Sam. Four people. One happy dinner. And Jason knows everything. Jonathan knows he’s in trouble. Rose and Sam know absolutely nothing. Throughout dinner, Jason is perfect. Charming. Asks about the business. Asks about the business expansion plans. Laughs at the right jokes. But every time Jason looks at Jonathan he looks like a man on edge holding on desperately — there’s something there. A quiet. Jason sees right through him. Jonathan shifts in his seat. Uncomfortable. He keeps glancing at Jason. And Jason just smiles. Like nothing is wrong. ROSE — “So — how’s everything going with the Asia shipments? All sorted?” Jonathan freezes. His fork stops halfway to his mouth. Before he can answer — Jason speaks, smooth and easy. JASON — “ Wow this didn't take long to turn into a business meeting." Jason said in amusingly as he come to Jonathan rescue." I’m sure it’s all under control. These things take time, don’t they? lets have dinner and not talk about work.” He looks straight at Jonathan when he says it. And Jonathan — pale, relieved, terrified all at once — nods quickly. JONATHAN — “Yeah. Exactly. Just… taking longer than expected. But it’s — it’s all fine.” Jason takes a sip of his wine. His eyes never leave Jonathan’s. It’s not fine. And you know it. And I know it. And soon — they will too. INT. JASON'S CAR — LATER THAT NIGHT He drives away from their building. The streets are quiet, but his head is loud. He knows. Jonathan knows he knows. Rose and Sam — they have no idea. None of them know how close it all is to breaking. Jason grips the wheel until his knuckles ache. It shouldn’t be like this. He shouldn’t be the one holding all of it. Keeping it locked inside. Watching them smile over dinner while everything they love is already slipping away. He thinks of Rose — laughing, bright, so completely unaware — and his chest aches. Why didn’t you tell me? Why did it have to be this way? It feels like betrayal. But it also feels like he’s betraying her right back. Hiding the truth. Waiting instead of helping. Choosing to hold it over her head. I should have said something. I should have told them. But I can’t. Not yet. He drives slow and heavy. No victory. No satisfaction. Just a terrible, quiet sadness settling deep in his bones. And the certainty that soon — very soon — he’s going to have to hurt the one person he never wanted to hurt. JASON — barely a whisper into the dark — “God help us. What am I doing?”
