Elena's POV “That's enough, Adrian. ”“You don't tell me what to do! This b***h interrupted my f*****g fun!” Adrian growled in anger, his grip tightening on my hair even more and I winced in pain. “She didn't mean to. Let her go. Don't make me f*****g say it again.” The handsome stranger said, his hand still holding Adrian's wrist but Adrian obviously didn't like being ordered around. “Or what, Jake? What are you gonna do? You're just an adopted bastard, you have no say over whatever the f**k I wanna do—Ahh, let me go!!” He cried out in pain as his hand left my hair and I let out a sigh of relief, my scalp burning from how hard he pulled my damn hair. “You should have listened to me when I told you to let her go,” Jake muttered, his hand bent slightly as he twisted Adrian's wrist and I just stood there, watching in shock while Adrian cried out in pain. I should do something. Maybe say something to stop them but the asshole deserved it. And I was pleased to see him in so much pain. But I had to speak up, I didn't want to be on anyone's bad side. At least not yet. “E-excuse me.” I stuttered, putting on my pitiful face as I spoke softly. “Mr Von Freuler asked me to clean his son's room, who was returning today, and I still haven't found it. That's why I accidentally interrupted you, Mr Adrian. I'm really sorry for crossing my boundaries.” I apologized, bowing slightly so that they could think I was really sorry for my actions. Jake finally let go of Adrian, who hissed in pain, shot me a glare, and then disappeared back into his room. That told me all I needed to know; he wasn't the one Maximilian told me about. It was Jake. “You're new, I'm guessing,” Jake spoke, his deep voice resonating through me and I fought the urge to shudder at how pleasant he sounded. “My apologies for the inconvenience. My name is Elena and yes, I only resumed today.” I replied softly, and his eyes moved from my head down to my feet and back to my eyes again, causing me to feel self-conscious. “Call me Jake.” He replied and started to walk away while I stood there, staring at him with wide eyes. From what I heard Adrian say earlier, he seemed to be adopted. My father could afford to adopt a kid but didn't hesitate to abandon me when he had the chance. How classic. “Are you gonna clean my room or what? What are you standing there, zoning out for?” He asked as he opened the door to a room that I assumed was his and I hurriedly followed behind him. The moment he closed the door, he grabbed my hand and pinned me by the door, his eyes narrowed at me. A soft yelp escaped my lips, and the distance between us was so small that if I tiptoed just a bit, our lips would touch. What the hell was going on? “Who are you?” He asked, staring at me like I was a suspicious criminal and I froze, wondering if he knew something about who I was. “I'm Elena, the new maid. Is there a problem—” “What's your purpose here?” He interrupted me, his right hand by the side of my head while his other hand grabbed my hand tightly. My heart threatened to fly out of my chest with how fast it was beating. I hated that I couldn't ignore how good he smelled. It took every ounce of energy in my body not to lean in and snuggle my face in the crook of his neck. Also, the way he stared at me like he hated my presence here told me one thing. He knew something but I had to keep my guard up. “My purpose is to earn money while working so that I can take care of my sister and myself. Can you please step back? You're hurting me—”“ You came here to steal from my father, right? Tell me!” He growled and I lost it at that moment. I didn't care about his stupid father's wealth. I only came here to get my revenge and if I had to take my anger out on him first, then so be it. In anger, I stepped on his foot and he pulled back instantly, wincing in pain as he hopped on one foot, holding his leg with his hands. I fought the urge to laugh; he looked like he was in so much pain, but I found it funny. That's what he got for messing with me. “I told you, I'm here to work. I don't care about your stupid wealth, what am I gonna steal from you? The audacity to accuse me of what I never even thought of!” I spat in annoyance and he stared at me in shock, his expression twisted with pain. “How dare you—” “What? Are you gonna fire me? Go ahead! Misuse your power and send me away! And now that you've spoken about it, maybe I'll just steal from your father after all! You jerk!” I blurted out in a rush and he just stared at me, dumbfounded. My eyes widened when I realized what I had just said and I slapped my hand over my mouth in horror. I should learn to tape my mouth shut whenever I was angry, I always ended up saying s**t that I never meant. After a moment of awkward silence, he cleared his throat and straightened his shirt while I kept my eyes on my shoes. I couldn't face him, what if he truly fired me because I had blurted that out by accident? “Clean the room before I get back.” He muttered coldly and walked out of the room while I just stared at his back, unable to form an apology. The door slammed shut behind him and I winced, realizing that I might have lost this job as soon as I got it. “Way to go, Elena,” I muttered to myself in annoyance and groaned, wanting nothing but to slam my head against the door. But it wasn't entirely my fault, he had provoked me first. I got to work anyway, cleaning the room and making sure that it was beyond spotless. Anything to make sure he didn't remember how I had lashed out at him earlier. When I was sure that I was done, I moved to leave when I spotted a picture sitting on the table stand beside his bed. Picking it up, I saw it was a picture of Jake with a girl I've never seen before. They looked happy together. Could that be his girlfriend? And why the hell did I care? I slammed the photo back to where it belonged and walked out of the room. The moment I turned a corner, I yelped in shock when I saw Cecilia standing there, like she had been waiting for me. “I want dinner served in the next twenty minutes. If it's useless, you'll cook it again. And again until you get it right.” She said snarkily, her eyes staring at me as if they could read through my soul, but I kept a smile on my face and nodded. I headed for the kitchen, sucking in a sharp breath as I started with what I knew to do best. Pasta. I worked like no one was watching, slicing and dicing vegetables. By the time I was done, the whole kitchen smelled amazing. I would like to see Cecilia try to call my food useless or trash. Twenty minutes later, I realized that I had underestimated her too much. The glass pot of pasta crashed to the ground, a disgusted look on her face as she stared at me like I had just tried to kill her. “Nobody eats that food! Did you come to this house to kill us? How could you serve us this trash?” She yelled, and I tried to understand how that delicious-tasting pasta was trash. “I'm sorry, ma'am, I don't understand—”“ Do you realize how much salt is in this food? You stupid thing!” She yelled even louder, and Adrian, who had just come to the dining table, snorted in amusement. “I'm not surprised, she looks so useless.” He muttered and my hands clenched into fists as I stared at the food I had spent hours making, all on the ground. “But it tasted perfect when I cooked it—”“ How dare you argue with me?” She snapped, raising her hand to slap me and I flinched. But someone's voice stopped her and her hand hung in the air as Jake stepped to my side. “Put your hand down, Cecilia.” He said cooly, shielding me from her and she looked at him with fear as her hand slowly returned to her side. She was scared of him? And why was he protecting me?
