Echoes Of Laughter

2116 Words
She watched as laughter flowed freely between Clara and Chris. Seeing them so blissfully in love filled her heart with joy and reminded her of the relationship she had with Evans. “You said you'd come on time! I doubted you for a moment,” Clara teased playfully. Chris smiled and pulled her into a tight hug. “Come on, for you, I would have come three hours earlier,” he replied, eliciting a laugh from her. Clara blushed and playfully swatted at his arms. Ella found herself smiling at them, her heart swelling with happiness for her best friend. They both found love, and Ella couldn't imagine her life without it. So caught up in the couple in front of her, she missed the look in Evan’s eyes. He gently pulled away and gazed into her eyes softly. “You don't regret anything, do you?” His voice was quiet yet gentle. “No, I don't. I'm exactly where I should be,” she said, her voice brimming with certainty. Evan smiled, satisfaction evident in his gaze. “Great.” He kissed her forehead, his breath warm against her skin. Chris gently pulled away from Clara and turned to his brother just as Ella stepped back from Evan. “Hello, koala,” Chris said, teasingly opening his arms wide. Ella grinned and returned the gesture. “Hey, Spongebob!” They both smiled, and Ella rushed forward to hug him. Chris seized the moment, lifted her off the ground, and twirled her in the air. Her giggles filled the room, and the soft golden glow of the chandelier enveloped them in warmth. “Put me down!” she mumbled, kicking her feet in the air. “I told you to stop doing this!” He laughed and gently set her down. Chris smirked as she looked up at him with a pout. “You’re just short,” he teased, demonstrating their height difference with his palm. She swatted his hand away and rolled her eyes, prompting him to coo while gently tugging at her cheeks. Not one to back down, Ella reached up and pulled his cheeks in return. “Little monkey looks cute when she’s angry,” he grimaced as she pulled his cheeks harder. “And you, Spongebob, look annoying when you smile at me like that. When will the two of you grow up?” Bianca intervened, a playful glint in her eyes as she pulled both of their ears. “May I ask why you’re pestering my soon-to-be daughter-in-law?” she gently scolded her son, who looked at her with a sense of betrayal. “Aren't you supposed to be on my side? And by the way, she pulled my cheeks first!” He raised his hands in mock defense. “Oh please, everyone saw you tugging at my cheeks first,” Ella shot back, still trapped in the grip of the Queen. She took a deep breath and pretended to wipe away a tear. “He even made fun of my height by lifting me off the floor!” Chris gaped at his brother for help, but Evans just raised his hands, indicating that he was uninvolved. Smiling at Clara, he helplessly asked for assistance, but she only made matters worse. “I can be a witness to that,” Clara said, raising her hands to demonstrate. Feeling betrayed by his allies, Chris had no choice but to stand obediently in the middle of the ballroom. “Now apologize,” Bianca commanded, crossing her arms and tapping her foot on the floor. “But Mum, I didn’t lie!” he gasped, pointing at her. Ella gaped and pointed back at him. He rolled his eyes and raised his hands. “Okay, okay, I’m sorry! It won’t happen again.” His defense was cut short by a sharp glare from Ella. “I want something else, not just apologies,” Ella said, raising her brows, a mischievous look etched on her face. “No, no! Anything but that! Mum, please, say something!” Chris dramatically shook his mother’s hand. Bianca smiled but said nothing. “My dear koala, I mean, Ella, my dear best friend. Please,” he pleaded, throwing his arms around her. “No, I…” Ella's words were cut short by a commanding voice that echoed through the room. “When will you two grow up?” The voice belonged to Queen Mother Annabelle, who strode towards them with a stern expression. Chris and Ella hung their heads, gulping nervously. They exchanged accusing stares, looking like children caught misbehaving. Bianca leaned in close and whispered, “Don’t you think you’re being too hard on them?” Annabelle kept staring at the two and then whispered back to Bianca, “Don’t ruin it.” Her years as a queen had earned her a reputation for being able to silence an entire room. “And you,” she called out to Ella, “why are you disturbing my grandson?” Ella looked up timidly at her and said in a tiny voice, “I’m sorry.” She averted her gaze from the queen. Tension filled the air as the former queen gently raised Ella’s chin. “When I talk to you, look me in the eye,” she instructed. They held each other’s gaze for a moment before smiles broke across their faces. “Granny, I miss you!” Ella squealed as she threw her arms around Annabelle. The former queen laughed and hugged her back, her stern demeanor vanishing. “Oh, my precious Ella, I miss you too,” she whispered in a warm and calm voice. Chris and Evan exchanged glances, relief evident on their faces. “Grandma, you need to stop scaring us like this,” Evan chuckled, wrapping his arms around Annabelle. The former queen smiled and ruffled his hair. Next was Clara, who also embraced the former queen. “Oh, Clara, I missed you, sweetie,” Annabelle grinned as she squeezed her tighter. The former queen continued to exchange greetings with the rest of the family members. “It’s time for the engagement,” Bianca announced with excitement. Everyone walked toward the stage where the ceremony was set to begin. The ballroom, adorned with towering windows and glistening chandeliers, buzzed with anticipation. Silence descended as the guests turned their attention to the couple. Standing on stage, the couple exchanged rings, and