Nico
A few hours prior
My dad bursts into the room, enraged, with my mom following quickly behind him. "You cannot punish pack members like that, Leo! It besmirches our standing as the Prime Alpha family."
"That girl," he spits the term, "besmirches our standing as a pack. I should've put them both to death alongside her dear old father. Then I'd be done with it."
"The Head Omega should've handled it, you know that."
"The Head Omega? Marla dotes on Everlyn like she's another daughter to her. She doesn't punish her like she deserves."
I look over my plate to where my parents are in a standoff. So this is about Everlyn, the Omega whose dad was put to death for treason, whose mother is suffering from mating sickness, and who haunts my every thought and dream. Her pale skin seems to glow at every point of the day, but especially in the moonlight. Her blue eyes captivate me and her curves beg for attention. My c**k perks up at the prospect of sinking into her soft body, my wolf prowling at the edge of my mind. My hands partially shift as I begin to think of the pretty little Omega.
My dad seems to notice, laughing and clasping my back in a celebratory manner. "So son, who's the girl who has your wolf on edge?"
Confusion floods my face. "Excuse me, sir?"
He points to my partial shift and wriggles his eyebrows towards me. "She must be some chick. Tell me, how much tail are you getting anyways."
"Leo! That's hardly an appropriate conversation for our son. He needs to save himself for his mate."
My mom steps out of earshot when my dad leans closer to me, his breath hot against my ear. "Don't listen to her. Sow your oats while you can. Maybe after too. I still find an Omega or two who likes to warm my hunting bed."
Bile builds in the back of my throat, vomit threatening to abort my food. "Oh?"
Dad nudges me like we are best pals, sharing stories of conquests as my mom sweeps back into the room. "Best get ready for the day. You have to shadow your father again and I'm sure you have appointments outside of that."
Wiping my face, I pick up my wallet and tuck it into my pants. "Now that you mention it, there is something I need to do by the high school."
"Nico." Mom chides while my Dad winks and humps the air like he's in on some secret.
"What, Mom? Just something I need to do before I go to training."
I dart out the door, making my way towards the school and not waiting for their continued argument. The air is crisp against my skin and my wolf howls in anticipation, fur rippling beneath my skin, the shift begging to over take my form. "Calm down there. We'll get to shift during training."
I want to see her, my wolf, Nic, pines in response.
And I want to see her too. Everlyn. "I know. Someday soon we can be honest."
The truth is, I am pretty sure Everlyn is my mate. But what that means for my place in the pack, my dad, everything, is still unknown. Then my friends would tease her mercilessly.
Speaking of friends, Cole runs alongside me. "Morning Alpha."
"Cole, I'm not Alpha yet."
"Ah, yet being the operative word."
We walk in relative silence, the crunch of leaves underneath our steps as we make our way towards the school. "Why do you come here every morning, Alpha?"
I ignore the use of the honorific, Cole's intention unflappable. I truly come here every morning to see Everlyn. But I can't tell him that. This pining is just that and maybe, once she's 18, I'll f**k her out of my system. "No reason. Just checking out the future recruits."
"Gotcha, Alpha. We need to make sure they're ready for us."
"Alpha!" We are quickly surrounded by eager teenagers, desperate for my praise, affection, attention. Girls place their hands on my body, desperate. I shoot them a cocky smirk, resulting in tittering and swooning. The boys all crowd me for information about training and preparing for the big leagues. This is what I love about this group. I am the big dog, not a pitiful puppy waiting for my dad's blessing.
Soon, I see the target of my affection. "Hello ladies!"
Everlyn and Pen both look up from their conversation, a scowl creeping across Everlyn's face. They quickly shift to divert direction but I follow rapidly, snaking an arm around Everlyn's supple waist. "Where are you going, Everlyn? Don't forget we have an agreement."
Still scowling, she pulls out the pastries from her coat. "Here, Nico. I didn't forget." Warm pastries are shoved into my waiting hands as she pushes away from me, eager to put distance between us.
"Pleasure doing business as always!" I watch the pair walk off, Cole at my arm, hands fumbling to get pastries for himself. I shove him backwards, stuffing the golden goodies into my waiting mouth. "Get your own, dickwad. Now let's get our asses over to training."
We make our way over to the field, where the able bodies adults are gathering for their morning workout. My dad stands front and center, his eyes down turning when he sees me stuffing food into my mouth. "Pastries aren't the way to an Alpha's physique."
"I'll remember that, Dad. Now can we get this show on the road?"
We move into training mode, working diligently together until it's time to shift and run in our wolf forms. The shif tovertakes me easily, no effort required, as the brown fur ripples over my skin and my hands transform to paws. I find myself sitting further back in my mind as my wolf takes the driver's seat. I want to see her. He poises himself to pounce, darting off in the direction of the school, when I reel forward to take hold of the proverbial reins.
"No can do. First, the school is a no wolf zone. Remember there's a few humans who go to school there too." My wolf huffs at me but I feel the tension ease slightly in our muscles. "Plus, don't you want to get strong and prove what a good mate we are to have?"
Mate! I can't wait until she knows. He confirms my belief: Everlyn is my mate, though unerage and not able to detect me yet.
If only I could accept her for all that she is and not for what my dad thinks of her.
