Chapter 8 - A Nightmarish Awakening As the warm glow of their romantic evening under the stars at Trocadéro Gardens faded into the night, Alice and Thibaut had returned to their hotel room, their hearts still fluttering with the magic of their love. They had shared dreams and whispered promises, completely lost in each other's arms. The city of Paris, with its twinkling lights and gentle breeze, seemed to cocoon them in a world of their own. They had fallen asleep, entwined in a loving embrace, believing that their love story was just beginning. However, their blissful slumber was abruptly shattered by the loud and persistent banging on the door of their hotel room. Alice was the first to wake, her heart pounding with a mix of confusion and fear. She glanced at the clock, realizing that it was the middle of the night. "Thibaut, do you hear that?" she whispered, shaking him gently in an attempt to rouse him from his deep sleep. Thibaut groggily stirred, his eyes slowly fluttering open. He heard the banging too, and a look of concern crossed his face as he sat up in bed. Before they could process what was happening, the loudspeaker of a police megaphone echoed through the room, demanding Thibaut's surrender. "Thibaut, what's going on?" Alice asked, her voice trembling with fear. "Why are the police here, and why do they want you?" Thibaut's expression turned grave, and he seemed to be struggling to find the right words. He finally sighed and admitted, "Alice, there's something I should have told you." Alice's heart raced as she waited for an explanation, her mind conjuring all sorts of scenarios. Thibaut continued, his voice heavy with regret, "I'm not just a photographer. I have a past, and there are things I haven't been completely honest about." Alice felt a knot tighten in her stomach as her thoughts swirled with fear and confusion. "What do you mean, Thibaut? What have you done?" Before Thibaut could respond, the situation escalated dramatically. The hotel room door burst open, and a member of a special police force stormed in, shouting commands. Thibaut's reflexes kicked in, and he made a sudden movement towards a drawer, where he kept his passport and identification. Alice, terrified by the sudden intrusion, had no context for what was happening. In a state of panic, she reached for something she had no knowledge of: Thibaut's handgun, which he had hidden away. In the dimly lit room, with adrenaline coursing through her veins, Alice reacted impulsively and fired a single shot at the intruding officer. The deafening sound of the gunshot reverberated through the room, and chaos ensued. Thibaut, horrified by what had just occurred, rushed to the fallen officer's side, attempting to provide aid, but it was too late. Other officers quickly swarmed the room, apprehending Thibaut and Alice. Amid the commotion, Alice tried to explain that she had acted out of fear and confusion, not realizing the consequences of her actions. But her explanations fell on deaf ears as the police took control of the situation. Alice and Thibaut were both arrested and handcuffed, their love story suddenly taking a nightmarish turn. As they were led out of the hotel room, Alice cast one last desperate glance at the scene of chaos and confusion that had once been their sanctuary. In the cold, unforgiving light of the police station, they faced a new reality—one that was marked by uncertainty and the looming specter of legal consequences.