the joy in the room was palpable. Ella gazed up at Evan, emotions shimmering in her eyes. Being playful, Evan winked at her as he gently slipped the ring onto her finger. Ella giggled, and the guests erupted in applause. After the formalities, Chris and Clara exchanged rings, and the mood shifted to a more playful atmosphere as games were introduced. At one point, the couple was blindfolded and tried to guess each other’s favorite things. Laughter filled the room when Chris hilariously guessed the wrong dessert for Clara. “Babe?” Clara gasped in playful shock. “Sorry, babe,” he apologized, raising his hands in surrender. The crowd joined in, teasing them as they stumbled through their answers. As the evening progressed, the center of attention shifted to the dance floor, where the couples switched partners. Chris, always eager to show off his moves, twirled Ella around effortlessly. The marbled floor glistened under the lights as Ella’s laughter echoed throughout the room. They moved in perfect harmony, happiness evident in every step. Clara and Evan felt a bit uncomfortable as Chris lifted Ella off the floor by her waist and twirled her in the air. She giggled and looked down at him, and they both appeared far too comfortable with each other. “They are just dancing,” Evan whispered, noting Clara’s expression. Clara nodded but continued dancing with Evan. “Just a little bit uncomfortable,” she said with a soft smile. Meanwhile, their family members watched from the sidelines with pride, enjoying the evening filled with shared joy and laughter. It was an evening that marked the beginning of a new life for the newly engaged couple. “Get the cars ready; we need to be on our way,” King Charles instructed in a calm yet firm voice. “We’ll be picking up my mum along the way,” he added, glancing at his wife and children, who nodded in agreement. He got into the family car with his wife, three daughters, and Annabelle. “Yes, and as for the car I requested, I want the keys first thing after our wedding,” Ella said, turning to Chris. Taking a deep breath, she continued with determination, “Clara and I are going out for a spa.” Chris widened his eyes in surprise. “What? No way! I’m not giving it to you!” He walked toward their car and opened the driver’s seat. Ella pulled him away from it and looked him in the eye. “The golden card will be with me for two days, and last but not least, my favorite dessert will be made by you,” she grinned, dusting off invisible dust from her shoulders. “My car, the card, and your favorite dessert—never impossible!” Chris turned away and crossed his arms. “But you made a promise to Mum,” Ella teased, raising an eyebrow. Chris thought about it but still decided to act stubborn. “Well, let’s get this test done, and you’ll see how I’ll get it,” Ella said proudly, raising her hands in demonstration. “I’ll drive!” Evan gently pulled the key away from Ella, concerned about her driving skills. “I can drive,” she stated, confused. He nodded at her but continued to hold the key. The mood was light, but a sense of anticipation lingered as they headed to a special place—sacred ground that had belonged to the royal family for generations. It was a place where couples were tested a day before their wedding, a tradition steeped in both mystery and significance. The cars rolled down the quiet roads as Chris leaned in to look at his brother. “Listen, bro, I’ll be honest with you. This monkey right here…” He tilted his head toward Ella, who was busy chatting with Clara. “She will fail the test.” His brother snorted and shook his head. “Don’t be ridiculous,” he smirked, looking ahead at the road. Ella leaned forward and whispered, “I heard you, SpongeBob. Let me tell you, I’ll pass every test—unlike you.” Chris chuckled mockingly in disbelief and nodded. Their playful banter continued as time flew by. After about an hour of driving, the landscape around them changed. The temperature dropped sharply as the wind picked up, rattling the trees. “What the hell?” Clara exclaimed as she rolled up the window, shivering from the cold breeze. “It wasn't this cold two minutes ago!” Evans quickly rolled up all the windows, and they each pulled their jackets tighter, seeking warmth as they stepped out of the car. They walked through the mist-covered woods for fifteen minutes before meeting the rest of the family. “Thank goodness! I thought you guys went missing!” the queen exclaimed as she rushed toward them, relief evident in her voice. Chris, still in a teasing mood, muttered, “We almost did.” The queen shot him a hard stare, immediately bringing him back to seriousness. “Bianca, let my poor child be,” Clara gasped, rushing forward with excitement. “Grandma Odette!” The king’s mother laughed and hugged Clara, visibly happy to see her. “How’s the future queen holding up?” Odette asked, tracing Clara’s engagement ring. Clara blushed and smiled at the elderly woman. “I should have been the first person you hugged,” Chris muttered as he stepped in to embrace his grandmother. “Come on, Chris, I missed you, darling,” Odette said, gently pulling his cheeks and ruffling his hair. “Hello, Grandma,” Evans smiled warmly, also hugging his grandmother with affection. “You’ve grown into a handsome young man,” Odette remarked, tapping his cheeks lovingly. However, her smile faded when she noticed Ella standing behind him. “Too bad you fell into the wrong hands,” she said, casting a glance at Ella. Evans forced a smile and quickly looked back at Ella. The girl bit her lip and hung her head. Chris gently took her hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze. Ella looked up at him, offering a grateful smile; having her best friend there to comfort her was enough.
