The secret meeting haunted Alicia long after she returned home.
As she drove back through the wet streets of Toronto, Agnes’ words echoed endlessly inside her mind.
If he takes you away from me completely…
There had been no need to finish the sentence.
Alicia already understood.
Agnes was willing to destroy everything.
Immigration records.
Their future.
Even her own son.
And somehow, that realization frightened Alicia more than the affair itself.
When Alicia entered the apartment, Bob was sitting quietly on the couch with the television on mute.
He looked up immediately.
“Where were you?”
Alicia hesitated.
Wrong move.
Bob noticed instantly.
His expression hardened.
“You went to see her.”
Not a question.
A statement.
Alicia sighed tiredly.
“We needed to talk.”
Bob laughed softly without humor.
“Of course you did.”
“She threatened us, Bob.”
“And you thought the solution was visiting her secretly?”
“I was trying to calm her down!”
Bob stood up suddenly.
“You keep acting like she’s your partner!”
The accusation hit hard because part of it was true.
Alicia’s frustration exploded.
“You think this is easy for me?”
“No,” Bob replied sharply. “I think you enjoy having both of us emotionally trapped around you.”
The words stunned her.
“What?”
Bob shook his head bitterly.
“You tell me you love me.”
Pain filled his eyes.
“But every time she calls, you run back to her.”
Alicia looked away immediately.
And that silence wounded him again.
“I left everything behind for you,” Bob whispered.
The anger inside him was fading now, replaced by exhaustion.
“My country. My pride. My peace.”
Alicia’s eyes became emotional.
“I know.”
“But no matter what I do…”
Bob looked directly at her.
“…I still feel like I’m sharing my wife with my own mother.”
The sentence broke her completely.
Alicia burst into tears instantly.
“I never wanted this!”
“But you stayed in it.”
She covered her face crying.
“I didn’t know how to stop.”
Bob’s voice softened slightly.
“Then stop now.”
Simple words.
Impossible request.
Because the truth was horrifyingly complicated:
Alicia loved Bob.
But she loved Agnes too.
And choosing one felt like emotionally killing the other.
That night, neither of them slept.
Bob lay awake staring at the ceiling while Alicia quietly cried beside him thinking he couldn’t hear her.
But he heard everything.
Every shaky breath.
Every muffled sob.
And somehow that hurt even more.
Because despite all the betrayal…
He still wanted to comfort her.
The following morning, Bob finally got a job offer from a logistics company several hours away in another province.
The salary wasn’t amazing.
The apartment there would be small.
But it was enough for a fresh start.
Farther away from Agnes.
Farther away from temptation.
When Bob told Alicia the news, excitement and fear appeared in her face at the same time.
“We’d have to move next month,” he explained.
Alicia forced a small smile.
“That’s good.”
But Bob noticed immediately.
“You don’t want to go.”
“That’s not true.”
“You hesitated.”
Alicia rubbed her arms nervously.
“It’s just… sudden.”
Bob stared at her quietly.
“No,” he said softly.
“It’s just farther from her.”
Silence.
Again.
Always silence whenever Agnes entered the conversation.
That evening, Alicia called Agnes.
The moment Agnes heard about the planned move, her voice changed instantly.
“You’re leaving Toronto?”
“It’s for Bob’s job.”
Agnes became quiet for several seconds.
Then:
“You’re really choosing him.”
Alicia closed her eyes painfully.
“It’s not that simple.”
“It feels simple to me.”
“Agnes”
“No.”
Her voice carried deep hurt now.
“You said you loved me.”
“I do.”
“Then why are you running away?”
Alicia’s chest tightened.
“Because this situation is destroying everybody.”
Agnes laughed bitterly.
“No. He’s destroying us.”
Alicia pulled the phone away briefly, overwhelmed.
“This isn’t healthy anymore.”
“What we had was real.”
“It still is.”
The confession slipped out before Alicia could stop herself.
Silence followed immediately.
Then Agnes whispered softly:
“Then stay.”
Alicia’s eyes filled with tears.
“You’re asking me to abandon my husband.”
“And you’re asking me to survive losing you.”
Across the apartment, Bob watched Alicia from the kitchen doorway quietly.
He couldn’t hear every word this time.
But he didn’t need to.
The expression on Alicia’s face said enough.
Love.
Conflict.
Attachment.
And Bob realized something painful in that moment:
This was no longer just an affair.
Alicia had emotionally bonded with Agnes deeply.
Maybe permanently.
Days later, tension reached another level when Bob unexpectedly received a letter requesting additional review of certain immigration documents connected to Alicia’s previous marriage history.
His blood ran cold instantly.
Nothing directly accused them yet.
But the timing felt terrifying.
Bob rushed home immediately.
The moment Alicia saw the letter, fear covered her face.
“You think she already reported us?”
“I don’t know!”
Bob paced the apartment anxiously.
“This can destroy everything.”
Alicia grabbed her phone instantly.
“I’ll call her.”
Bob stared at her in disbelief.
“Of course you will.”
The bitterness inside his voice hurt her deeply.
But he wasn’t wrong.
Even now…
Agnes was still the first person Alicia emotionally ran toward.
Late that night, Agnes sat alone in her apartment staring at an old photograph of herself and Alicia smiling together during their fake honeymoon trip.
Her thumb brushed softly across Alicia’s face.
Then her phone vibrated.
A message from Alicia: Did you report us?
Agnes stared at the message for a long moment.
Then slowly typed:
Not yet.
Alicia’s heart nearly stopped when she read it.
Because that single word meant everything.
Not yet.
Which meant Agnes still could.
Anytime.
