Chapter 6

959 Words
Nico Today is Everlyn's birthday and the day she discovers who she is as a wolf and could discover her mate. I am downright giddy at the prospect of being her mate and take extra care to look my best. I tame my wild curls and wear some of my nicest casual clothing in order to make a good impression. I plan to pick some flowers on the way to the school and accidentally run into her along my path. Only I run into my dad first. "Morning, son. Where are you off too?" I clear my throat, knowing he's sniffing around for some weakness of some kind. "No where, Dad. Just to the school per my routine before training." "Hmm, you're spending an awful lot of time at the school." He nudges me in an attempt to be playful. "Is there some she-wolf that's caught your eye? Perhaps I should go with you and see this prospect for your mate." "NO!" The word comes out harshly and unexpectedly. I quickly compose myself, reeling back in before correcting myself to my Dad's unmistakable disgruntled appearance. "I mean, you shouldn't worry yourself over such details. I can meet you at the training field." "Nonsense. You've never taken a shine to a female. It's high time I meet her." Undeterred by my request, Dad ends up walking with me towards school. Cole sees him with me and keeps his distance. Everyone around us stays ten feet away as though warn off by his dominance. "Where's this female? Why aren't you swarmed?" "You're a little intimidating, Dad." I point out, motioning to the scared faces across the school yard. He shoves me again, playfully. "Your old man still has it, doesn't he?" Just then, I catch a whiff of something heavenly. It smells like a fresh bakery, complete with coffee and all the pastries. It smells exactly what heaven would be like if I had to attach a scent to it. And there, right in front of me, is Everlyn and Pen. "Mate." "Atta boy! Who is she? We should get your mother to meet her too. Who is the lucky gal?" My Dad's eyes search for the direction of my gaze and slumps when he finds it focused on Everlyn and Pen. "Pen isn't old enough, boy. You must be picking up the wrong scent. Try again." "She's our mate." My voice comes out gruffer than normal, my wolf coming close to the surface. Our Omega. At long last. "Hell no!" My Dad bounds forward towards Everlyn, our mate. I growl and snarl as he draws closer. His hand grasps her wrist, Everlyn letting out a little squeal in light of the interaction. He drags her towards me, eyes demanding an explanation and full of rage. "Is this your mate?!" The words came out as a demand, not a question. From the corner of my eye, I see a crowd gathering. My mother, having heard the rumors, hustled down here and is bearing witness to this monstrosity. Her hand is covering her mouth, terrified of the outcome to be. Cole is nearby, shaking his head, shocked at the discovery and disappointed. An Omega for a mate. What kind of Prime Alpha will I be? "Reject her!" The crowd stills, a gasp rising from all those around us. To reject someone is to condemn yourself to a world of loneliness and solitude. It is never taken lightly and only used in rare situations. To openly reject a mate because of their background is unheard of and frowned upon. "Reject her, right now son." My Dad's words rattle through my brain, the forbidden nature of loving her appealing to me even more. He steps closer to me. "Look, you can have all the females you want. Choose another mate. Take another to bed. But reject this Omega. She is nothing but trouble." The words reverberate in my mind as I contemplate what he's saying. My wolf whines at my serious consideration of rejecting the perfect one for us. But is she? How can she be perfect if she is the daughter of a traitor? I step closer to her, my mother softly gasps. I look over my shoulder, finding her on her knees before me. "Don't do it, Nico. We taught you better." "You taught him to be soft. This is how leaders are made: in the hellfire. Reject her!" The bark barely penetrates my psyche, the command have a slight effect but not as much as other wolves. My wolf is growing stronger. But not strong enough yet to resist. I step closer to Everlyn, tears already clouding her eyes but her back straight and her chin held high. "Do it, Nico. I dare you." "I'm sorry, Everlyn. This is not what I want for us." I raise my hand over my heart, bracing myself. "I, Nico Carter, reject you, Everlyn Cumming, as my mate and Omega female." The pain that shoots through me is staggering, causing me to tumble backwards. But still a thread remains. Her side of the rejection. Yet Everlyn walks over to me, stands straighter and merely huffs. "I will not reject you. You will rue the day you thought it wise to reject me though." Without another word and our bond still in place, Everlyn turns and walks away with a huff. The crowd around us softly begins to weep for the bond, distress and distrust flooding the pack bond. What kind of Prime Alpha rejects his son's mate? Questions flood the mind of the people, all seeking resolution and understanding. As for me, I sat quietly on my knees, watching my Queen walk away with my heart in hand and wondering what will become of us.
