It had been a couple weeks and Lena already found a job at Burger King with flexible hours that works around her class schedule. As it was close to her house she walked to work most days. Doug had gotten a job as well and although they lived in the same house they didn’t see each other very often. Of course when they both were home they were bogged down with papers and other assignments to complete. It was a couple weeks before they had any real free time and Doug had convinced Lena that what she needed to relax was a fun party at a local Frat.
Lena was wearing one of her favorite green and black dresses. It came down almost to her knees and the straps tied around her neck. The low back ment she wasn’t able to wear a bra but the straps were tight enough that the girls looked perfect. Being Lena she folded her green bandana up and tied it as a headband under her hair. When she stepped out of her room Doug was waiting to escort her to the party wearing a dark blue shirt and jeans.
Doug drove as Lena had never been to the frat before and after all he was there as a pledge for the party. The frat required all pledges to either bring a girl to the party or serve all the guests and do clean up. Lena only agreed to go because she wanted him to be able to enjoy himself. She wasn’t really excited but decided that it wasn’t the worst thing to do on a quiet night.
When they arrived the party had already started. There were a couple guys that Lena recognized from her classes but no one that she had actually spoken with. She spent a lot of time just standing by the bonfire outside. After a short while Doug showed up with two cups and handed one of them to her. “not having a good time?” he asked her slightly worried.
“It’s fine Doug. I just don’t know anyone I guess that’s what happens when all you do is work and do class work.” She laughed as she took a drink. “damn this is some good hunch punch.” She lets Doug lead her inside and introduce her to a couple of the frat boys. She starts to have a good time laughing and dancing. One of the guys handed her a new cup of punch. She drinks some before starting to feel what she assumes is the effects of the alcohol in the punch. She decides to head out and walk home. Quickly she texts Doug to let him know she’s headed home before walking out of the frat house.
Halfway home she begins to notice that the road is becoming a bit wavy and worries that maybe it wasn’t the alcohol that was effecting her. She leans against a tree on the side of the road praying it will allow her head to clear a bit but starts to feel her eyes get heavy. It was then that a man driving past notices her on the side of the road and pulls over. He walks up to her, “hey there are you alright?” he asks in a southern accent. She tries to shake her head no but starts to feel woozy and almost falls over. Only the stranger catching her keeps her upright. “Hey now something ain’t right let me help you get home. Can you tell me how to get to your place?” by the time he helped her into his pickup however she has passed out. Worried about this poor girl he found on the side of the road he drives to his hotel room and helps her inside and into his bed.
The next morning Lena wakes up laying in a strange bed in a strange room. Her head hurting worse than ever before. “where the bloody hell am I?” she asks sitting up in the bed but feeling a bit woozy as she moves. “hello?” she shouts into the room.
A man walks out of the bathroom with a smile on his face wearing nothing but a hotel towel around his waist. “Hey there. Glad to see your alright this morning. You had worried last night. What do you remember?” he looks at her concerned.
“Im sorry but who the hell are you and where am I?” she looks around the unknown hotel room and back to the sexy guy sitting next to her. He was pretty good looking. She could get lost in his amazing green eyes.
He laughed “sorry I guess I forgot to introduce myself when you were passing out on the side of the road last night. I’m George and well I didn’t know where to take you so this is my home for the next month. I’m a traveling wielder and staying here in Gary at this hotel.” He gave her a goofy smile. “I just couldn’t leave you half conscious on the side of the road. I promise I didn’t do anything but pick you up and carry you to the bed”
She blushed. “I only had two cups of punch at the party. I don’t know what happened. The alcohol must have affected me worst then I thought. I’m sorry if I inconvenienced you.” She was so embarrassed. He laughed and went to his fridge and handed her a water. “um so where is my phone?” She asked looking around. He grabbed the phone off the counter and handed it to her.
“someone called Dougie keeps calling and texting but seeing as I didn’t know your name or if you were alright I didn’t want to answer and him think I kidnapped you.” He said softly. He was right there were 20 missed calls and a few dozen texts.
Hey bro I’m fine. I will be home in an hour or two I drank too much last night or something and kind of passed out.
She sent him a quick text before turning her attention to George. “Im Alena.” She said sticking her hand out and shaking his. “I can’t thank you enough for coming to my rescue. I’d probably be on the side of the road if it wasn’t for you. Anyways I hate to ask but can you buy any chance give me a ride home? I’m not quite sure where I am.” She looked at him sheepishly.
“Well Alena it’s a pleasure to be actually talking to you this time.” Great he’s a smart ass she couldn’t help but think as he spoke to her. “give me a few minutes and I’ll get ready and help you find your way home. But will you at least have breakfast with me first? And are you sure you don’t want to go to the hospital or something first? Last night it seemed like you were drugged not drunk.” She shakes her head no. “fine home it is.” He stands up and gets some clothes and heads back to the bathroom emerging a few minutes later fully dressed to see Lena on her phone.
“I promise you I’m fine. I must have drank more than I thought last night.” She paused “ no I only drank what you gave me. And that other pledge filled my cup one other time but that’s it.” She sighs “hes gonna give me a ride back it’s fine.” “yeah I know I just met him but he could have left me on the side of the road.” “fine I’ll look.” She looks over at the phone on the bedside table. “yeah I’ll wait for you here it’s the Comfort Inn in Hobart.” She sighs “See you soon.” She hangs up and sees George leaning against the bathroom door in shorts and a wife beater. “Sorry my brother thinks you could be a serial killer and wants to pick me up.” She blushes.
