DEVON'S POV . Devon's call with his mother has him feeling restless as his brain is suddenly filled up with different menacing thoughts. He doesn't understand why his parents would suddenly want to do this to him. How is he going to cope with the situation now? How will he handle it now? he never bargained for this at all. All this wouldn't have been happening if only Beth didn't break up with him. The bloody bastard! Just the thought of her has already set a a fire in his soul for the i***t. He had loved her so much and had wanted to do life with her. He even went out of his way to make sure that she had everything that she could have ever wanted but then she broke up with him by letter and with a stupid excuse as well. His hatred for women has run deep ever since then. He had promised not to be involved no matter what it'll cost him. But when his mother had openly announced that no one would be getting a dime of their inheritance if they didn't get married, he knew that he needed to act fast and that was how the story of him being in a relationship surfaced. It was supposed to keep them off his back until he was ready to fall in love again but it seemed as if, fate wasn't smiling down on him anymore. After dismissing from work later in the day, he picked up his things and decided to head home calling it a day. So he exited the building and made way to his car, parked just outside the parking lot of his company. He got in, started the ignition and drove all the way home. "Welcome back Sir" his security greets when he enters into the building. He is somehow too occupied to even answer. Devon parked his car in the garage and makes his way inside his apartment. The walls of his house are neatly painted in white and grey colors. He has had a liking for that color for the longest of time and so he thought it fit to make it a part of his home. "Welcome sir Devon" his maid greeted and he nods, holding out his bags and shoes for her to keep it nicely in his bedroom which she does with immediate effect. "What would you like to have dinner sir?" She asks after returning from the errand. "I think I'm okay Lucia, I'll take care of the rest. You can go home now" "Thank you sir" she comments before going in to pick up her things. She bids him farewell before leaving for home. Devon uses the opportunity to text his best friend to come over before using the bathroom to wash up. He dries himself after bathing and wears his robe before making his way into the kitchen to prepare noodles to step it down with a glass of orange juice. His best friend walks in soon after, looking like someone who was run over by a bus. "What's the situation" Stephen hollers as soon as he steps into the house. "Why are you even dressed like that?" Devon asks giving his friend a quick glance. He was dressed up in clothes that would pass off as pajamas. "You sent me a text that you were in danger and that it's an emergency so I should get my ass to your house on time" he stated, holding up his phone to Devon so that he could see the contents of the message on the screen. "Or were you asleep when you texted this? I thought that your house was on fire or something bad had happened to you and then I come here to find you eating instant noodles? Boy you're testing the patience level of this friendship and it's not funny anymore." He chides him. Devon slurps down the remnants of the noodles and discarded the dishes nicely in the kitchen. "I have a major problem and sadly, you're going to help me come up with a solution" "Um, I don't understand. What's the nature of this problem?" Stephen asks his now conflicted best friend who seems to have the weight of the world on his shoulders for some reason. "My mom called. They'll be visiting in a months time" Devon explains and Stephen slaps his arms in excitement. "That's good news bro. You've never mentioned your family in the few years that I've known you. It's almost like you don't want to talk about them. I'll finally be meeting your parents. It's great that they're visiting right?" Stephen asks and Devon gives him a look before walking past him to the living room. He sits down on one of the couches and tightly hold a pillow to his chest. If only Stephen knew that his inheritance is tied to this visit. If only Stephen knows that he'll be done for if he doesn't find a woman to call his wife soon. "Is it not good news?" Stephen pressed on, surprised at his friend's reaction. "No. it's horrible news" Devon comments almost immediately causing Stephen to flinch in fright. "Okay calm down and tell me what I need to know" "I told my parents that I have a fiance—" He trailed off but is interrupted by his friend's loud outburst of unending laughter. "I'm sorry continue" he apologized still trying to stifle his laughter. "What is your problem?" A now agitated Devon asks, suddenly feeling irritated at the incessant laughter coming from his friend. "You? A fiance? They don't even have to worry cause you'll pass out as a gay for sure." "Can you please just focus here. This is serious" Devon begs through gritted teeth and his friend raises both hands in surrender. "Thank you" he whispered gratefully "I told my parents that I have a girlfriend because apparently they were trying to shove me into relationships. My mum even successfully managed to set me up on three blind dates and it was hell so I decided to take matters into my own hands" "By lying to them that you have a girlfriend?" Stephen repeats, earning a nod from Devon. "So far it worked. I mean, I was able to get them off my back but then my brother is finally getting married and now they're coming over to meet his woman and also my supposed fiance. I don't know what to do. I have less than a month to come up with something otherwise I'm doomed Stephen" Devon groans out in frustration, and Stephen rubs his shoulders softly. "Well firstly, I'm glad that you're not gay. That's a relief." Devon turns to look at Stephen with a glare but he ignores and continues "And now we have to brainstorm and come up with something" He falls his head back to the couch "What's up with your parents anyways? You're the CEO of one of the best software companies in the entire country. Why would they put such a heavy burden on you and what's the issue with this inheritance? Is it that important?" "I don't even want to talk about it but please help me come up with a plan. I love my life and I don't want anyone ruining it especially my mom because she's hell bent on going from heaven down to hell until she fulfils her desire of giving me a woman." "This is tough" Stephen breathes out through his mouth before thinking for a while. He snaps his fingers as a random thought came into his mind. "I've got it" He squeaks happily "I've got a great idea and trust me, you're going to love this idea" Devon sits up expectantly "Please go on. The sooner I solve this problem, the better" "How about, we rent you a girlfriend?" he squeals In delight. "Excuse me" Devon looks on in confusion, not understanding a single thing his friend just said. "Okay. Here's what we'll do. We'll create an Ad online for a part time girlfriend. You'll state a list of qualities you'd like her to possess as your woman and a very attractive pay then, anyone that agrees to your terms and conditions will be Interviewed and if you like her then, you hire her. Simple" Stephen concludes and somehow Devon is on board with this plan. He doesn't mind doing anything as long as he doesn't have to deal with his parents drama and tantrums. "You're a Genius Stephen but how do we go about it?" "You're a tech genius Devon so I'm pretty sure that you can handle it. We'll do it together if that'll make you feel better" Stephen suggests and Devon jumps up to give him a hug. Damn! "Quit hugging me dude. It's weird" "I never had a doubt that you could help me. You're actually very smart" "What's that supposed to mean?" "Nothing" Devon replies with a chuckle as he weighs the idea in his mind. Stephen was right. He would look for someone suitable and hire for the month or two to pretend to be his bride and If all goes well then his parents will be happy and so will he too. He'll finally kill two birds with one stone and get them to leave his life forever then maybe make up an excuse that his supposed girlfriend had broken up with him. This day was suddenly looking promising for him after all.
