The Choice That Destroyed Everything

888 Words
After Bob’s words, silence swallowed the hallway completely. Even the neighbors who had secretly opened their doors slowly disappeared back inside their apartments. Nobody wanted to witness the rest of the tragedy unfolding between mother, son, and wife. Bob stood motionless. His eyes no longer carried anger. That frightened Alicia more than anything else. Because anger meant he was still fighting. But this? This looked like surrender. “Bob…” Alicia whispered weakly. He raised one hand gently. Not in aggression. In exhaustion. “Please,” he said quietly. “I can’t hear anything else right now.” The pain inside his voice cut through her chest. Agnes watched him silently, but even she looked shaken by the emptiness in her son’s face. For the first time since everything began… The reality of what they had done became unavoidable. This wasn’t just forbidden love anymore. It was destruction. Family destruction. Bob looked at Agnes slowly. “You won.” Agnes frowned immediately. “This isn’t a competition.” Bob laughed softly. “Then why does it feel like my own mother stole my life?” The question hit harder than shouting ever could. Agnes opened her mouth slightly… Then closed it again. Because there was no answer. Not one that could justify any of this. Without another word, Bob walked back into the apartment. Alicia instinctively tried following him. But he stopped her immediately. “I need space.” The coldness in his tone terrified her. The apartment door closed softly behind him. Leaving Alicia alone in the hallway with Agnes. For several seconds, neither woman moved. Then Agnes stepped closer carefully. “He’s emotional right now.” Alicia turned toward her in disbelief. “Emotional?” Her voice cracked. “He’s broken!” Agnes’ expression tightened slightly. “I know.” “No, you don’t.” Alicia wiped tears angrily from her face. “You didn’t see his face just now.” Agnes reached for her hand gently. “Alicia” Alicia pulled away immediately. “No.” That single word stunned Agnes. Alicia stared at her with shaking breath. “This has gone too far.” Agnes’ chest tightened. “You love me.” “Yes,” Alicia admitted painfully. “But look what loving you has done.” Inside the apartment, Bob sat alone in darkness. He could still hear faint voices outside the door. But he didn’t care anymore. For the first time in years… He felt emotionally numb. He stared blankly at the wedding photo hanging near the television. Himself. Alicia. Smiling. Happy. Innocent. Before immigration problems. Before Canada. Before his mother touched his wife. Bob suddenly stood up and ripped the photo frame violently from the wall. Glass shattered across the floor instantly. And finally… After months of holding everything inside… He broke completely. He collapsed onto the couch crying harder than he ever had in his life. Not loud dramatic crying. The terrifying kind. The kind where pain becomes too deep for sound. Outside the apartment building, Alicia sat inside Agnes’ car trembling emotionally. Neither woman spoke for a long time. Rain tapped softly against the windshield. Finally Agnes whispered: “Come home with me.” Alicia looked at her slowly. “Home?” Agnes nodded carefully. “We can leave all this behind.” Alicia almost laughed through tears. “You think it’s that simple?” “We love each other.” “And he’s your son.” Agnes looked away instantly. The guilt inside her face answered enough. Alicia’s breathing became shaky. “How did we become these people?” Neither of them had an answer. Back upstairs, Bob’s phone suddenly vibrated beside him. An unknown number. He almost ignored it. But eventually answered weakly. “Hello?” “Good evening, sir. This is regarding your immigration file review.” Bob sat upright immediately. Fear rushed through his body. “Yes?” “We’ll need additional clarification regarding certain inconsistencies connected to previous sponsorship records.” His blood turned cold. “We’ve scheduled an interview next week.” Bob closed his eyes slowly. The nightmare was beginning. Meanwhile downstairs, Alicia’s phone vibrated too. A message from Bob. Just three words. Don’t come back. Her chest tightened painfully. She immediately called him. No answer. Again. No answer. Panic began rising inside her. “Bob won’t pick up.” Agnes looked concerned now too. “Maybe he needs time.” “No,” Alicia whispered fearfully. “Something’s wrong.” That same night, Bob left the apartment alone. No destination. No plan. Just pain. Rain soaked through his clothes as he walked endlessly through unfamiliar streets of Toronto. His mind replayed Alicia’s confession repeatedly. I do. Three words. Three words powerful enough to destroy an entire marriage. An entire family. Bob stopped near a roadside bridge staring down at dark water beneath him. Cars passed behind him. City lights reflected weakly across the rain-covered streets. And for one terrifying moment… Bob wondered if disappearing completely would hurt less than surviving this pain. Far away behind him, Alicia sat in Agnes’ car crying uncontrollably. Because for the first time… She realized she might lose Bob forever. And suddenly, the reality became horrifying: She loved Agnes. But she wasn’t ready to bury her husband either. And now… It might already be too late.
