Chapter 1

1710 Words
Avi's POV "Mommy, can you please take me to your favorite place in the woods?" I excitedly asked my mom. "Baby, I'm a little bit busy at the moment. What about tomorrow?" she asked, turning to face me. "You always say that but still end up telling me your busy," I insisted, pouting. "Darling, you know momma's busy. I'm Luna and Lunas have a lot of duties to do." "Mommy, you promised you would take me today. Pretty pleeeaaase?" I said, pulling the puppy eyes. "Okay! Okay! You know I can't resist those pretty eyes. Let's get going then," she said, smiling at me and leading the way. "Yaaaaaayyy!!! I love you mommy!" I squealed, following her quickly down the stairs. Dad was seated on the couch with his Beta, Eric, talking when we walked into the great room. As soon as he saw us, he came over and gave both of us a kiss on the cheek. "Where are you two headed to?" he asked. "I'm taking Avi for a walk since she insisted," mom said, chuckling lightly. "She promised she would do it," I defended myself. They both burst out laughing. "Heyy," I whined, causing them to laugh some more as dad ruffled my hair. "Tell one of the guards to go with you," dad said after a while. "We'll be fine Daniel," mom said, not liking the thought of being followed by a guard everywhere. "But ...." "No buts Daniel," mom said with finality. "Okay then. Promise me you won't go too deep into the woods," he pleaded. "We promise," mom and I said as we walked out and headed for the woods. Dad was always protective of us. We just learned how to cope because we knew he only did that for our own safety. I hopped in the woods holding mom's hand while she took me to her favorite place. I really loved the woods. They were full of life and made me feel peaceful. In some weird way, I felt connected to the wild. We had gone on for a while, when mom stopped in her tracks sniffing the air. Fear was coming off her in waves. She seemed tense as she looked around frantically. I stood there confused and looked around, but nothing seemed off to me. "Mommy, what's...." before I could finish the sentence, a large brown wolf leaped out of the bushes and snarled at us. It was larger than a normal wolf, and I somehow knew it was powerful. Three more wolves came out slowly approaching us but stayed slightly behind the brown wolf. Mommy stepped in front of me growling dangerously at the wolves ready to attack at any moment. "Avi run!" she let out, before jumping and shifting midair. The wolves immediately started attacking her. She fought them with all she had, making sure none of them came my way. I tried to move, but it was like I was glued to the spot. My throat was dry, and my heart pounded wildly in my chest. I wanted to help my mom, but I didn't know what to do. It was like my body just stopped functioning, completely paralyzed in fear. I stood there helpless and unable to look away from the sight of my mom struggling against the four wolves. I watched as my mom lost more and more blood from the injuries she had. She was getting weaker by the minute. The wolves never backed down. They had several injuries but not as bad as the ones mom had. The large brown wolf bit down on mom's front leg and she howled out in pain. I struggled to move, but to no avail. I couldn't feel my body. It felt like I was pushed to the back of my mind and forced to watch as my mom died slowly. Made a useless bystander to my mom's torture. My body had betrayed me, when I needed it most. A loud agitated howl cut through the air, coming from the direction of the pack house. I knew that howl. It was dad. He was coming. Relief flooded my body and I felt a small flicker of hope ignite in me. Someone was coming to help, mom would be saved. I looked back at mom and felt my blood run cold. Everything seemed to slow down at that moment. The large brown wolf chomped down on mom's neck, ripping off a sizable chunk of flesh. Her body forcefully shifted back to her human form, she was covered in unimaginable bruises and blood. Before I could even process what had happened, the wolves disappeared just as fast as they had appeared in the first place. NO! Finally, my body seemed to respond to my attempts to move, and I ran to where mom's mangled body lay. I threw myself on top of her, gripping her tightly, as though I was holding on to her very life. "Mommy, please don't leave me. Mommy, please stay. Please." I choked out. Mom looked at me sorrowfully coughing out blood as she tried to speak. She looked so pained and troubled. Her skin paled as she continued to lose more blood. "Y...y...you...a...are...p...p...." were the last words she managed to stammer out before going limp in my arms. "No! No please! Please mommy wake up... Mommmmyyyy!" I screamed out in agony. I didn't notice how much I had sobbed until I felt the wetness in my chest. My world had been shattered. My heart breaking. I felt useless. If I had just stayed in my room and not insisted on leaving the pack house with mom, she would still be with me. This was all my fault! And then it hit me like a truck. She was dead...because of me ! Pain. That was what I felt. No please no... please.... I jolted out of 'bed', cold sweat trickling down my forehead as I trembled like a leaf in a storm. I looked around frantically, releasing a breath when I realized where I was. Although I wasn't quite sure if it was a breath of relief. I took deep calming breaths trying to steady my erratic heart and checked the time on my phone. It was 4.00AM. Right about time for me to get ready. Getting out of 'bed', I headed to my small bathroom, turning on the shower and let the cold water soothe my tense muscles. After carefully washing up, I patted myself dry, and began brushing my teeth. I caught a look at my reflection in the mirror and couldn't help but flinch at the sight. I looked breathtaking. And not in a nice way. I had scars all over my body. Fresh bruises littered my stomach and arms. My ribs pressed against my skin like armor, due to being underweight. I was the very definition of skin and bone. My long black hair had grown straight, no longer as curly as it used to be. I was short at about 5'6, and the silver orbs staring back at me only added to my odd nature. They had become dull; hollowed by reality. Just as hollow as I felt inside. I was broken — lost to a land of no return. But this had become my norm. After my mom's death, everyone turned against me. They all blamed me for her death. Especially my dad (Daniel), my big brother (Austin) and my big sister (Stacy). They all loathed me, cursing my very existence. My dad, being the Alpha, demoted me to an Omega and disowned me as his daughter after mother's death. He said I was the reason she had died. Even though I had only been 9. Though I couldn't even judge them because I also blamed myself. Her death haunted my every waking day and followed me even in slumber. I could no longer sleep any more than 3 hours. Plagued by nightmares of her death. Ever since I was demoted to an Omega, I had also become the pack's punching bag. They had tortured, beaten and even poisoned me. That became my new reality. A dark and cruel one. But no one cared. Worst of all, my once 'family' also took part in these actions. Still lost in thought, I remembered when I still had the fight in me. Every time they had beaten me up, I tried to fight back, even letting them have the pleasure of hearing me scream in pain and cry. But those days were long-lost. Mother's death had scarred me but they had done far worse. Engraving their anger and hatred into my very soul. Surely I didn't deserve such, or did I? I became an even bigger freak when I did not shift at 13, since that was the normal shifting age. I got made fun of and bullied at school, but I was already used to it all. I still don't have a wolf, and it's all quite pitiful, but there's nothing I could do about it, so I just let it be. I had already accepted my reality. The less I fought, the easier it was to bear. The thought of my massive workload crashed me back to reality. I quickly got out of the bathroom and got dressed in old baggy jeans and a large torn hoodie. I didn't own much. I slept in the basement since I was the lowest of all Omegas. Because its walls were soundproof, it was an added advantage for the pack to muffle my screams, although I had stopped giving them the satisfaction of hearing them. My room only consisted of a small shower, a thin mattress, one flimsy blanket, a small suitcase which held my numbered clothes and an old backpack that had a few school books. I had a picture of me and my mom that I kept hidden safely. It was the only thing I had that belonged to her. After getting ready, I checked the time before heading downstairs to make breakfast for the pack. Only 20 minutes had gone by, so I was still in time, otherwise I would have had a bad start. I shuddered as the thought of silver being pumped into my blood crossed my mind.
