The interview room felt colder than the weather outside.
Bright white lights hung above a long gray table where three immigration officers sat quietly reviewing documents.
The sound of papers turning echoed heavily across the room.
Bob, Alicia, and Agnes sat side by side.
Yet emotionally, they felt miles apart.
One of the officers adjusted his glasses and looked directly at Agnes first.
“Ms. Agnes Okafor, can you explain how your relationship with Ms. Alicia Raymond began?”
Agnes answered calmly.
“She was my son’s wife. She came to Canada alone while he remained in Nigeria.”
The officer nodded slightly while writing notes.
“And your marriage?”
Agnes paused briefly.
“It began as an immigration arrangement.”
The room instantly became heavier.
Alicia’s breathing stopped for a second.
Bob closed his eyes slowly.
The truth had begun.
The officer looked up sharply.
“So you admit the marriage was fraudulent?”
Agnes remained composed.
“At first, yes.”
Silence.
Then the officer asked the question none of them were emotionally prepared for.
“At first?”
Agnes swallowed slowly.
Then answered honestly:
“The feelings later became real.”
Bob stared forward silently.
Alicia’s chest tightened painfully.
Even here.
Even now.
Agnes still chose truth about loving her.
The officers exchanged glances immediately.
One of them turned toward Alicia.
“Ms. Raymond… did you also develop a romantic relationship with Ms. Okafor?”
Alicia froze completely.
Her mind screamed at her to deny everything.
To protect themselves.
To survive.
But then she remembered Bob’s words.
No more lies.
Tears filled her eyes slowly.
“Yes.”
Bob lowered his head quietly.
The officers continued writing.
“How long did the romantic relationship continue?”
Alicia’s voice shook badly.
“Months.”
“While legally married to her son?”
“…Yes.”
The silence inside the room became unbearable.
Bob felt humiliation burn through his chest like fire.
Hearing it spoken aloud hurt differently.
More real.
More permanent.
Finally, one officer looked toward Bob.
“Mr. Okafor… were you aware of the relationship?”
Bob laughed softly to himself.
A broken laugh.
“Not at first.”
“And when did you discover it?”
“When my mother confessed she was in love with my wife.”
Even the immigration officers briefly paused at that sentence.
Because the tragedy of it sounded unbelievable even to strangers.
The interview continued for nearly two hours.
Questions.
Documents.
Timelines.
Every lie slowly stripped away piece by piece.
By the end, emotional exhaustion filled the entire room.
Finally, the lead officer closed the file slowly.
“At this stage, your case will undergo further investigation.”
Fear immediately crossed Alicia’s face.
The officer continued:
“We are not making a final decision today.”
Small relief.
Very small.
“But due to admitted immigration fraud, all involved parties remain under review.”
Bob nodded slowly.
He expected that.
Then came the final warning.
“You are not to leave the province without notification until the investigation concludes.”
The words landed heavily.
Their freedom now felt fragile too.
Outside the building, nobody spoke immediately.
Cold wind moved through downtown Toronto while people walked past them unaware of the emotional wreckage standing on the sidewalk.
Finally, Agnes whispered:
“At least they didn’t arrest us.”
Bob looked at her sharply.
“That’s your comfort?”
Agnes looked away.
Alicia suddenly felt sick.
Everything now felt real.
No more hiding behind emotions or secret relationships.
Consequences had arrived.
As they walked toward the parking garage, reporters suddenly appeared near the entrance doors.
Apparently somebody inside the immigration office had leaked information about the unusual case.
Cameras immediately turned toward them.
“Ms. Okafor! Is it true you married your son’s wife?”
“Did immigration fraud lead to a romantic affair?”
“Mr. Okafor, how does it feel losing your wife to your mother?”
Flashlights exploded around them.
Alicia panicked instantly.
Bob grabbed her hand protectively while Agnes shouted angrily at reporters to move away.
But the damage was done.
People were staring.
Recording.
Whispering.
Their private nightmare had become public humiliation.
Back inside the car, Alicia broke down completely.
“Oh my God…”
She covered her face sobbing uncontrollably.
Bob sat silently beside her staring out the window.
Meanwhile Agnes gripped the steering wheel tightly, rage burning across her face.
“This should never have leaked.”
But Bob barely listened.
Because another realization was slowly destroying him inside:
No matter what happened legally now…
Their lives would never return to normal.
Never.
That evening, social media across parts of Canada and Nigerian communities online exploded with gossip about the scandal.
Headlines spread rapidly:
“Canadian Woman Accused of Affair with Son’s Wife During Immigration
Marriage.”
“Nigerian Family
Caught in Shocking Immigration Love Triangle. “Mother Allegedly Steals Son’s Wife.”
Bob stopped reading after the third article.
He threw his phone across the room violently.
Alicia sat nearby crying silently.
Agnes remained unusually quiet.
For the first time since everything began…
Even she looked afraid.
Not of immigration.
Not of prison.
But of what the world now thought of them.
Late that night, Bob quietly packed a small bag.
Alicia noticed immediately.
Her heart dropped.
“What are you doing?”
Bob zipped the bag slowly.
“I need time away from both of you.”
Fear filled her face.
“Bob, please don’t leave.”
He looked at her with exhausted eyes.
“I can’t breathe inside this situation anymore.”
Alicia grabbed his arm desperately.
“I still love you.”
Bob’s face twisted painfully.
“That’s the problem.”
Silence.
Then softly…
Almost heartbreakingly softly…
He asked:
“But do you love me enough to let her go forever?”
Alicia opened her mouth.
No answer came.
And once again…
That silence became his final wound.
Bob nodded slowly.
Then walked toward the apartment door.
This time…
He didn’t look back.
