The phone only rang twice before Tess answered.
“Hey, Max!” Her shrill voice cut into the line. Max held the phone out a few inches from his ear to avoid hearing loss.
“Hey, were you with Xander and Monica tonight?”
“Yeah, we went to a party together, but Xander ditched and then Monica ditched,” she responded, clearly annoyed.
“Right. Where exactly was this party?”
“Splash Resort, the big water park just outside of town. Kim and I are still here if you want to join us.”
“Alright, bye,” Max replied curtly.
Max knew the she-wolf liked him. He heard her giggling about it to Monica more than a few times when she was hanging out at the packhouse. He didn’t care to mess around with girls. Not when he knew he had a perfect mate out there.
Every wolf was given a soul mate from the Moon Goddess, Selene. Hades and Selene were lovers. But, Hades, being the god of death, was infertile. Hades created werewolves to protect mankind and keep demons in Hell, but he also made them for Selene. They were a replacement for the children he could never give her. Werewolves used to only be able to shift at night. Their mournful cries to the moon represented Hades’s longing for Selene and the pain he felt being separated from her. In return, Selene gifted werewolves with a true soul mate, a love that would rival all others. Each time two souls were brought together, it was meant to remind Hades of Selene’s undying love for him.
Over the years, werewolves have moved further away from the old ways. They caged their wolf’s spirit and tamed their true natures. Most werewolves these days are little more than humans. They no longer had the speed, heightened senses, or strength they used to. Max never understood how other werewolves could carelessly throw away power. Since the day he got his wolf, Obsidian, they had shared one mind. He never buried his wolf’s will or tried to control him like Xander and Eric did to their wolves.
As ranked members, the three of them were given more dominant wolves to help them protect and run their pack. As an Alpha, Xander should be nearly invincible, but he spent too much time tightening the leash on Ares. Now, even when Xander attempted to subdue Max and the others back in the kitchen at the packhouse, his Alpha aura barely affected him.
The moment the elevator doors opened and Max laid eyes on Jade, his wolf began stirring in his mind. Obsidian had never glanced twice at a she-wolf, but when Max locked eyes with Jade he heard Obsidian whisper, “Mine.” Max scowled when he remembered how possessive Xander was towards the girl. Eric seemed overly interested in Jade as well. Max found out from Eric that she was the sister of that asshole, Kyle, and that she was younger than them. She wouldn’t feel the mate pull until she came of age, which had to be soon based on how his wolf was reacting to her.
Max was fine being patient and waiting for the mate bond to set in place. His wolf seemed certain that Jade was their mate. But, mate or not, he couldn’t believe what he heard when Xander said he left those mother fuckers who tried to hurt her alive. He was determined to find them and finish the job.
He pulled up to the resort and stepped out of his old school beamer. The car belonged to his grandpa, who raised Max. Both of Max’s parents had passed away after being hit by a drunk driver. Other than his grandpa and his wolf, Max had no other family. He closed his eyes and spoke to Obsidian.
Let’s find them, and tear them apart.
My pleasure Obsidian answered. Max’s grey eyes rippled to black like ink being poured into clear water. With his heightened senses, Max walked in and scanned the park. A few steps in he picked up Jade’s very faint scent, it was pure and crisp like a rainstorm. He ran up several flights of stairs to a secluded area. There were several hot pools. As soon as he approached one, he caught the scent of blood. The mixture of Jade’s scent and blood drove Obsidian mad. The first hot tub was full of girls in bikinis. They looked Max up and down, but he didn’t notice them. He kept moving past the second empty hot tub until he approached the last one. Jade’s scent was strongest here. He crouched down and saw several drops of blood splatter on the ground, but something was off. The blood had a rancid, sour smell. He swiped his finger across it and brought his hand closer to his face. The blood was black and tar-like.
DEMONS!!! Obsidian growled.
Now that he had their scent, Max ran out of the park and into the woods that lined the parking lot. He shifted into his massive black wolf, not caring to remove his clothes first. They shredded in the air and fell like confetti around him. As soon as his paws hit the ground, Obsidian took off at a sprint, following the rotten smell of demon blood into the forest. The scent led him to a run-down apartment building on the outskirts of town. He shifted back into his human form and broke the door of the apartment off its hinges with a single punch. There was a pierced-tatted-up guy with a crooked, broken nose lying on a dirty couch. He jolted out as the door flew across the room and smashed into a wall.
“What the f**k!” the pierced guy shouted. He took one look at Max and tried to scramble out of the room. Max kicked his back and sent him flying hard into the ground. A dark-haired guy came running in the room and glanced at the scene in front of him.
“Oh s**t!” he yelled as he backed away into the apartment. Max bent down and snapped the guy’s neck. He could smell Jade on him, it sent Obsidian into a murderous frenzy. He dropped the guy’s limp body and went after the other one. Obsidian could smell the coward’s fear from down the hall. He ripped the locked door handle off the door and stepped into one of the rooms. The coward stared at him with frightened eyes. Max stepped closer and suddenly the coward’s demeanor changed, the energy in the room shifted, making the hairs on the back of Max’s neck stand straight up. The coward stood and glared at Max, his eyes glowing red. Max wasted no time as he tackled the demon to the ground. He wrapped his hands around the demon’s neck, but the possessed human was much stronger now that the demon had come forward. Max struggled to keep him pinned down.
“I’m not afraid of you, dog! My master will resurrect me and send me back for the girl,” the demon yelled out.
Max froze.
“What did you just say?” Max gritted out. The demon smiled when he sensed Max’s fear.
“Who’s your master? What girl?” Max’s claws extended from his fists and stabbed into the demon. The demon cried out.
“Jade. The King wants Jade. He’ll send his army for her,” he spits out.
Max forced himself to keep his composure at the mention of her name.
“What king?” He pushed his claws further into the demon’s chest.
“Abaddon,” he hissed before he crumbled to dust. Max remained on the ground, his chest heaving up and down as he processed what happened.
Demons are after our mate, let’s go! Obsidian shouted in his mind. Max stood and shifted back into his wolf, running at full speed back to his car.
When Max got to his car, he quickly shifted back and grabbed shorts out of his trunk. He threw them on, got in his car, and dialed Xander, but he didn’t pick up.
“s**t!” he cursed as he pulled out of the parking lot and headed back to the packhouse. He prayed to the Moon Goddess that Jade was still there.
