Rain poured heavily across Toronto while Bob stood motionless near the bridge.
The freezing wind pushed against his soaked clothes, but he barely felt it anymore.
Inside him, everything already felt cold.
Dead.
He stared down at the dark water beneath the bridge as thoughts crashed violently through his mind.
His wife loved another person.
That person was his own mother.
His immigration status was now under investigation.
And somehow…
Despite all the betrayal…
He still loved Alicia enough to destroy himself emotionally.
Bob laughed softly to himself through tears.
“What kind of life is this?”
Meanwhile, Alicia kept calling him repeatedly from Agnes’ car.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
Fear was turning into panic now.
“This isn’t like him,” Alicia whispered shakily.
Agnes remained quiet beside her.
For the first time in a long while, even she looked genuinely worried.
“Maybe his phone died.”
“No.”
Alicia shook her head quickly.
“He always answers eventually.”
Her breathing became uneven.
“What if he does something to himself?”
Those words immediately changed the atmosphere inside the car.
Agnes turned toward her sharply.
“Bob wouldn’t”
“You didn’t see his eyes tonight.”
Silence.
Because they both had.
And neither woman could forget the emptiness inside them.
Back at the bridge, Bob finally pulled out his phone again.
More missed calls from Alicia.
He stared at her name for several seconds.
Then slowly switched the phone off completely.
He couldn’t listen to her voice right now.
Not after tonight.
Not after hearing her admit she loved Agnes.
Bob continued walking through the city for hours until he eventually entered a small late-night diner near downtown.
The waitress greeted him kindly, but he barely responded.
He sat alone near the window staring blankly outside while rain slid down the glass.
Around him, strangers laughed, ate, and continued their normal lives.
Meanwhile his own life felt completely ruined.
The waitress returned carefully.
“You okay, sir?”
Bob forced a weak nod.
“Just coffee.”
Several hours later, Alicia finally convinced Agnes to help search for him.
They drove through multiple streets calling his name whenever they saw pedestrians walking alone.
Hospitals.
Train stations.
Bus stops.
Nothing.
Every minute increased Alicia’s fear.
And guilt.
Because deep down…
She knew she helped push him to this emotional edge.
Around 3:00 AM, Bob’s phone finally turned back on briefly.
Almost instantly, dozens of missed notifications flooded the screen.
Calls from Alicia.
Calls from Agnes.
Messages.
Then one final text from Alicia caught his attention.
Please come home. I’m scared.
Bob stared at the message silently.
Home.
The word no longer felt real anymore.
Which home?
The marriage that betrayed him?
Or the mother who became his rival?
He suddenly realized something terrifying:
He no longer knew where he belonged.
As dawn slowly approached, Bob eventually returned to the apartment building.
Exhausted.
Emotionally hollow.
The moment Alicia saw him entering through the lobby doors, she ran toward him immediately.
“Oh my God!”
She threw her arms around him tightly.
Bob stood still.
No response.
No embrace.
Nothing.
Alicia pulled back crying.
“Where were you?”
Bob looked at her tiredly.
“Walking.”
“You scared me!”
A bitter smile crossed his face.
“Good.”
The word stunned her.
Bob stepped past her toward the elevator.
Alicia followed desperately.
“Bob, please.”
He finally turned toward her inside the elevator.
His eyes looked older somehow.
More broken.
“I heard you tonight.”
Alicia’s tears returned instantly.
“I know.”
“No,” Bob whispered.
“You don’t.”
The elevator doors closed.
Inside the apartment, Agnes stood near the kitchen waiting anxiously.
The moment Bob walked in, she exhaled with visible relief.
“Thank God.”
Bob stared at her coldly.
“You don’t get to worry about me now.”
Pain crossed Agnes’ face instantly.
“Bob…”
“You lost the right to call yourself my mother the day you touched my wife.”
The words hit brutally hard.
Agnes looked genuinely shaken.
But Bob wasn’t finished.
“You know what hurts the most?”
Silence.
“I used to admire you.”
His voice cracked slightly.
“You were my hero growing up.”
Agnes lowered her eyes slowly.
“And now when I look at you…”
He shook his head painfully.
“…all I see is betrayal.”
For the first time since everything began, Agnes’ composure finally cracked.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I never wanted to hurt you.”
“But you did.”
“I didn’t plan this.”
“You still continued.”
Silence.
The truth trapped everyone in the room again.
Then suddenly, Bob pulled the immigration review letter from his pocket and placed it on the table.
“We have interviews next week.”
Fear crossed both women’s faces immediately.
Bob looked between them carefully.
“If immigration discovers the marriage was fake…”
He paused.
“…all of us could lose everything.”
The reality hit differently now.
This was no longer just emotional chaos.
Their futures were truly at risk.
Alicia sat down slowly, overwhelmed.
“What do we do?”
Bob answered without hesitation.
“We tell the truth.”
Both women looked up immediately.
Agnes frowned.
“That would destroy us.”
Bob laughed weakly.
“We already destroyed ourselves.”
The apartment became silent again.
Then Bob added quietly:
“I’m tired of living inside lies.”
But deep inside himself…
Bob already feared something else.
Because if the truth came out completely…
He might lose Alicia forever.
Not to deportation.
Not to prison.
But emotionally.
To Agnes.
And that possibility terrified him more than anything else.
