Chapter Six: Behind Closed Doors

689 Words
The Blackwood estate had never felt so quiet. Elena stood by the library window, the mysterious fountain pen still fresh in her mind. Whoever was threatening her wasn't just trying to scare her—they were sending a message. A knock interrupted her thoughts. "It's me," Ethan said from the other side of the door. She opened it cautiously. "My security team found something," he said. "The gift box was purchased using a fake name, but the surveillance footage captured a familiar face." He handed her a tablet. The grainy video showed a woman in oversized sunglasses leaving the courier office. Even with her face partially hidden, Elena recognized the crimson coat. "Vanessa." Ethan nodded. "She's involved somehow. We just don't know how deeply." Before they could discuss it further, Ethan's phone rang. His expression darkened as he listened. "What happened?" He ended the call and looked at Elena. "One of my warehouses caught fire early this morning." "A fire?" "The investigators think it was deliberate." Elena's heart sank. "They're escalating." Ethan met her gaze. "No. They're trying to separate us by attacking everything around us." Outside the estate, hidden among the trees, a photographer snapped another picture through a long-range lens. Within minutes, the image was sent to an unknown number with a single message: They're still together. Proceed to phase two. Elena and Ethan had no idea that the game against them had just become far more dangerous. The house was silent. Long after everyone had gone to bed, Ethan stood alone in his study, a half-empty glass of whiskey untouched on the desk before him. His gaze drifted to the old wooden box hidden on the top shelf of his bookcase. He hadn't opened it in years. With a slow breath, he reached for it. Dust coated the lid. His fingers trembled as he lifted it open. Inside were dozens of folded letters, each tied together with a faded blue ribbon. Every one of them was from Elena. Letters she'd written during the years they were together. Letters he'd never had the courage to throw away. He picked up the first one. The paper had yellowed with age. "Dear Ethan," it began. "One day, when your company becomes the biggest in the country, I'll be sitting in the front row at your speeches, cheering louder than anyone else. And when I become a famous author, you'll complain that strangers recognize me more than they recognize you." A weak laugh escaped him. She had predicted the future. Only... She had imagined they'd be standing side by side. Instead, they had become strangers. He closed his eyes, the memory of that rainy night returning with painful clarity. The night he told her she wasn't enough. Words he had replayed every day since. A knock sounded at the door. His head of security stepped inside. "Sir?" Ethan quickly folded the letter. "What is it?" "We've increased patrols around the estate." "Good." The guard hesitated. "There's something else." He handed Ethan a sealed envelope. "It was found at the front gate." Ethan frowned. "There was no one on the cameras?" "No, sir." He carefully opened the envelope. Inside was a single photograph. His blood ran cold. It was an old picture of him and Elena from years ago. They were laughing together at a small café, completely unaware that someone had been watching them. Across the photograph, written in thick black ink, were six chilling words. "Some love stories deserve tragic endings." Ethan's jaw clenched. Whoever was behind this wasn't simply threatening Elena. They knew details from a past that only a handful of people should have known. And that meant one thing. The enemy had been watching them for much longer than either of them had ever imagined. He carefully folded the photograph and looked toward the window, where the estate grounds disappeared into the darkness. "This ends now," he whispered. For the first time in years, Ethan wasn't fighting for his business, his reputation, or his family name. He was fighting for the woman he'd once lost. And this time... He had no intention of letting her go.
