The Moon Between Us

487 Words
The night was colder than usual. The full moon was just a day away, casting a silvery glow over the trees, touching everything with a quiet magic. Aria sat by the lake, the pendant she’d found in her mother’s chest clutched in her hand. Its soft moonlight pulsed faintly in sync with her heartbeat. She heard footsteps behind her. She didn’t have to look to know it was Kael. “Couldn’t sleep either?” he asked, settling beside her. “It’s like my bones know something’s coming,” she murmured. “Like my whole body’s holding its breath.” He nodded slowly. “That’s the wolf in you. It feels the pull of the moon. And… something else.” She turned to look at him. “Something else?” He hesitated. His jaw tightened as if he were fighting an invisible war inside himself. Then—he looked at her, really looked at her, and said the words he had buried for too long. “Aria… I’ve tried to stay away. I’ve tried to be your guide, your protector… but the truth is, I feel something for you I don’t know how to shut off.” Her breath caught. “From the moment I saw you in that clearing, something in me… clicked. Not just the Alpha bond. Something deeper.” She looked away. “I feel it too, Kael. But… I’m still figuring out who I even am. What this wolf thing means. What we mean.” He reached for her hand. His touch was warm, steady. “I’m not asking you to choose anything now,” he said gently. “I just needed you to know. Because if anything happens during the shift tomorrow—if you forget who you are—remember this: I chose you. Not because the moon said so, but because I saw you. All of you.” Her eyes filled with tears—not from fear, but from something overwhelming and unfamiliar. “Why me?” she whispered. “I’m not strong. I’m not ready. You’re the Alpha—you could have anyone.” He gave a soft, almost broken smile. “That’s the thing, Aria. I don’t want anyone. I want you—even if it’s messy, even if it’s dangerous.” The wind stilled around them. And then—he kissed her. It wasn’t rushed or possessive. It was slow. Deep. Full of questions, and full of answers. Her wolf stirred within her, not in protest—but in recognition. The bond between them glowed as bright as the moon overhead. Elsewhere… Selene watched from the shadows, her face pale with fury. “So it’s true,” she whispered. “He’s chosen her.” She turned and disappeared into the trees, her plans shifting like smoke. “Let’s see how strong your love is, Kael,” she murmured. “When the wolf inside her tears everything apart.”
