Before Luna could force a single word past her lips, the harsh, metallic clang of an iron bell echoed from the floor above, shattering the quiet sanctuary into pieces.
CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!
Boom snapped upright instantly, his eyes flashing with an immediate, predatory edge as his head whipped toward the ceiling.
Luna nearly tumbled off the edge of the table, her face burning with a mix of intense frustration and lingering heat.
"The northern border bell!" Luna gasped, her romantic haze evaporating into cold adrenaline.
"Someone is forcing their way past the boundary line!"
Without a word, Boom reached out and caught her hand... not with the hesitant gentleness of before, but with the firm, protective grip of an Alpha... and pulled her toward the exit.
They surged up the stone basement stairs and burst into the grand hall, where dozens of pack members were gathering in chaotic panic.
"What is the situation?" Boom demanded, his voice carrying a booming, natural authority that instantly silenced the entire room.
An elder hurried forward, breathlessly clutching a staff. "Alpha! A rogue pack from the eastern ridge has crossed the creek. They are demanding an immediate audience with the new leader."
Boom took a deep, steadying breath, flexing his large hands at his sides. The hesitant, mild-mannered accountant who had arrived three days ago was gone. In his place stood a man whose bloodline commanded centuries of untamed power.
He turned to Luna, his expression softening for a fleeting second. "Stay inside the main house."
"Absolutely not," Luna said, grabbing his forearm tightly.
"I know the eastern ridge rogues. Their leader is aggressive, but he operates on territory bargains. You need someone who understands the local politics."
Boom searched her face for a moment, seeing the absolute, unwavering resolve in her hazel eyes. He nodded once.
"Alright. But you do not leave my side."
Ten minutes later, Boom and Luna stood at the edge of the dark pine forest, illuminated by the cold silver glow of the half-moon. Across the narrow, rushing creek stood five imposing wolves with scarred fur and hostile, wild eyes.
The largest of them—a massive grey beast missing part of his left ear—stepped forward and shifted into a tall, rugged human form.
He wore a worn leather, sneering arrogantly as he assessed Boom.
"So this is the city boy," the rogue leader spat, looking at Boom's clean clothes with disdain.
"You don't smell like an Alpha. You smell like soap and paper."
Boom didn't flinch. He stood tall, his posture relaxed but entirely grounded. "And you smell like you haven't seen running water since the last solar eclipse. State your business on Crescent Moon land."
Luna pressed her lips together tightly to keep from letting out a snort.
The rogue leader’s smirk vanished. "We are claiming hunting rights in the lower valley. Grant them, or we take them by force."
"The valley belongs to our pack," Luna spoke up firmly, taking a brave half-step forward. "Our families rely on those grounds. You have no legal or territorial claim here."
The rogue’s sneering gaze snapped at Luna, dark and vicious. "Hold your tongue, little girl. The men are speaking."
Without warning, he lunged across the narrow creek, his fingers elongating into lethal, obsidian claws as he aimed a deadly swipe straight at Luna’s throat.
It happened in less than a second.
A roar shattered the air...
Deafening, terrifying, and echoing with the ancient, unyielding power of a true Alpha.
Boom moved like a shadow. He intercepted the strike in mid-air, his hand clamping around the rogue leader’s wrist with bone-crushing force mere inches from Luna’s face. The sheer momentum of his stand caused the earth beneath their boots to c***k.
Boom’s eyes were no longer brown. They burned with a brilliant, terrifying gold light that illuminated the dark trees. The magnitude of his protective aura exploded outward, wrapping around Luna like an impenetrable iron fortress.
"Lay another finger near her, or even stare at her the wrong way..." Boom growled, his voice vibrating with a supernatural, primal fury that made the forest trees tremble, "...and I will tear your pack apart limb from limb, inside out."
The rogue leader went deathly pale. Behind him, the four remaining rogues instantly collapsed to their knees in the mud, whimpering in agony as Boom’s suffocating Alpha presence forced them into absolute submission. The leader scrambled backward into the water, clutching his fractured wrist and staring at Boom in unadulterated horror.
"We... we're leaving! We're sorry, Alpha Boom," the rogue choked out, turning and fleeing into the dark timber, his pack scrambling after him in frantic terror.
Silence returned to the clearing.
Boom stood at the water's edge, his chest heaving as the golden fire in his eyes slowly receded back to dark brown. He turned around instantly, his hands grasping Luna’s shoulders, frantically scanning her body.
"Are you hurt?" he asked, his voice trembling with leftover adrenaline. "Did he touch you?"
"I'm... I'm completely fine, Boom," Luna whispered, staring up at him in absolute, stunned awe.
"I... I mean... Alpha Boom," she said, bowing her head slightly.
Her heart was hammering against her ribs, but not from fear. The terrifying, beautiful fury he had displayed the second her life was threatened—it wasn't just an Alpha defending a subordinate. It was primal. It was ancient. It was absolute.
Deep within her chest, her own inner wolf let out a contented, ringing howl, recognizing the fierce, protective claim vibrating from the man holding her.
Boom stared down at her, his hands still trembling on her shoulders. As the adrenaline ebbed away, a sudden, blinding clarity struck him like thunder.
The unbearable pull he felt toward her, the desperate need to shield her, the way his energy ignited at her touch... it wasn't just a crush. It was not a distraction.
It was the mate bond.
Boom swallowed hard, staring into her shimmering hazel eyes under the moonlight, realizing with absolute certainty that the sweet, clumsy girl who had fallen at his feet on day one was his destined mate.
And looking at the breathless, blushing expression on Luna's face, he knew she was finally feeling it too...
