The thoughts and feelings that he was experiencing now about a different woman seemed to magnify these emotions, distorting them out of all proportion. Every morning since the night he and Kay had gone drinking in the City, Nick had woken to find that he had a new constant companion – a colossal edifice of sheer care about the well-being of another person, over whom he had no control and very little contact. It was thrilling and frightening. Nick felt puny alongside these feelings, and helpless against their persistence.
