Chapter 1: The Unexpected

448 Words
Ethan Thompson stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows of his father's office, staring out at the breathtaking view of the London skyline. He had always loved this view, but today it felt suffocating. Behind him, his father, James Thompson, was speaking, his voice low and gravelly. "Ethan, I know this may come as a shock to you, but I've decided to retire as CEO of Thompson Industries, effective immediately." Ethan turned to face his father, his mind reeling. "What? Why?" His father shrugged. "I'm getting old, Ethan. I've been doing this for over 40 years. It's time for me to step aside and let someone else take the reins." Ethan felt a surge of panic. He had always known that he would have to take over the company eventually, but he had never expected it to be so soon. "And who exactly do you propose takes over as CEO?" Ethan asked, trying to keep his tone neutral. His father smiled, a sly glint in his eye. "Why, you, of course, Ethan. You're the only logical choice." Ethan's heart sank. He had always felt like an outsider in his family's business, and the thought of taking over as CEO was daunting. "But Father, I don't know if I'm ready for this," Ethan protested. His father's expression turned stern. "Nonsense, Ethan. You're a Thompson. You have a duty to this company and to our family's legacy. You'll do fine." Ethan felt a surge of resentment. He had always felt like he was living in the shadow of his family's expectations, and now he was being forced into a role that he didn't want. As he stood there, feeling trapped and suffocated, Ethan's gaze drifted to the reception area outside his father's office. That's when he saw her - a beautiful young woman with piercing green eyes and long, curly brown hair. She was sitting at the reception desk, typing away on her computer. Ethan felt a sudden jolt of attraction. Who was this mysterious woman, and why did he feel drawn to her? As if sensing his gaze, the woman looked up and caught his eye. Ethan felt a flush rise to his cheeks as she smiled and looked away. "Ah, Ethan, I see you've met our new receptionist," his father said, following his gaze. "Emily Wilson. She's been with us for a few weeks now." Ethan's eyes snapped back to his father. "Yes, I've met her," he said, trying to sound nonchalant. But he couldn't shake the feeling that his life was about to change in ways he never could have imagined. Little did he know, Emily Wilson was about to become a whole lot more than just the receptionist.
