Chapter TwoNick was woken from a deep slumber by a sharp pain in his left arm. He heard himself emit a half-hearted “owww” in recognition of the burning sensation that lingered. With some reluctance, he forced his eyes open, and found himself facing the digital clock radio that sat on the small table at the side of the bed he shared with Justine. Familiar territory at least, even if his head was reeling from persistent internal hammer blows. A fleeting thought: oh God, why do we do it? He was lying on his right side, facing out of the side of the bed, and he suddenly realised that his upper body was feeling distinctly chillier than his legs and feet. The duvet that should have covered his arms and shoulders had disappeared, or perhaps it had been pinched; it was certainly elsewhere anyway
