Olivia heard voices. she thought it was just a dream but then, when she was fully awake she listened, it was the night guard wispered just outside her window that had alarmed her. She had a late night and had struggled to fall asleep. Jason hadn't called her since he dropped her off on Saturday. it was Tuesday already and she hadn't heard from him. He had occupied her thoughts even more! despite the fact that she had agreed to just let the whole the whole thing go. She was tempted to call and say hello but she thought he would misunderstand her. She couldn't understand why it had bothered her, or why she wasn't sleeping well, or why she had been paying so much attention to her phone.
Just has she had finally drifted off to sleep the night guard wispering in her bedroom window had woken her up. if she walk up to her window to ask them to be quiet she might not be able to go back to sleep. so she just lay there hoping they would just go away.
Now that she was fully awake again, she picked up her phone to make the call that had been tutoring her all day. Her heart raced as the call connected from the other end, and she half- hopped that he wouldn't answer. Why is he so laid back anyway? she thought to herself. Why should I be the one calling?
Jason hated midnight calls. that was when you get all the bad news that happened during the day. he had gone to bed early and was roused from deep sleep. he grabbed his phone from the nightstand, squinting his eyes at the light from the screen. Olivia? she had been on his mind ever since that kiss on Saturday. she had thought of calling her as often as she had crossed his mind but he wanted to give her time to rethink her decision about being just friends. he was so sure he wanted more.
He tapped the button.
" Hello" he said. there was silence on the other end.
" Hi" she finally wispered, sleepily. " Hi Jason, can you hear me?" she bit her lips. Oh God, I shouldn't have called him.
" yes, I can hear you. is everything ok?"
" Sure. I hope I didn't wake you up?"
" No,no. I was just calling asleep though. what's up?" " oh, nothing. I'm so sorry I'm calling this late" "nothing to be sorry about darling, I'm really glad you called!"
Hmmm. he did not just called me darling. She blushed. " How was your day?"
" Very busy, yours? I've been thinking about you" he said softly.
" Then why did you call or text?" she regretted the outburst just as it left her mouth. I now appear desperate, Lord.
" You didn't seem keen after the kiss. I didn't want to be one of those over persistent irritants that don't back off when a lady tells them to".
" I didn't tell you to back off, Jason. I.....
The next sound that was heard is of wood breaking apart. then another bang that sounded like her screen door being forced open. She was wide-eyed with shock. The first thing that came to her mind was: hide , which she did, lying flat on her stomach underneath her bed.
"Hello?" He held the phone away from his ear and looked at the screen to see if the call had been cut off. " Hello?" he repeated. he could hear muffled voices in the background but Olivia wasn't responding. so he hung up.
* Where is the person?" came an unfamiliar, rough voice. he sounded like someone who knew just a few English words. she was trying to figure out his infected tone when she heard the person trashing around. " Where is the owner of this room?" he barked. "I have told you there's no body in the house" she heard their security guard say. suddenly the old man screams in pain. Oli shuddered at the thought of what they must have done to him.she couldn't tell how many they were as they stomped around her house opening doors and cabinets. breaking things and moving furnitures. she heard their footsteps approaching her bedroom door.in her panic she couldn't remember if she had bolted the door. she peeped out from under the bed and saw the handle turn. nothing. she held her breath, waiting for them to kick down the door. but then she head their footsteps moving away. she heard them say something to the guard then she heard her fridge door being opened. their voices become faint as they move. heaving a sigh , she crawled until she could stretch her hand to carry her ringing phone from under the pillow.
" Hello, Jason" she was crying.
" what's wrong dear?" he asked, flinging his duvet aside. is Everything ok?
" I've got robbers in my flat.they just left my flat I'm sure they are still around..."
the call ended abruptly. Jason dashed to his closet to grab a shirt to wear oh his pyjamas bottom. he snatched his car keys from where they are and dashed out. he had lots of questions oh his mind. was he hurt? Does she live alone? he was almost sure she did. though she had mentioned an elder sister.what if she had been r***d? beaten? he checked the clock in his car. it was pass midnight can. he called her number again but it kept ringing. " Are you ok?_ he asked her on messenger " please respond"
no response.he drove to her flat at neckbreack speed.
she couldn't take his call. She knew she wouldn't talk as she was shivering so badly in fear. and she couldn't risk them hearing her voice and coming back for her. she crawled from under her bed and moved to the other side of her room and sat behind the curtains. for what seemed like forever, the only sound she could hear was the guards voice has he cried out in pain. she could not risk going out to check on him either. After few more minutes, everything went silent. then the guard screamed for help, his voice so filled with pain that she had to do something. she was turning the handle of her door when she heard some more banging on the gate of the main house. she dived back under the bed, where she stayed, straining to make out what the voices were saying.
"Open the door! Hello?" hitting harder. " someone is hurt" she heard more voices but didn't come out. she heard people running around, a car engine started and driving away, and her front door opening. " Olivia?" he called softly.
is that Jason? she paused to pay attention.
" Olivia, it's Jason. are you ok? you can come out now" .
she tried to be calm but her hands were still shaking so badly that she couldn't put the key in the lock. she walked to the the door, pressing her ear to it. " Jason?" " yes it's me. come on, open up, it's safe now". he said softly.
she slipped in the key and unlock the door. apparently both their hands were on the handle because they turned it at the same time. she rushed to him and he held her still the shivering stop. he led her her to the leaving room where she met the chaos caused by the robbers. she bent to inspect the red liquid on the floor. it looked like blood . oh my God! she wispered. " did you see the guard on your way here?" " calm down, they weren't sophisticated robbers, they had only knives. he was stabbed but he's been rushed to the hospital. he should be fine." her shivering started again and he pulled her to him. " This is not helping, let me take you away from here."
She couldn't even respond. she kept staring into space, wondering what would have happened to her if the bedroom door hadn't been locked and the robbers had gotten in. they had broken the knob of the main entrance but she couldn't leave it open. the metal door had a latch she could lock. After locking the door, Jason guided her to his car parked out side the building and secured her seat belt before driving to his apartment.
