Chapter 10: Anomaly “Skin white as snow, lips red as blood, and hair black as ebony” —The Brothers Grimm. “I don’t have a nickname yet,” I admit. “Really? None of your friends ever tried to shorten your name before?” Theo asks curiously. “I don’t really have any friends. I spend my days studying. Apparently, that’s not everyone’s favorite thing to do.” His face turns a fraction solem. “That must be lonely.” “Not really. I’ve got my teachers to talk to, at least.” “Don’t you ever wish that you’ve got friends your age to talk to?” “Sometimes. I wish someone could have been more like me, so we can study together.” “Or you can be like them,” he suggests. “I don’t think there’ll be anyone like you. You’re to different.” “Yeah, I know. It’s by choice, though. I like being different. It makes me stand out from the norm,” I explain. “Besides, I should get myself used to being alone. The path to leadership is a cold and lonely one.” “Oh, you plan to become a coven leader, then?” He guesses correctly. “That’s my end goal.” I crave complete dominance —that’s just how big of a control freak I am. I like to get things done my way, in my own timing. There’s no better job for me than this, especially with the Hive potentially coming my way. “How about you?” I ask him. Theo leans himself against the railing beside me, hands of thick muscles gripping around the horizontal bar. His lips are shut tight, as if struggling for an answer. Finally, after some consideration, he finally speaks up. “Don’t laugh, but, I want to be a hunter.” “Why would I laugh about that?” I ask automatically. He coughs a smile, looking at me with newfound clarity. “See? This is why I like you. You’re an anomaly, just like me.” I understand if it’s me, but, “How come you’re an anomaly as well?” “Well, my father’s an elder. And there’s this unspoken rule that binds me from going out to battle.” “Why? Are you not a good fighter?” “Oh, I’d say I’m pretty decent, alright,” he says smugly. “Ever killed a werewolf before?” “Dozens. One or two at every encounter, mind you.” Theo’s not helpless. “Then why is he so concerned?” “Same reasons why your parents don’t let you out from the coven, I assume.” “Oh, they forbid me, alright. That doesn’t mean I don’t try,” I say with the same smug tone as his. I don’t usually tell people about my escapades, but something about him just makes me want to trust him. “You’ve sneaked out before? Alone?” Now it’s his turn to frown. “Not really.” I’m not that insane. “Just a peek.” I hadn’t really gotten out, technically. He lets out a sigh, just before I add, “At daylight.” “Amy! That’s horrible!” He looks mad as hell when he learns this. But why should he? We’re still strangers. We don’t know each other that well yet. The only thing I know for sure, is that there’s this certain beautiful aura that ignites when he’s livid. It’s like every inch of his true self is coming alive through the surface of his pale skin.
