Chapter 32:The way out 2

DAISY'S POV The gray wolf looked at the other wolves, and they seemed to talk with their eyes. "Nick," the female wolf said finally. "What should we do with her?" Nick, the gray wolf, looked at me with cold eyes. "Usually, we kill any hybrid who comes into our territory," he said. My hand went to my belly, trying to protect my baby. "But," Nick continued, "you're pregnant. Our pack laws say we don't kill pregnant females, even enemies." I felt a little bit better. "However," Nick said, and my good feeling went away, "we can't let you leave. Now you know where our territory is." "I promise I won't tell anyone," I said quickly. "I swear." "The promise of a hybrid means nothing," the female wolf said. "Then what do you want me to do?" "You'll be our prisoner until your baby is born," Nick said. "Then we'll decide what to do with both of you." "You can't keep me here," I said. "My mate will come looking for me." "Let him come," Nick said with a mean smile. "We'll be ready for him." Two more wolves came out of the forest and stood on both sides of me. I was surrounded. "Don't make this harder than it needs to be," Nick said. "Come with us quietly, and we won't hurt you or your baby." I looked around at all the wolves. I could try to use my power to fight them, but I was scared of what might happen. What if I couldn't control it? What if it took me even further away from Noah? "Okay," I said. "I'll come with you. But you have to promise not to hurt my child." "As long as you behave, your child will be safe," Nick said. They made me walk deeper into the forest, to a village hidden among the big trees. It was much bigger than Noah's pack territory, with many wooden houses and hundreds of wolves everywhere. All of them stopped and stared at me as we walked by. I could hear them whispering. "Look, it's a hybrid." "Disgusting." "Why is she still alive?" "Look at her belly. The thing inside will be even worse." I tried not to listen to their mean words, but they hurt. These people didn't even know me, but they already hated me just because of what I was. Nick took me to a small wooden house at the edge of the village. It had bars on the windows and only one door. "This will be your home until your baby is born," he said, opening the door. Inside, the house was simple but clean. There was a bed, a small table, a chair, and nothing else. "What about food?" I asked. "Someone will bring you food three times every day," Nick said. "And there will always be a guard outside." "Can I write a letter to my mate? Just to let him know I'm safe?" Nick laughed. "No letters. No contact with anyone outside. As far as the world knows, you disappeared." My heart felt like it was breaking. Noah would be going crazy with worry. "Please," I begged. "He's probably thinking I'm dead." "Good," the female wolf said. "Maybe he'll forget about you and find a proper mate." "He would never forget about me," I said angrily. "And when he finds me-" "When he finds you, he'll be walking into a trap," Nick said. "We'll be waiting for him." They pushed me into the house and locked the door. I heard them putting a heavy bar across it from outside. I sat down on the bed and put my hands on my belly. "Don't worry, little baby," I whispered. "Your daddy will find us. I know he will." But as the hours went by and it got dark, I started to wonder if that was true. This forest was so big and I had no idea how far the power had carried me. Noah might search for months and never find this place. I tried to reach out with my mind, the way I sometimes could when Noah was in danger. But I felt nothing. Either he was too far away, or something about this place was blocking my abilities. Around midnight, I heard footsteps outside. Then a key turning in the lock. The door opened and a young woman came in with food. She looked about my age, with long brown hair and kind eyes. "I brought you dinner," she said softly. "Thank you," I said, surprised by her kindness. She put the plate on the table and looked at me curiously. "Are you really a hybrid?" she asked. "Yes," I said. "Half vampire and half werewolf." "That must be lonely," she said. "Not belonging completely to either world." I was surprised she understood. "It is sometimes." "My name is Emma," she said. "I'm one of the pack healers." "I'm Daisy." "That's a pretty name," Emma said with a smile. "How far along are you?" I touched my belly. "About six months, I think." "Do you know if it's a boy or a girl?" "We decided not to find out," I said. "My mate wants it to be a surprise." Emma smiled bigger. "That's sweet. What is your mate like?" I felt my heart hurt thinking about Noah. "He's wonderful. Strong and protective and kind. He loves me even though everyone else thinks I'm a monster." "You don't seem like a monster to me," Emma said quietly. I looked at her in surprise. "Really?" "Really," she said. "You seem scared and lonely and far from home." Tears started in my eyes. It had been so long since someone was kind to me. "Why are you being nice to me?" I asked. Emma looked toward the door to make sure no one was listening. "Because I know what it's like to be different," she whispered. "To be judged for things you can't help." "What do you mean?" Emma pulled up her sleeve and showed me a strange mark on her arm. It looked like a moon with stars around it. "I was born with witch magic," she said. "In this pack, that makes me almost as unwelcome as you." I stared at the mark. "You're a witch?" "Part witch," she said. "My grandmother was a powerful witch who fell in love with a werewolf. My mother had weak magic, but it all came back strong in me." "Does the pack know?" "Nick knows," Emma said. "That's why he lets me stay. My healing magic is useful. But the others think I'm tainted." I felt a connection to this woman. We were both outcasts in our own ways. "Emma," I said carefully, "do you think you could help me?" "Help you how?" "Could you get a message to my mate somehow? Just to let him know I'm alive?" Emma looked nervous. "I don't know. If Nick found out..." "Please," I said. "He must be going crazy with worry. And I'm scared about what might happen to my baby if I stay here." "What do you mean?"
