It was always like this: after the panic and the paralysis that she had experienced on the train, came contempt for the people and things that should have been important, herself included. It was strangely reassuring to know that the same pattern she had come to expect was still repeating itself. Another lift of the glass to her lips and then it was empty. She ordered another, and five minutes later a third. The butterflies still hadn’t dissipated though. With ten minutes to go before the train was due to depart, Kay ordered a fourth drink, hoping this one would prove to be the elixir that would help her to relax and be able to tackle this TV crew at Gatwick. “Here, let me get you that,” she heard an American voice over her right shoulder say.
