Boom spent the entire evening actively avoiding the main house.
After the incident in the woods, he had retreated straight into the basement archives. Basking in a quiet, subterranean sanctuary filled with towering rows of dark oak shelves, dusty leather volumes, and historical pack registers.
He needed physical space...
He needed cold air...
Most of all, he needed his brain to stop obsessively replaying the exact sensation of Luna’s soft, small frame pressed against his body.
He was a man of numbers, order, and clear boundaries. He believed in spreadsheets and logical outcomes. Falling helplessly for his clumsy, bright-eyed pack guide... a girl whose sole job was to help him navigate a life he hadn't even wanted, was entirely, dangerously irrational.
Yet, every time he shut his eyes, his mind vividly conjured her wide, shimmering hazel eyes, the rosy flush on her cheeks, and the dizzying vanilla scent that seemed to coat his lungs.
"I am officially losing my mind," Boom muttered aloud to the empty room, dragging a hand down his face before pulling a heavy, dust-covered ledger from the top shelf.
"Looking for tax records, or just hiding from my mother?" a light, amused voice called out from the doorway.
Boom startled, nearly dropping the heavy tome onto his toes. He turned around to find Luna standing at the entrance of the archive aisle. She had changed out of her muddy wood clothes and into a pair of soft grey sweatpants and an oversized knit hoodie that swallowed her hands.
She was holding two steaming ceramic mugs, cocoa steam curling into the chilly basement air. She looked cozy, soft, and utterly devastating to his self-control.
"I was actually attempting to read up on pack history," Boom lied smoothly, setting the ledger down on the heavy wooden study table beside him.
"Right. Because 18th-century land dispute ledgers are famously un-put-downable," Luna teased, making a funny facial expression as she made up her last word while stepping into the room and holding out one of the mugs.
"Here. You looked like you were on the verge of an existential crisis during dinner."
"Thank you," Boom said, reaching out to take the mug. Their fingers brushed for a fraction of a second, and both of them flinched at the sharp, electric spark that snapped between their skin.
They both hastily took a step back, maintaining a careful, polite distance.
Luna leaned her hips against the edge of the wooden table, taking a quiet sip from her mug. A tiny, endearing dollop of whipped cream stuck to her upper lip.
Boom stared at it. His analytical brain immediately discarded all logic, instantly calculating the exact angle required to lean down, cup her chin, and lick it off. He swallowed hard, taking a long, scalding gulp of hot chocolate to drown the thought.
"You know," Luna said softly, staring down into her floating marshmallows. "You're actually doing a remarkable job, Boom... Is it okay to call you Boom for now? Or Alpha Boom?"
Boom looked over at her, genuinely surprised and almost amused at her asking. "I nearly flattened you into the dirt with my aura five hours ago. Also, Boom is fine. Please, I'm hardly an Alpha yet. I have so much to learn."
"Okay, yes, you have so much to learn and so little time... like... your volume control is completely broken, so... I think that needs fixing," she laughed softly, looking up at him through her dark lashes.
"But you care. Most Alphas care about dominance, land, and flexing their authority. You care about not hurting people. You care about doing things right. That makes you a far better leader than you give yourself credit for."
A quiet, suffocating warmth bloomed beneath Boom’s ribs, spreading through his chest until his hands felt light.
"I wouldn't even know where to stand if you weren't beside me, Luna," Boom said, genuinely thankful for the girl's presence every day.
"I'll always be beside you," she said instinctively, her voice ringing with a fierce, quiet certainty that caught them both off guard.
The words lingered in the quiet room, heavy and pregnant with unspoken emotion. Luna’s cheeks flushed a violent pink as she realized the weight of what she had blurted out. She looked down quickly, frantically tracing the ceramic rim of her mug.
Boom set his drink down on the table behind her. The solitude of the archives seemed to shrink, pulling them toward one another like opposing gravitational forces.
"Luna," Boom whispered, his tone dropping low and serious.
She looked up, her hazel eyes glistening under the dim candlelight of the wall sconces. "Yeah?"
"There is something seriously wrong with me," he murmured, stepping into her space until he was standing directly between her knees. He placed his palms flat on the wood on either side of her hips, effectively trapping her against the table as he leaned in.
"Every time you walk into a room, my heart loses its rhythm. My wolf doesn't care about the pack elders, or the territory, or the rules. It just wants to stay right here, next to you."
Luna’s breath hitched, her chest rising and falling rapidly beneath her hoodie.
She carefully set her own mug aside, her fingers trembling. "That... that doesn't sound like something is wrong with you, Boom."
"It's completely irrational," he breathed, his eyes scanning every inch of her flushed face.
"I am supposed to be learning how to command a territory. I shouldn't be consumed by how badly I want to reach out and hold your hand."
Luna let out a breathy, nervous laugh, her gaze dropping to his jaw before rising back to his eyes.
"For a certified accountant, you overcomplicate basic things, you know that?" Luna said, trying to lighten the mood... yet still feeling the tension in the air.
"Tell me to step back, Luna," Boom whispered, lowering his face until his lips were barely an inch from hers, his warm breath mingling with hers.
"Tell me to be professional, and I will step away right now."
Luna looked at his mouth, her head spinning in a dizzying storm of desire and fear.
Every instinct in her soul was screaming at her to bridge the tiny gap, to slip her hands into his dark hair, and pull him down into a kiss.