“well I’m sorry to disappoint but if I was a serial killer I’m not sure you would be able to see your phone, the hotel name or be free right now” he jokes with her “and if I was and I gave you your phone id say I was failing at my profession wouldn’t you?” he laughed and sat down. “So Dougie is your brother?”
She laughed at his comment “sort of” she admitted “we met when we were two and grew up together. His folks helped raise me and now that we’re at the same college we share a house.” She stopped realizing she was rambling. “so I’m guessing you travel a lot huh?” her smile was contagious and he caught himself smiling back at her.
“yep I travel everywhere.” He said not wanting to admit to this girl that he was relieved that she wasn’t dating this Dougie even though he seemed a bit over protective.
She got up and looked in the mirror trying to run her fingers though her hair to fix it some. Though it didn’t help so she unrolled her bandana and tied it up so her hair was somewhat hidden and at least not going anywhere. She did notice however when George slipped a .45 into the waist band of his shorts. Though she wasn’t about to say anything to him after all she had no idea why he would need one. He turned and looked at her a small smile still playing on his lips. “Do you always wear that bandana?” he asked her looking into her eyes.
“I wear my black or white one more often but this was a gift from a friend a few years ago.” She smiled remembering the friend she met in little Mexico a few years back. “he saw me wearing a red bandana and swapped it for this one. Said it brought out my eyes better or something like that.”
He laughed “Yeah can’t imagine a red bandana looking all too good on you. That one looks pretty darn good though.” Right then her phone went of notifying her of a text.
Doug:
I’m here. What room are you in?
Lena:
I’ll meet you in the lobby give me a sec.
Doug:
Fine then come here so we can get home and I can make sure your ok.
Lena laughed at the message. “Hey I need to head to the lobby my ride is here.” She said as she looked up at George. “But before I go can I get your number?” she asked shyly. He nodded and entered his number in her phone. Before holding the door open for her.
“Here let me escort you to the lobby.” He smiled at her as she walked past him. They walked in a comfortable silence to the lobby at the end of the hall. Doug ran up to her as soon as she entered and gave her a big hug before smacking her arm causing George to stiffen.
“where the hell do you get off giving me a heart attack like that? You said you were walking home and then I get there this morning and your just gone, you don’t answer your damn phone, and then when you do your with some rando in a hotel 20 minutes away!” he screams at her. She looks down unable to defend herself knowing he was right.
“Man let’s stop making a scene and if you want we can go to my room and talk.” George says looking protectively at the girl standing in-between both guys. “im the one who brought her here after all.” Doug just nodded and followed them back to the room. Once the door was closed George started to explain how he was headed back from a double shift and found Lena on the side of the road the night before. “She was out of it and passed out the second I got her into my truck. I brought her here to sleep and honestly it seemed like she was drugged or something so being a gentleman I just wanted this innocent girl somewhere safe. I was going to bring her back home when she woke. I guess I should have answered her phone when you called but seriously would you have felt better with a random guy telling you she was passed out and wouldn’t wake up yet?”
Doug sighed. “no I would have called the cops. Hell I thought about doing it anyways until Lena told me not to. How would she have gotten drugged? I made her drink last night.” He stared at her looking for an answer.
“I thought you were working the bar so when one of the other pledges gave me a refill I assumed it was from you.” She said sheepishly.
“YOU TOOK A DRINK FROM A STRANGER” They both yelled at her. She looked at the ground and started ringing her hands.
“I thought you made it” she said so softly George could barely hear her. He did however notice the tears in her eyes. Doug noticed as well and got on his knees in front of her.
“Look sweetie I know you were gone for a year and nothing bad could happen at that school but your not there anymore. This is the real world and a cutie like you could get hurt especially when you take something from someone you don’t know or a ride from a stranger. Next time I’ll take you home and head back. You scared me is all.” Doug said making George wonder if this really was her brother or if she lied and this was her boyfriend. They acted weirdly close and didn’t really look anything like each other.
“He has a point you know.” George said as he made his way to the bed. “I mean what if I really was a killer or something.” Lena turned to look at him and laughed. Her laughter sounded as sweet as honey to him. “im serious darlin. Look just be careful next time. Ok?” she nodded.
“Sorry I worried you Doug. And thank you George for saving me. I’m sorry for being such a problem.” She looked like she had been chastised by a parent. It was slightly strange and George wondered what doug had ment about the school and her having been gone. After all the girl was wearing a flag so did that mean she did time for something? This girl was an enigma.
He was lost in thought about this girl whe. He felt someone tap his shoulder, “hey man did you see any bruises or anything on her last night? I mean she wasn’t hurt or anything was she? My mom is gonna kill me if she finds out I let Alena walk home from that party all alone.”
“Wait aren’t you her brother?” George was confused.
“Well I’m like a brother. She grew up next door and after highschool we kind of took her in cause her folks are d***s. They sent her off to some school last year and never let her visit home until they pulled her out as she was about to start college. Hell we had to have her graduation party and everything they didn’t even show. Plus she’s always been a wall flower so I guess bringing her to a frat party was kinda my bad last night.” He sighed. “I need to get her home and cleaned up. So unfortunately this is where I think we need to part ways.” He stood up and offered a hand to Alena who took it.
“Thank you for everything George.” She said and leaned over and kissed his cheek. “ I really do need to finish my paper and I have work tonight.” He smiled at her and said goodbye before watching them both leave.
